Dead Effect arrived on Google Play for Android on October 15, 2013. The sci-fi survival-horror shooter puts players aboard a spacecraft overrun by infected crew members, pairing first-person gunfights with weapon upgrades, survival arenas and a free-to-download model that includes ads and in-app purchases.
What launched, and when?
The Android edition of Dead Effect launched on Google Play on October 15, 2013, according to its release record. Droid Life covered the arrival on October 21 and called it a launch from “last week,” which fits that date. The launch report described the Android game as free with in-app purchases; the game had appeared on iOS earlier, where contemporary coverage described it as a paid release.
The Android release was a mobile-first-person-shooter take on science-fiction horror, rather than an Earthbound outbreak story. Its hook was a derelict-feeling spaceship, hostile former crew and fast, direct shooting.
What is Dead Effect about?
The player wakes from hibernation aboard the ESS Meridian as a member of Unit 13. The Google Play description places the awakening on September 7, 2045, after 178 days in hibernation. The crew is missing or transformed, and the player investigates the emergency while fighting zombie-like infected aboard the ship. “Space zombies” is a quick description of the threat, but the setting is an infected spacecraft crew, not a conventional zombie apocalypse on Earth.

How does the gameplay work?
Campaign and combat
Dead Effect is a single-player first-person shooter built around moving through the ship and fighting its hostile inhabitants. The Google Play listing advertises more than five hours of story gameplay; that is the store’s stated estimate, not a guaranteed completion time. The campaign also mixes combat with exploration and light puzzle-solving, according to Pocket Gamer’s contemporary coverage.
Weapons, abilities and replay modes
The game offers weapons to find and upgrade, an armory, achievements and survival-mode arenas. Its store description also highlights an ability to slow time, giving players another tool during fights. Droid Life singled out customizable weapons, multiple playable characters, fluid controls and the space setting as notable features at launch. These features give the campaign more variety than a sequence of identical corridor shootouts, while keeping shooting at the center.

How demanding was it on Android?
Performance was a concern from the start. Droid Life characterized the game as CPU-intensive and said a Galaxy Note 3 became hot during play. That is a report about one device in 2013, not evidence that every phone will heat up in the same way; it does show that the game pushed hardware even by the standards of its launch era.
The current Google Play description says the game needs at least 160 MB of free RAM. That is a minimum free-memory statement, not a full modern compatibility specification or a guarantee that the game will run well. Android version, device architecture, graphics drivers, available storage and regional Play Store eligibility may also affect installation or operation. Check the listing on the device you plan to use: a game can remain visible in the store without being installable on every current phone or tablet.

Is Dead Effect free?
The Android game was free to download at launch, and its current Google Play listing identifies ads and in-app purchases. “Free” therefore describes the installation price, not necessarily an ad-free or purchase-free experience. The listing does not establish that every item or feature can be accessed without spending money, and individual purchase prices can vary or change.
Is Dead Effect still available?
Dead Effect remains listed on Google Play in the United States storefront represented by the listing. It shows 5M+ downloads, a 4.3-star rating, and an update date of June 10, 2026; download totals, ratings and listing details can change, and availability may differ by country or device. The page currently attributes the app to App Holdings LLC. That is the storefront label, not proof that App Holdings developed the original game: historical release information identifies inDev Brain as developer, while launch-era coverage associated the release with BulkyPix and BadFly Interactive.

A live listing does not establish active development or comprehensive support for newer Android versions. If installation is blocked or the game fails to load, compatibility may be specific to the device or software version. Reports of black screens and other problems are anecdotal and do not establish a universal defect. For players whose Android devices are incompatible, the original also has a desktop release; Steam’s support page for Dead Effect is one official desktop route. The Android and desktop editions should not be assumed to have identical controls or technical requirements.
Why the 2013 launch still stands out
Dead Effect was a notable mobile FPS because it combined conventional first-person shooting with a spaceship-horror setting at a time when its graphics and hardware demands were part of the pitch. The original launch news was accurate, and the game is still listed on Google Play, but that is not a promise of compatibility with every modern device. It makes most sense for players curious about older mobile shooters who can confirm their device is eligible and are comfortable with ads and in-app purchases.
