Dead by Daylight Perks Explained: How to Build a Survivor or Killer Loadout

By VGSources Team 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best Dead by Daylight loadout is not four randomly powerful perks. It is four effects built around one job: information, chase, generator progress, rescue, healing, stealth, slowdown, hooks, snowballing, or the endgame. Start with the job your character and team need, add a perk that makes that job reliable, cover the most likely failure, and reserve the final slot for flexibility. The same method works for Survivors and Killers, even though their triggers, risks, and win conditions differ.

This guide explains what perks do, how progression unlocks them, how to fill all four slots, and how to test whether a combination actually works together under the current live-service rules.

What a perk and a loadout mean

A perk is an equipable gameplay ability. Survivor perks and Killer perks are role-specific, so a perk available while preparing a Survivor cannot simply be moved to a Killer. A loadout is the complete set of pre-trial choices: your four perk slots plus the item, add-ons, offering, or other choices available to that character and role.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Perks generally have a trigger, an effect, and a duration or condition. For example, an effect might begin after a particular interaction, remain active while a condition is true, or become available only once per trial. Read those three parts together. A strong effect that almost never triggers is weaker in practice than a modest effect that activates during the situations you regularly create.

Think of the four slots as a small system:

  • Primary job: the outcome you are deliberately trying to improve.
  • Enabler: a perk that starts, extends, or makes that job more dependable.
  • Failure-state cover: information, protection, recovery, or another answer to the way the plan can break.
  • Flex slot: team support, map adaptation, endgame insurance, or a counter to the lobby and trial conditions.

This structure is more useful than asking for one permanent list of “best perks.” Patch changes, character powers, maps, teammates, and your own skill all change the answer.

How perk progression and unlocking work now

Teachable perks were removed from the Bloodweb. Instead, a character’s Prestige level unlocks that character’s perks for every other character in the same role at a defined tier.

Character Prestige What other characters receive
Prestige 1 That character’s perks at Tier 1
Prestige 2 That character’s perks at Tier 2
Prestige 3 That character’s perks at Tier 3

These thresholds were established in Behaviour Interactive’s 2022 progression update. When planning a roster, decide whether you need broad access to a character’s perk package or only a single character’s own build. Reaching Prestige 3 gives the widest tier access, while Prestige 1 can be a faster way to make a concept available across the role.

Perk names, effects, licensed-character access, and balance rules are live-service facts. Check the character and perk information displayed in your current client before spending progression resources; an older video or screenshot can describe a previous version.

What changed in the loadout interface

Behaviour Interactive’s 2025 quality-of-life initiative added additional perk-loadout slots after A/B testing and allowed players to see their own perk loadouts in the lobby. Update 9.1.0 lists seven available Loadout and Cosmetic presets. Use presets for distinct plans rather than saving minor variations of the same plan: one slot for a normal match, one for a healing or rescue plan, one for a stealth or information plan, and others for map or challenge-specific setups.

Update 9.5.0 revised every Survivor and Killer perk description. The revised text uses simplified, consistent language, expanding tooltips, clearer status-effect labels, and keybinding reminders. Open the expanded tooltip when a trigger seems ambiguous instead of relying on a remembered description from an older patch.

How to build a Survivor loadout

Survivor builds are team decisions even when you queue alone. A perk that improves your own chase may also buy teammates generator time; a rescue or healing perk may be valuable only if someone else is injured or hooked. Before selecting four icons, choose the job you expect to perform most often.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Choose the primary Survivor job

Pick one dominant objective from this list:

  • Information: locate the Killer, identify danger, or make safer routing decisions.
  • Chase: extend a pursuit, create distance, or recover after a failed loop.
  • Objective speed: keep generator progress moving under pressure.
  • Rescue: reach hooks safely and make the unhook sequence more reliable.
  • Healing: restore injured teammates efficiently or make self-recovery less costly.
  • Stealth: avoid an early detection and choose when to take a confrontation.
  • Endgame: preserve escape chances after the gates or final objective become the focus.

Do not select all seven as equal priorities. A four-slot build cannot maximize every axis. State the job in one sentence—for example, “I will keep generators moving while providing information when the Killer leaves a chase.” If a perk does not support that sentence, it must justify its slot as failure-state cover or flexibility.

2. Add an enabler for that job

Choose the perk that most directly starts or maintains your plan. For an information plan, prioritize a dependable trigger and a clear signal over a rare, high-value reveal. For chase, favor an effect you can activate through ordinary movement or interaction rather than one requiring a very specific map feature. For objectives, ask whether the perk helps you begin work, continue it under pressure, or regain progress after being interrupted.

Record the practical trigger in plain language before the match: “after this action,” “while this condition remains,” or “once per trial.” If you cannot describe when it activates, you cannot evaluate its value.

3. Cover the main failure state

Every plan has a predictable way to fail. An objective-focused Survivor may be found first; a chase-focused Survivor may be injured with no safe reset; a rescue plan may arrive too late; a stealth plan may provide little value when the team is already in a prolonged chase. Use the third slot to address that specific failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use information when your plan fails because you cannot find a safe route or target.
  • Use protection or recovery when one hit, hook, or interruption ends your contribution.
  • Use team support when the plan depends on another Survivor reaching a location or completing an interaction.
  • Use an endgame effect when the build is strong early but has no answer after the final generator.

This slot should solve a problem you actually expect, not a hypothetical scenario that occurs once every several matches.

4. Reserve the final slot for flexibility

The fourth slot is where you adapt without abandoning the core plan. Information can be the right choice on an unfamiliar map; team support can be better when playing with less coordinated teammates; an endgame option can stabilize a build that otherwise wins only when the opening is perfect.

Consider the lobby before locking in. If teammates already display several rescue-oriented choices, adding another identical rescue effect may have less value than information or objective pressure. If the Killer’s power commonly forces a particular status effect or movement pattern, choose a perk that helps you recover from that pattern rather than adding a generic bonus.

5. Check trigger overlap and team dependence

Write down the trigger for all four perks and look for conflicts. Four effects that require you to be injured, in a chase, near a hook, or performing the same interaction may appear synergistic but compete for the same short window. Conversely, four effects that all wait for the endgame leave you weak during the minutes when most decisions are made.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mark which effects require teammates. A coordinated group can deliberately create those conditions; solo matchmaking cannot guarantee them. If a build needs a teammate to heal, take a hit, or arrive at a hook, give yourself a fallback effect or accept that the build is team-dependent.

6. Compare a Survivor build on the right axes

After several trials, judge the build by the outcomes it was designed to change:

Axis Question to ask
Generator progress Did the build create or preserve meaningful work time?
Chase extension Did it add decisions or distance before the down?
Information quality Did you receive actionable knowledge early enough to use it?
Rescue and healing support Did it make the interaction safer or reduce downtime?
Survivability Did it provide a recovery route after the expected failure?
Endgame reliability Did it still matter when the trial reached its final phase?

Do not call a build weak because it did not produce a flashy event. If its purpose was information, measure whether you avoided unsafe areas and started useful actions sooner. If its purpose was rescue, measure safe hook pressure and reduced teammate downtime.

How to build a Killer loadout

A Killer’s power is the starting point, not an afterthought. The best four perks usually convert what the power already does into pressure while covering the situations in which that power is least reliable.

1. Identify what the power already does well

Ask whether the power naturally provides tracking, chase control, mobility, injury pressure, downing potential, hook access, or snowball opportunities. Do not spend multiple slots duplicating a strength you can already access consistently. If the power finds Survivors easily, a fourth tracking effect may be less valuable than a way to turn a found Survivor into generator pressure.

2. Choose one pressure plan

Select the main route by which you expect to win time:

  • Tracking: find the next target quickly and reduce empty patrol time.
  • Chase control: make each pursuit shorter or more predictable.
  • Generator slowdown: delay completion while you create hooks.
  • Hook progression: gain value from reaching and protecting hook states.
  • Snowballing: turn one injury or down into several simultaneous problems.
  • Endgame: retain a reliable conversion plan when early pressure was limited.

A plan gives the build a time horizon. Tracking and chase control matter from the first contact; snowballing may require an initial down; endgame choices may be dormant until late. Fill the other slots so the build can reach that phase rather than assuming it begins there.

3. Choose reliable information or conversion

Prioritize perks that either reveal where pressure should go or convert your power’s successful use into another advantage. Reliable information reduces the time between chases. Conversion effects prevent a successful power hit, injury, or down from becoming an isolated event with no effect on the rest of the map.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When comparing two options, estimate how often each can trigger in a normal trial, not an ideal highlight. A lower peak with frequent activation usually creates more pressure than a spectacular effect that depends on a rare sequence.

4. Cover the power’s blind spot

Every Killer power has a weakness: poor map-wide reach, a difficult first chase, recovery after a miss, weak performance in particular terrain, or limited pressure when Survivors separate. Use one or two slots to address the most expensive weakness.

  • For a power that struggles to locate targets, add map-wide or post-action information.
  • For a power that loses time after a failed chase, add recovery or a way to redirect pressure.
  • For a power that excels in chase but cannot protect generators, add a pressure effect that buys time between hooks.
  • For a power that snowballs only after an early down, add a reliable opening plan instead of another late-game effect.

5. Compare Killer builds by pressure, not icon rarity

Axis Evaluation question
Time to first chase How quickly does the build convert the opening into contact?
Information uptime After a chase or hook, do you know where to apply the next action?
Chase conversion Does a power hit or successful interaction become a down efficiently?
Generator pressure Can you delay several objectives while pursuing and hooking?
Hook progression Does reaching a hook create a reason for Survivors to move or make mistakes?
Snowball potential Can one down produce more than one simultaneous problem?
Map dependence Does the plan collapse on maps with different sightlines or terrain?

Keep a build when it improves the axis it was designed for, even if another build produces more dramatic single moments. Change it when the weakness appears repeatedly and is not explained by execution or an unusually unfavorable map.

How perks work together: triggers, coverage, and diminishing returns

Synergy is not simply putting four effects with similar words together. Good synergy means one effect creates the condition another exploits, or that different effects protect the plan at different stages of a trial.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sequence the triggers

Arrange your build mentally as a sequence: opening information, first interaction, pressure conversion, and recovery or endgame. If every perk waits for the same event, the build may be excellent for one moment and empty afterward. A staggered sequence gives you useful decisions throughout the trial.

Separate triggers from outcomes

Two perks may both mention healing, generators, hooks, or chases while doing different jobs. One may make the action faster; another may reveal danger afterward; a third may protect the player who performs it. Treat those as complementary only if their activation windows do not prevent one another.

Account for current diminishing returns

Update 9.6.0 applies diminishing returns when identical modifiers from powers, items, perks, and offerings stack. Repeating the same type of bonus therefore does not guarantee full additive value. A build with four versions of one modifier can deliver less marginal benefit than a varied build that improves information, conversion, and recovery separately.

Before using repeated modifiers, ask whether each additional copy changes a decision or merely increases a number you already have enough of. If the answer is the latter, replace one copy with a different function and test whether the wider coverage produces more successful trials.

  1. State the job: “My main contribution this trial is …”
  2. Choose the enabler: record its exact trigger and what success looks like.
  3. Name the failure: identify the event that would make the plan stop working.
  4. Fill the cover slot: select information, protection, recovery, or support for that failure.
  5. Choose flexibility: add team utility, map adaptation, or endgame insurance.
  6. Check dependencies: mark any trigger that requires a teammate, a specific phase, or a particular map situation.
  7. Check repetition: look for identical modifiers affected by the 9.6.0 diminishing-returns rule.
  8. Save a preset: use one of the seven Loadout and Cosmetic presets for the finished plan, then keep a deliberately different alternative.

After a match, record which slot activated, which slot never activated, and whether the failure came from the build or from execution. Replace only one perk at a time when testing. Otherwise you will not know which change improved the result.

Common loadout mistakes and fixes

Choosing four generally strong effects

Symptom: every icon looks useful, but the build has no clear win condition. Fix: assign a primary job and remove the effect that contributes least to it or to its failure-state cover.

Duplicating a strength

Symptom: the build performs well when its ideal trigger occurs but has no answer when the opponent avoids it. Fix: exchange one duplicate for information, recovery, or a counter to the power or map.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring activation conditions

Symptom: a perk appears inactive for most of the trial. Fix: read the expanded 9.5.0 tooltip, identify the exact condition, and decide whether your chosen job naturally creates it.

Building around teammates who may not cooperate

Symptom: the plan is excellent in a coordinated group and unreliable in solo matchmaking. Fix: add a personal fallback or move the team-dependent effect to the flexibility slot.

Stacking identical modifiers

Symptom: a fourth similar bonus adds less than expected. Fix: diversify the build because update 9.6.0 reduces the benefit of identical modifiers from multiple sources.

Using an old guide without checking the client

Symptom: a remembered trigger, tier, or description does not match the game. Fix: verify the current in-game tooltip and patch context. Live-service perk names, effects, and access rules can change.

What “best” means for Survivor and Killer builds

There is no single best four-perk loadout independent of role, character, map, teammates, and objective. A best Survivor build is the one that reliably improves the job you can perform and still gives you a response to its main failure. A best Killer build turns the character’s power into pressure, supplies information when that power is not enough, and avoids wasting slots on redundant modifiers.

Behaviour Interactive described the large 2022 perk update as “an intentional attempt to shake things up,” according to Design Director Matt S. That context matters: a build that was dominant before a redesign or balance pass is not automatically the right answer now. The same official work reported qualitative preference for generator-regression effects among Killers and “second chance” effects among Survivors, based on internal data and community feedback, but it did not establish a current, complete win-rate or pick-rate table for one universally recommended build.

Use those observations as categories to evaluate, not as a command to copy four popular icons. Define the job, verify the triggers, cover the failure, diversify repeated modifiers, and judge the result by the axis your loadout was meant to improve.
