DDR5 is required on AMD AM5 and Intel LGA1851 platforms, while Intel LGA 1700 boards come in both DDR4 and DDR5 versions. For gaming, DDR5 can improve performance in some games, but there is no universal frame-rate gain: results depend on the game, processor, memory kit, and test settings. Check your exact motherboard and CPU before buying RAM, then compare the cost of the whole platform—not just the memory kit.
Does DDR5 actually improve gaming performance?
It can, but the size of the difference varies from game to game and from one test setup to another. TechSpot’s 2025 comparison reported a 7% DDR5 performance gain in Rainbow Six Siege X and a 33% gain in Marvel Rivals, both at medium settings on its tested configurations. Those results describe those tests; they are not forecasts for every PC or a guaranteed gain from switching memory.
TechSpot’s 2024 comparison likewise showed variation across games, including titles with similar results and others where DDR5 led. Tom’s Hardware reported an average performance drop of 14%, reaching up to 25% in some games, in its 2026 comparison of DDR4 and DDR5 on tested Intel LGA 1700 systems. That is a test-specific finding, not an all-platform average. A useful benchmark comparison should identify the CPU, memory speed and timings, game, resolution, graphics settings, and whether it reports average frame rates, 1% lows, or both.
In practice, the game and configuration matter more than a headline percentage. Don’t choose a platform on the assumption that DDR5 will produce the same uplift in every game you play.

Will DDR4 RAM work with my motherboard?
Only if the exact motherboard supports DDR4. DDR4 and DDR5 modules are different generations and are not interchangeable. Intel LGA 1700 processors can be used with motherboards made for either type, so the socket name alone does not tell you which memory to buy. AMD AM5 and Intel LGA1851 are DDR5 platforms, according to the manufacturer compatibility guidance reviewed.
- Find the exact motherboard model. Check the model name and any revision number printed on the board or listed in your system information.
- Open the board’s specifications or manual. Confirm whether it supports DDR4 or DDR5, and review supported capacities, module configurations, and memory data rates.
- Check the CPU’s specifications and board support. Confirm the processor is supported by the board and that the memory kit is appropriate for both. For AM5 and LGA1851, select DDR5.
- Match the kit to the platform. Consider capacity, number of modules, rated data rate, timings, and whether a supported XMP or EXPO profile is appropriate. There is no single best speed established for every CPU and board.
Kingston’s DDR4 and DDR5 compatibility guide and MSI’s memory-selection guide provide manufacturer context; the exact board’s specification remains the decisive check.
How should you compare gaming performance?
Use results that resemble how you play. A comparison at medium settings may not predict results at your preferred resolution or graphics quality, and one game cannot stand in for an entire library. Look for tests using the same CPU and graphics card, with clearly stated memory configurations and settings.

- Average frame rate: useful for comparing overall throughput in a given test.
- 1% lows: useful alongside the average when you care about dips and consistency; compare them only when the test reports them under the same conditions.
- Game selection: prioritize games you play, since DDR5’s reported advantage differs substantially by title.
- Platform context: separate results for different CPU platforms. The 2026 Tom’s Hardware finding applies to its Intel LGA 1700 comparison, not to AM5, LGA1851, or every DDR4-versus-DDR5 matchup.
For more detail, see TechSpot’s 2025 DDR5-versus-DDR4 gaming comparison, its 2024 comparison across PC games, and Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 LGA 1700 DDR4 gaming comparison. Treat their percentages as results from their stated tests, not as a universal gaming uplift.
Which offers better value for a gaming PC?
There is no universal price winner established by the comparisons here. Local kit prices and stock change, and memory is only one part of the cost. For a new build, compare the compatible CPU, motherboard, and memory together; for an existing PC, include the value of keeping hardware you already own.
| Decision factor | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Compatibility | Memory generation supported by the exact motherboard and CPU. |
| Gaming performance | Average frame rate and 1% lows in relevant games, under comparable settings and hardware. |
| Memory configuration | Capacity, number of modules, rated data rate, timings, and supported XMP or EXPO profile. |
| Total platform cost | CPU, motherboard, and memory together, using current local prices and availability. |
| Existing parts and upgrades | Whether your current memory can be reused, and what a platform change means for future upgrades. |
If you are choosing a new DDR5 platform, buy a DDR5 kit that meets the board and CPU specifications. If your LGA 1700 board supports DDR4 and you already have a suitable kit, reusing it may make sense; weigh that saving against the game-specific performance results and the cost of any platform change.
Quick Recap
What to check before ordering a RAM kit
- Verify the motherboard’s exact memory generation before placing an order; a DDR4 module cannot replace DDR5, or vice versa.
- Check CPU and motherboard support together, especially on LGA 1700, where the board determines which memory generation it accepts.
- Confirm the kit’s capacity and module count suit the board’s specifications and your needs.
- Check rated data rate, timings, and profile support rather than assuming a higher number is automatically better for your system.
- Compare current local prices for the complete platform and account for whether existing memory can be reused.
