ddelib.dll is missing, and Windows may display “The application has failed to start because ddelib.dll was not found.” This file belongs to Autodesk software, not to Windows itself, so the reliable fix is normally to repair or reinstall the Autodesk application that owns it.
Which fix applies to you
Use this list to jump to the most relevant repair:
- AutoCAD or DWG TrueView stopped starting after an update, crash, or interrupted installation: repair the Autodesk installation first.
- The program was recently removed and installed again: reinstall the exact Autodesk product and release you were using.
- Your antivirus reports or quarantines
ddelib.dll: inspect quarantine, scan the computer, and restore only a verified file from the genuine Autodesk installation. - The error mentions “The specified module could not be found,” even though
ddelib.dllexists: a dependency may be missing. Reinstall Autodesk rather than copying additional DLLs. - You installed a 32-bit Autodesk application on 64-bit Windows: it still needs its 32-bit application files. Windows architecture does not make a 64-bit DLL interchangeable.
- Several Windows programs are failing or Windows itself behaves abnormally: run DISM and SFC as secondary integrity checks.
- Only one Windows account sees the error: test a new user profile before performing a full system reset.
- You are considering
regsvr32: do not use it for a normal missing Autodesk application DLL.
Do not download ddelib.dll from a random DLL repository and place it in System32, SysWOW64, or the Autodesk folder. The file can be the wrong architecture, the wrong product release, altered, or bundled with malware. It also leaves the damaged Autodesk installation untouched.

What is ddelib.dll
ddelib.dll is a Windows DLL used by an Autodesk application. Its embedded description and internal name are DDELIB.DLL, its product label is DDELIB, and its publisher is Autodesk, Inc.

That makes it an application component, not a Windows operating-system library. There is no reliable evidence that it ships with Windows, DirectX, .NET, or a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
The strongest public association is with:
- AutoCAD
- DWG TrueView
- Older AutoCAD installations and related Autodesk-based software
Not every AutoCAD or DWG TrueView release necessarily contains the same file. Autodesk applications can change their internal files between releases, and a DLL from one release should not be substituted for a file from another.
Normally, ddelib.dll belongs in the installation directory of the Autodesk product that calls it. A path resembling this is more meaningful than a copy in a Windows system folder:
C:Program FilesAutodesk<product folder>ddelib.dll
The exact folder depends on the Autodesk product, language, release, and installation type.
Errors associated with ddelib.dll
Windows may show one of these messages:
- “The application has failed to start because ddelib.dll was not found.”
- “This application failed to start because ddelib.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.”
- “A required component is missing: ddelib.dll. Please install the application again.”
- “Failed to load ddelib.dll.”
- “Error loading ddelib.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Cannot find
C:Program FilesAutodeskDWG TrueView 2019 - Englishddelib.dll.” - “The file ddelib.dll is missing or corrupt.”
- “Cannot register ddelib.dll.”
The wording does not always identify the real cause. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that ddelib.dll is present but one of the libraries it depends on is absent or damaged.
Fix 1: Repair the Autodesk installation
This is the best first fix because Autodesk’s repair process restores the application files in their expected locations and uses the correct product package.
AutoCAD 2021 and earlier
- Press the Windows key.
- Type Control Panel and open it.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Find AutoCAD in the installed-program list.
- Right-click it and select Uninstall/Change.
- Choose Repair.
- Follow the Autodesk repair wizard.
- Restart Windows when the process finishes.
- Launch AutoCAD again.
A successful repair should restore the missing file to the AutoCAD installation directory and allow the application to start normally.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf Repair fails:
- Return to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select AutoCAD.
- Choose Uninstall/Change.
- Select Reinstall instead of Repair.
- Complete the wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Test AutoCAD.
Repair attempts to restore missing or altered files. Reinstall replaces the installed product files from the original installation source.
AutoCAD 2022 and later
Newer Autodesk installers generally do not expose the older Repair and Reinstall choices. Use a full uninstall and reinstall instead:
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for the affected Autodesk product.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Select Uninstall.
- Complete the Autodesk uninstall process.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the same product and release through Autodesk Account or the official Autodesk product page.
- Install it normally.
- Launch the program and test the file again.
Back up custom settings, templates, plug-ins, and other project-related configuration before uninstalling. Also confirm that you can sign in and activate the Autodesk product again.
DWG TrueView
For DWG TrueView, use the official Autodesk viewer download source rather than a third-party DLL page. Autodesk’s current update guidance uses uninstalling the existing viewer and installing the updated product instead of applying a standalone update file.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
After reinstalling, open DWG TrueView from the Start menu. If it starts without the missing-file message and can open a test drawing, the repair worked.
Fix 2: Confirm that you installed the right architecture
There are public records for both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of ddelib.dll. These records are useful identification clues, but they are not universal replacement targets and do not prove that a particular release should be copied into your installation.
A 32-bit Autodesk application needs a 32-bit build of its application DLLs, even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit AutoCAD or DWG TrueView installation needs the matching 64-bit files.
Do not try to solve an architecture mismatch by installing both copies into Windows folders.

- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Look at System type.
To check the Autodesk application’s installed architecture, open its installation folder and review the product documentation or installer details. If you are uncertain, reinstall the same Autodesk product through its official installer. The installer selects and places the correct application files.
Architecture problems commonly happen when:
- An old 32-bit Autodesk application is copied to a newer computer.
- Files are taken from another AutoCAD release.
- A partial upgrade leaves old and new files mixed together.
- A user copies a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit application directory.
- A third-party installer replaces application files.
The correct fix is a matching Autodesk installation, not a manually selected DLL.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine safely
Security software can quarantine an Autodesk file after a detection, a false positive, or a damaged installation event. A missing file alone does not prove that malware was involved.
Check quarantine before restoring anything:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
ddelib.dllor the Autodesk installation folder. - Read the detection name and file path.
- If the file came from a genuine Autodesk installation, check its digital signature and confirm that the product was installed from Autodesk.
- Restore it only when you are confident it is legitimate.
- Restart the Autodesk application.
If you are not certain that the quarantined file is genuine, do not restore it. Uninstall and reinstall Autodesk from its official source instead.
If antivirus repeatedly removes the file:
- Run a full scan in Windows Security.
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Check whether the Autodesk installer completed without errors.
- Reinstall Autodesk.
- Review the security product’s detection details.
- Do not permanently disable antivirus protection just to make the program start.
A clean reinstall is safer than forcing an uncertain file back into the application folder.
Fix 4: Reinstall the Microsoft runtime only when the error identifies one
ddelib.dll is not known to be supplied by a Microsoft redistributable. Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is therefore not the primary repair for this file.
Use a runtime repair only when the error names a specific dependency, such as a missing Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, or when the Autodesk installer reports a prerequisite failure.
For Windows Features:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the listed Windows features.
- Enable a feature only when Autodesk documentation or the installer specifically requires it.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Do not randomly enable legacy components. Windows Features are not a general-purpose DLL repair menu.
If the Autodesk installer identifies a Microsoft prerequisite, obtain that prerequisite from Microsoft rather than from a DLL download site. Install the architecture required by the Autodesk product and restart before testing again.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and SFC repair Windows components. They do not normally recreate an Autodesk application DLL, so use them when other Windows programs also fail, Windows updates are damaged, or the Autodesk installation reports broader system corruption.
Run DISM first, then SFC:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then enter:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test AutoCAD or DWG TrueView.
Do not close the window while either scan is running. The process can appear to pause while Windows checks or repairs component files.

If DISM reports that it cannot find source files, install pending Windows updates and run the command again. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, restart and repeat the Windows repair process before assuming that ddelib.dll itself is fixed.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork of repeatedly running SFC and DISM by scanning for reported Windows problems; its free scan shows what it found, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the Autodesk program remains the definitive fix for an Autodesk-owned DLL.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall graphics and system drivers
A graphics driver is not the normal source of ddelib.dll, but AutoCAD and DWG TrueView depend heavily on graphics and system components. Driver problems can cause crashes, failed updates, or incomplete application installations.
Check drivers through Device Manager:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Repeat for any device showing a warning icon.
- Restart Windows.
For a clean graphics-driver repair:
- In Device Manager, expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Select the option to remove the driver package only if Windows presents it and you have a replacement driver ready.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current driver from the graphics hardware manufacturer.
- Restart again.
- Test the Autodesk application.
Do not uninstall a driver without knowing how you will reinstall it, especially on a computer that depends on a dedicated GPU.
Outbyte Driver Updater can make the manual process less tedious by showing which drivers it identifies as stale instead of making you hunt through hardware pages; its free scan identifies the reported issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional and does not replace reinstalling Autodesk when its application files are missing.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why regsvr32 usually does not fix this error
regsvr32 is not a universal missing-DLL repair command. It registers DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer, typically for COM or ActiveX components.
ddelib.dll is an Autodesk application library, and there is no evidence that it should be manually registered. Running this command:
regsvr32 ddelib.dll
may produce an error such as:
The module "ddelib.dll" was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.
That message does not prove the file is damaged. It usually means the DLL is not a self-registering COM server.
Use regsvr32 only when Autodesk documentation for your exact product explicitly instructs you to register a particular component. For a missing ddelib.dll, repair or reinstall Autodesk instead.
Check the application folder without copying files
You can inspect whether the file exists, but do not replace it manually.
- Right-click the AutoCAD or DWG TrueView shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Select Open file location.
- Look for
ddelib.dll. - If it is present, right-click it.
- Select Properties.
- Review the Digital Signatures tab if available.
- Check that the location is inside the expected Autodesk installation directory.
A file in System32 or SysWOW64 does not prove that it is the correct Autodesk file. Application search paths commonly prioritize the program’s own folder, and a system-folder copy can be ignored or create additional version conflicts.
If ddelib.dll exists but the program still reports that it cannot load it, repair or reinstall Autodesk. The message may indicate a missing dependency rather than a missing main file.
Fix 7: Test a new Windows user profile
Profile corruption can affect permissions, environment variables, application settings, and paths.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Create a test account:
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Accounts.
- Select Other users.
- Select Add account.
- Follow the prompts to create a local test account.
- Sign out of your current account.
- Sign in to the test account.
- Launch AutoCAD or DWG TrueView.
If the application works there, the Autodesk installation may be healthy and the original Windows profile may be damaged. Back up your files and Autodesk customizations before rebuilding or migrating the profile.
If the same ddelib.dll error appears in the new account, focus on repairing or reinstalling Autodesk.
Fix 8: Perform a clean Autodesk reinstall
Use this path when repair, antivirus checks, and a normal reinstall do not help.
Before starting:
- Back up drawings, templates, custom profiles, scripts, and plug-ins.
- Confirm your Autodesk sign-in or license details.
- Close Autodesk applications.
- Disconnect unnecessary external storage.
- Restart Windows.
Then:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall the affected Autodesk product.
- Uninstall only related Autodesk components that the official Autodesk procedure identifies as safe to remove.
- Restart Windows.
- Use Autodesk’s clean uninstall procedure for the affected product family.
- Restart again.
- Download the exact product from Autodesk Account or the official Autodesk product or viewer page.
- Run the installer as an administrator if required.
- Allow the installation to finish without interrupting it.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the product and open a test drawing.
Do not remove shared Autodesk components casually when another Autodesk product remains installed. A shared-component cleanup can create a second missing-file problem.
If the clean reinstall still fails, review the Autodesk installation logs and the exact error text. “Failed to load” points toward dependencies, permissions, or security software, while “not found” usually indicates that the product files were never installed, were removed, or were placed in the wrong product directory.
Prevention after the repair
Once the application starts:
- Keep AutoCAD or DWG TrueView updated through Autodesk’s official installer route.
- Do not mix files from different Autodesk releases.
- Do not copy application DLLs into
System32orSysWOW64. - Keep antivirus enabled and review quarantine events before restoring files.
- Avoid interrupting Autodesk installations or updates.
- Maintain backups of drawings and custom Autodesk settings.
- Leave adequate free storage for updates and temporary installer files.
- If a cleanup utility offers to remove shared Autodesk components, review what other Autodesk products still depend on first.
FAQ
Is ddelib.dll a Windows system file?
No reliable evidence identifies it as a Windows system component. It is an Autodesk application DLL associated publicly with AutoCAD and DWG TrueView installations.
Is ddelib.dll malware?
The filename alone cannot establish that. A genuine file should normally be inside the Autodesk product directory and should come from an authentic Autodesk installation. A file in an unexpected location deserves inspection, but its location alone is not proof of malware.
Should I download ddelib.dll from a DLL website?
No. Random downloads can contain malware or the wrong architecture and release. They can also fail because the real problem is a damaged Autodesk installation or a missing dependency.
Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Restore it through the Autodesk installer. A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application require matching files in their own application directories.
Will Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET restore ddelib.dll?
There is no direct evidence that these Microsoft runtimes supply this Autodesk DLL. Install or repair a runtime only when the error or Autodesk installer specifically identifies it as a missing prerequisite.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
Usually not. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions. It does not repair an ordinary missing Autodesk application library.
What if ddelib.dll exists but Windows still says it is missing?
The message may mean that a dependency of ddelib.dll is missing. Repair or reinstall the exact Autodesk product, and use Autodesk installation logs if the problem continues.
Will SFC repair ddelib.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. It can help with broader Windows corruption, but Autodesk repair or reinstallation is the correct path for ddelib.dll.
What is the safest final fix?
Repair the affected Autodesk installation when that option exists. Otherwise uninstall and reinstall the same AutoCAD or DWG TrueView product from Autodesk’s official source, using the matching application architecture.
