Deadlock beginner’s guide: controls, objectives, and how a match works

Deadlock is a 6v6 third-person MOBA shooter. You win by destroying the enemy Patron, not by finishing with the most kills. A successful match alternates between accurate shooting, collecting and spending souls, preserving movement stamina, and turning won fights into permanent structure damage.

This guide explains the controls by function, the soul economy, the Guardian-to-Patron objective route, and a repeatable first-match plan. The figures for structures are current game data listed by Deadlock.io in 2026.

What a Deadlock match asks you to do

Deadlock combines the direct aim and movement of a third-person shooter with lane-based farming, item purchases, ability upgrades and map objectives. Deadlock Atlas describes the core loop as choosing a hero, farming souls, buying items, leveling abilities and destroying objectives. Every part supports the same question: what can your team gain that remains after the next respawn?

A kill is useful because it can create time and numbers for a push, but it is not the win condition by itself. Chasing an escaping opponent while a wave, a purchase or a vulnerable structure is available can leave you poorer than the player who stopped to collect nearby rewards. The official Getting started guidance recommends returning from a trade with enough health, ammunition and position to take the next wave, while tracking flying soul orbs and nearby pickups separately.

Controls: learn functions before memorizing keys

There is no single immutable default keyboard table in the available official material. Keybinds can be changed, and patch notes document keyboard, mouse and controller glyphs, keybind settings and updated in-match button hints. Open the game’s keybind menu and learn what each input does on your own layout rather than assuming another player’s keys match yours.

Movement and camera

  • Movement and camera aim: use the movement stick or keys to position your hero and the mouse or right stick to aim. Keep your view directed toward the next threat, retreat route or soul orb rather than staring only at the current target.
  • Jump, mantle and crouch/slide: these movement actions change how you cross terrain and avoid fire. Walking, sliding and mantling can preserve stamina and leave more options for the next exchange.
  • Dash and aerial actions: treat them as limited resources. Spending every dash to enter a fight can leave you unable to break line of sight when the fight turns.

Weapons and abilities

  • Fire and reload: shooting wins the immediate duel, but ammunition is part of your return-to-lane check. A low-ammunition retreat is often safer than forcing a second trade.
  • Four hero abilities: identify the input for each ability and practice one short sequence in a safe setting. You do not need to memorize every possible combo before your first match; you do need to know which button starts your damage, control or escape.
  • Active items: an active item is triggered by pressing its bound key, rather than providing only a passive statistic. The Slowing Hex item page gives the current example binding group as Z/X/C/V. Check your own bindings and learn the activation, range and cooldown before committing to a fight.

Information controls

Find the scoreboard, minimap and any extra-information inputs before the match becomes busy. The scoreboard helps you understand the state of the game; the minimap shows where pressure, allies and objectives may be developing. Looking at either is a deliberate habit, not an emergency action.

Stamina is an escape budget

The official movement guide frames stamina as a budget for reaching a position while retaining a response. That changes how a beginner should move. Do not spend every dash or aerial action simply to arrive at an opponent. Walk, slide or mantle when those options are sufficient, and preserve at least one reliable way to leave.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Approaching a trade

  1. Move into a position from which you can see the opponent and a retreat route.
  2. Use lower-cost movement to take cover, collect a reward or adjust your angle.
  3. Commit a dash or aerial action only when the resulting position has a clear purpose, such as dodging a known attack or reaching a finishing angle.
  4. After the first exchange, reassess stamina before pursuing. If your escape options are gone, the correct play may be to stop dealing damage and return to safety.

Why this matters in lane

A lane fight rarely ends the moment health bars meet. You may still need to collect a flying soul orb, avoid the next attack, secure the following wave or retreat before an opposing rotation arrives. Retaining movement lets you do those jobs; exhausting it for a short approach can turn a winning trade into a death and a lost wave.

Souls, denies and ability points

Souls are both the match economy and a progression resource. Lane activity and nearby rewards provide them. You spend souls on items and growth, so collecting consistently is as important as landing shots.

Collecting a wave

Stay near the wave long enough to secure its rewards, then check nearby pickups and flying soul orbs. The Getting started guide specifically separates flying orbs and nearby pickups in its advice, because leaving either behind can erase the advantage you earned by winning a trade.

What a deny means

A deny is contesting an enemy flying soul orb. It is not a generic term for harassing a player or destroying a minion. Watch for the orb, decide whether you can contest it safely, and avoid abandoning your own collection or exposing yourself to a bad chase for a low-value attempt.

Souls versus AP

Ability points, abbreviated AP in the glossary, are separate from souls. Souls are the economic resource that also drives progression; AP refers specifically to ability points. Keep the terms distinct when reading a build or listening to a teammate callout.

The spending decision

Before leaving lane, give the purchase a job. A defensive response, a way to improve your next wave, or a tool for a planned engagement is easier to evaluate than buying an item because it is available. Return before the opponent gets a free push, and do not let a low-probability chase delay a purchase or the next reward cycle.

How the objective route works

Structures convert temporary combat advantages into map progress. The usual route moves from lane Guardians to Walkers, then through base defenses and the Patron. The exact attackable target depends on which defenses remain and on the current objective stage.

Structure Role in the route Current listed health Persistent consequence
Guardian First major lane defense 5,500 HP Opening lane progress
Walker Lane objective behind a Guardian 4,000 HP Destroying an enemy Walker opens an extra item slot
Base Guardian Base defense before the final area 6,000 HP Clearing the base defense advances access toward the Patron
Patron Final enemy objective 12,000 HP Destroying it ends the match

These health values are current game data listed by Deadlock.io in 2026. They are not a promise that every future patch will retain the same numbers.

Guardians

Guardians are the first major defenses in a lane. A won skirmish does not automatically justify attacking one: check your health, ammunition, stamina and the location of enemy players. If the structure cannot be damaged safely, clear the wave and reset instead of donating the advantage.

Walkers

Walkers sit behind Guardians as lane objectives. Their destruction does more than remove a defensive obstacle: it opens an extra item slot for the team that destroys the enemy Walker. That lasting reward is why a post-fight Walker attempt can be better than another chase.

Base Guardians and the final area

Base Guardians protect the enemy base. Reaching the base does not make the Patron immediately killable. The remaining defenses and the current objective stage determine what your team can attack, so do not run past a required defense because the Patron is visible.

Shrines and the Patron

Shrines are part of the base-defense sequence that must be cleared according to the current stage before the Patron can be finished. Once the route is open, the Patron is the decisive target. Destroying the enemy Patron ends the match; a team can therefore be ahead in kills and still lose if it fails to protect its own route or finish the enemy objective.

Other map objectives and when to take them

Not every objective is interchangeable with a structure. The map objectives guide identifies rewards and preparation requirements that make each event situational.

Rejuvenator and Mid-Boss

A Rejuvenator provides team revive credits. Consider the reward alongside your team’s health, ammunition, available damage and enemy respawn timers. Starting it while opponents can arrive first may trade a temporary fight win for a disastrous wipe.

Soul Urn

Delivering the Soul Urn provides a delivery reward. Its value is tied to the timing and safety of the route, not merely to carrying it whenever it appears. A carrier who leaves a wave or walks into an enemy setup without support may surrender more souls and map control than the delivery is worth.

Unstable Rift and neutral camps

Urn delivery and Unstable Rift are separate events with different preparations. Treat them as different calls rather than using one name for both. Neutral camps and other map events should be selected according to reward, timing, your current health and the enemy’s respawns.

The first-match loop

Use this loop until the decisions become automatic:

  1. Pick a hero and one short sequence. Learn the input order for a basic damage, control or escape sequence instead of trying to master every interaction.
  2. Take a lane. Stay close enough to collect souls from lane activity and nearby rewards.
  3. Trade with an exit in mind. Preserve stamina and ammunition; do not spend every movement option to start the fight.
  4. Collect the aftermath. Secure your own rewards and contest a flying enemy orb only when the attempt is safe.
  5. Buy for a clear purpose. Choose an item or growth option that answers the next problem, then return before the opponent receives a free push.
  6. Rotate with a reason. Leave lane to protect an ally, defend a structure, join an objective or create another concrete gain. A rotation without a destination or outcome is usually lost farming time.
  7. Convert a won fight. Ask whether the available result is a wave, Guardian, Walker, map control or a safe neutral objective.
  8. Reset when the finish is unsafe. Low health, empty ammunition or imminent enemy respawns are reasons to stop attacking, heal or spend, and prepare for the next cycle.

Turning a kill into lasting progress

Immediately after an enemy dies, check four things: your team’s surviving health, the next wave, the nearest structure and enemy respawn timing. If the structure is reachable and your team can leave safely, damage it. If not, collect the wave and nearby rewards, establish vision or position, and reset.

This discipline prevents a common beginner error: winning a duel but losing the map because the survivor chases another target across the lane. The official Getting started guidance emphasizes returning with enough health, ammunition and position to collect the next wave. A kill is an opening; the objective is the lasting result you choose during that opening.

Rotations, peeling and clear callouts

A rotation is moving toward another part of the map. State the destination and purpose: “rotating to defend Walker,” “rotating to protect Urn carrier,” or “rotating for Rejuvenator.” That tells teammates what they should expect and prevents several players from wandering toward different rewards.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Peeling means helping an ally escape pressure. Peeling is not the same as chasing the enemy who initiated the attack. Use the term with a target—“peel our carrier”—so the team knows that preserving an ally is the immediate objective.

Control-effect vocabulary

  • Silence: removes the affected character’s ability to use specified abilities.
  • Stun: prevents the affected character from acting for its duration.
  • Disarm: removes weapon use while it applies.
  • Immobilize: prevents movement while other actions may differ by effect.

These terms describe different actions being removed. Pair the effect with a target and destination instead of saying only “control them.”

Choosing a beginner-friendly plan

The glossary’s role and build labels describe a plan or contribution; they do not guarantee identical purchases or an identical outcome. Evaluate a hero or build using practical questions:

  • Movement complexity: can you reach and leave a fight without spending every stamina option?
  • Ability timing: is the main sequence easy to recognize and repeat?
  • Lane safety: can you collect souls without taking constant high-risk trades?
  • Range and aim demand: does the weapon pattern match your ability to track targets?
  • Team utility: can you protect, peel or create an opening for allies?
  • Escape reliability: do you retain a response when the first plan fails?
  • Objective conversion: after a won fight, can the choice clearly help secure a wave, structure or safe map event?

Use the same axes when comparing equipment. A gaming mouse can be directly useful for mouse aiming and configurable bindings, but no particular brand, model or price is required to learn the game.

Common beginner mistakes and corrections

“I have more kills, so we are winning.”

Check structures and the Patron route instead. Kills matter when they create time for waves, purchases, objectives or defense. If no lasting progress follows, the scoreboard can disguise a losing map state.

“I should chase every low-health opponent.”

Compare the chase with the next wave, a safe purchase, a defensive response and the nearest objective. Stop when the expected reward no longer justifies the lost souls or the risk of an ambush.

“I used every dash to get close.”

Keep one movement response for the exit. Walking, sliding and mantling can often provide the approach while preserving stamina for the exchange.

“The Patron is visible, so attack it.”

Remaining defenses and the current stage decide what is attackable. Clear the required Base Guardians and Shrine sequence before committing to the Patron.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“An active item is just another passive stat.”

Bind it, identify its input and practice pressing it deliberately. Active items are cooldown decisions; forgetting the activation means you are not receiving the item’s full value.

A compact pre-fight checklist

  • Do I know which wave or reward I am about to collect?
  • Do I have enough health and ammunition to remain after the trade?
  • Which stamina option is my escape?
  • What does my next purchase solve?
  • If we win, which structure or objective can we reach safely?
  • Where are enemy respawns and likely rotations?
  • Am I protecting an ally, defending a structure or pursuing a specific reward?

Answering these questions keeps the shooter mechanics, soul economy and objective game connected. As your aim improves, the same framework still determines whether a fight actually wins the match.
