Verdict: Dead Space Remake is an excellent PS5 survival-horror game for newcomers and a substantial return visit for fans of the 2008 original. Its rebuilt visuals, layered dismemberment system, revised story presentation and oppressive audio make the USG Ishimura feel dangerous again. Choose the reported 60-fps Performance mode if responsive movement matters most, or the 30-fps ray-tracing mode if you prefer a more image-focused presentation. The remake offers unusually granular difficulty and accessibility controls, although the value of its DualSense effects depends on your taste.
This is a spoiler-light assessment of the 2023 release. It distinguishes Electronic Arts’ confirmed features from launch reviewers’ subjective observations, and it does not treat either PS5 graphics target as a guarantee of identical results in every scene, display setup or later patch.

What Dead Space Remake is
Electronic Arts announced Dead Space as a remake “completely rebuilt from the ground up.” The project targets the same science-fiction survival-horror premise while updating the story, characters, gameplay, visuals, audio and controls. EA announced PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC versions, and the game launched on January 27, 2023. You play engineer Isaac Clarke as he searches the mining ship USG Ishimura after communications fail, scavenging for resources while trying to survive the creatures that have overrun it.
The remake is not simply a higher-resolution version of the original. It reworks the presentation and many systems around a modern third-person horror game, while preserving the central idea that enemies are best stopped by strategically removing their limbs rather than emptying ammunition into their torsos. Returning players will recognize the ship and broad scenario, but the new version changes enough details in pacing, characterisation and moment-to-moment play to make a replay worthwhile.
#1 Best Overall
EA’s launch announcement also identifies the Peeling System, which reconstructs Necromorph bodies in layers of flesh, tendons and bone that react as you fight. That system is central to the remake’s combat feedback: hits visibly remove tissue and expose the limb you need to target next.
What has changed without spoiling the story
A more character-led journey
The original Dead Space often delivered its story through environmental clues and radio conversations while Isaac remained comparatively quiet. The remake gives the protagonist a more active presence and expands how the crew and the Ishimura’s disaster are presented. Those changes are intended to make the journey easier to follow for first-time players without turning it into a conventional action game. Familiar locations and major beats remain recognizable, but conversations, character relationships and the route through the ship have been adjusted.
A ship designed for sustained tension
The Ishimura is presented as a connected environment rather than a sequence of isolated levels. Revisiting areas, restoring power and using tram connections make the ship feel like a place with a history and an operating infrastructure. That structure supports horror differently from a corridor-only campaign: a room you have already crossed can become threatening when a later objective sends you back through it, and the sound design can make a safe-looking route feel uncertain.

Combat built around readable damage
The Peeling System makes every shot communicate information. A limb can lose its outer flesh before the underlying structure is exposed, so you can see whether continued fire is opening a useful target or wasting ammunition. The effect is more than cosmetic; it reinforces the game’s dismemberment logic and makes enemy encounters easier to read than a conventional health-bar system.
Rank #2
That does not mean every encounter becomes simple. Ammunition, healing and stasis remain resources, and cramped rooms can force you to choose between precision and speed. The remake’s combat is strongest when several threats overlap and you must decide which limb to disable, which enemy to slow and when to retreat.
PS5 presentation: Performance or ray tracing?
Launch reviews from TechRadar and Push Square report two PS5 presentation targets. Performance mode targets 60 frames per second, while the alternative targets 30 frames per second with ray tracing. These are reviewer-reported modes and targets, not a promise that every scene will remain locked to its target on every display or software version.
| PS5 option | Reported target | What it prioritizes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Performance | 60 fps target | Smoother camera movement and more immediate control response | Players who value aiming, dodging and traversal fluidity |
| Ray-tracing mode | 30 fps target | More image-focused lighting and ray-traced presentation | Players willing to trade motion smoothness for visual atmosphere |
In a third-person horror game, the difference is practical rather than theoretical. A smoother camera makes it easier to track a Necromorph’s exposed limb, turn during a surprise attack and inspect a room without judder. The 30-fps option can appeal if you sit close to a large display and prefer the additional lighting presentation, but slower motion is noticeable during combat and fast camera turns.
There is no verified resolution figure in the available official material, so this review does not assign one to either mode. Display technology, viewing distance, scene complexity and subsequent patches can also affect how the modes look. Start with Performance if you are unsure; switch only if the visual treatment of the ray-tracing mode matters more to you than responsiveness.

How much do the DualSense features add?
The PS5 version uses DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers. TechRadar highlights the way those effects can give weapons and combat more physical weight, while Push Square finds the implementation less compelling. That disagreement is useful context: the effects are present, but their contribution to immersion is subjective rather than a universal advantage.
Haptics can make weapon operation, impacts and environmental activity feel more tactile, while trigger resistance can make firing or using equipment feel less like a frictionless button press. The exact strength and frequency of those effects varies by action, and it is not accurate to claim that every weapon or interaction uses an identical treatment. If you already enjoy subtle controller feedback, the DualSense layer is a welcome addition. If you normally disable haptics or play with a headset and low controller volume, it is unlikely to determine whether the remake works for you.
Does the horror still work?
Atmosphere over constant jumps
Dead Space’s fear comes from uncertainty, sound and constrained resources as much as from sudden attacks. The Ishimura’s machinery, emergency lighting and distant noises create pressure before an enemy appears. Because the remake lets you revisit parts of the ship, tension can build through anticipation: a familiar hallway is no longer neutral once you have learned how quickly an encounter can begin.

The Peeling System makes combat more graphic and more legible at the same time. You can see the consequences of a shot, but the exposed tissue and bone also underline how much punishment a creature can absorb. That visual clarity supports decision-making without removing the stress of having limited time and space.

Who may find it too intense
This is still a survival-horror game built around gore, darkness, startling audio and vulnerable movement. Players looking for a relaxed exploration game, a cover shooter or a short action campaign may find the pacing oppressive. The settings menu can reduce some presentation barriers and challenge pressure, but it does not transform the game into a non-horror experience.
Difficulty options and what each one changes
EA’s PS5 gameplay settings documentation lists five difficulty choices. The differences affect damage, survivability and, at the highest level, saving rules.
| Difficulty | Rules described by EA | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Story | Isaac deals substantially more damage; incoming damage is reduced; oxygen lasts longer; automatic healing is added; enemy grapples are easier to escape. | Players who want the narrative and atmosphere with less combat pressure. |
| Easy | Provides smaller versions of several Story-mode advantages. | Players new to survival horror who still want a conventional challenge. |
| Medium | Baseline damage rules. | The standard starting point for most players. |
| Hard | Isaac takes more damage while enemies take less. | Experienced players seeking tighter resource and combat decisions. |
| Impossible | Uses Hard’s damage rules, disables autosaves, allows one save slot and one life. On death, you can restart the run or continue on Hard. Completing it awards a unique suit and weapon. | Players who deliberately want a high-stakes replay and accept losing the run. |
These options let you tune the relationship between fear and friction. Story mode does not merely lower enemy health; its longer oxygen supply, automatic healing and easier grapple escapes change how often you must manage emergencies. Conversely, Impossible is a ruleset for a committed challenge run, not a sensible first playthrough unless you specifically enjoy one-life campaigns.

Accessibility and control settings on PS5
EA’s PS5 accessibility resource lists a broad set of configurable options. EA notes that this information is provided for the United States and in English, so menu names and availability can differ in other regions or languages.
Best Value
- Classic light gun rebuilt with modern graphics
- Fast-paced zombie shooting action with multiple endings
- Cooperative game mode for shared action
- Updated controls optimized for PS4
- Replayable game with scoring and updates
- Menu narration with adjustable volume.
- Subtitle color and size controls, plus speaker names and colors.
- Color-blind filters and contrast adjustments.
- Motion-blur control.
- Customizable controls.
- Aim assistance.
- One-press quick-time-event behavior.
- Language and subtitle options.
- Separate dialog, effects, music and background-audio controls.
These settings address several common barriers: reading small text, distinguishing interface elements, repeated button presses during a stressful event, motion sensitivity and balancing speech against effects. They do not constitute a complete accessibility evaluation, and the best combination depends on your needs. Before starting, open the options menu and configure subtitles, contrast, motion blur and audio mix rather than waiting for a difficult scene to expose a problem.
Is it friendly to newcomers or mainly for returning fans?
Newcomers can start here without playing the original. The remake explains the Ishimura’s situation through its revised character interactions, objectives and environmental storytelling, while the dismemberment system communicates its combat logic through visible damage. You may need a few encounters to learn when to use a weapon, stasis or the environment, but the game does not assume knowledge of the 2008 release.
Returning players get more than nostalgia. Familiar rooms can contain altered routes or new reasons to revisit them, and the expanded character focus changes the emotional context of events you remember. The broad story remains recognizable, so players seeking a completely different plot should adjust expectations. The appeal is seeing a known survival-horror structure rebuilt with modern audiovisual detail and revised pacing.

There is no evidence here for a current price comparison between PS5 and PC, nor for a claim that one platform is universally superior. On PS5, the relevant choice is the presentation mode you prefer and whether DualSense support matters to you. If you own a capable PC, compare its current hardware requirements and settings separately rather than assuming the console modes map directly to a particular PC preset.
Strengths and limitations at a glance
Why it works
- A ground-up remake that updates story, characters, gameplay, visuals, audio and controls rather than only increasing resolution.
- The Peeling System makes dismemberment both visually striking and tactically readable.
- A connected Ishimura supports revisits, escalating tension and environmental storytelling.
- Two reported PS5 presentation targets let you choose responsiveness or ray-traced image treatment.
- Five difficulty levels, including a highly forgiving Story mode and a one-life Impossible mode.
- Useful subtitle, narration, contrast, control, audio, motion-blur, aim-assist and quick-time-event options.
What to weigh before starting
- The 30-fps ray-tracing target sacrifices motion smoothness that is valuable during aiming and combat.
- Reviewers disagree about how transformative the DualSense effects feel.
- The campaign remains deliberately intense, graphic and resource-conscious even on lower difficulties.
- Returning players will recognize the underlying story, so the remake is an enhancement rather than an entirely new narrative.
- Impossible mode’s disabled autosaves, single save slot and one-life rule can erase a run after a death.
Who should play Dead Space Remake on PS5?
Choose it if you want a modern survival-horror campaign with a strong sense of place, deliberate dismemberment combat and enough settings to tailor the challenge. It is especially easy to recommend to newcomers who want the definitive current starting point, and to returning fans who value rebuilt atmosphere and revised character work more than surprise plot developments.
Be more cautious if you dislike gore, cannot tolerate sustained audio tension or expect a fast action game. Start on Medium for the intended baseline, Easy or Story if combat could obscure the narrative, and reserve Impossible for a separate challenge run. For the PS5 mode, Performance is the safer default for combat; choose the 30-fps ray-tracing target only when its visual priorities matter more than fluid control.
