Deadlock is a free-to-play, invite-only Windows PC game from Valve that combines a third-person shooter with MOBA systems. What is Deadlock?
Deadlock mixes aiming and movement from a third-person shooter with the team structure of a multiplayer online battle arena. Each team advances through lanes while troopers push forward. Valve still describes the game as unfinished. In a 2026 Steam Community News development update, the team said it expects to adjust progression and hero or hideout customization substantially in response to feedback before full release. There is no announced release date. Treat every access rule, balance value, roster total, and progression requirement as subject to change.
How do you get Deadlock?
Access is invite-only
The current access method is an invitation from a Steam friend who already has Deadlock. You cannot purchase access, and there is no public sign-up process listed in the cited October 2026 FAQ. If an invitation is available, it is delivered through Steam; avoid third-party “keys” or paid access claims.

Because this is a PC shooter designed around precise camera control, a comfortable gaming mouse for Deadlock can be a practical accessory. Valve does not endorse any particular hardware brand, and a new mouse will not compensate for poor positioning or unspent Souls.
How many heroes are in Deadlock?
The cited FAQ recorded 43 playable heroes on October 16, 2026. Nurse Harrow was scheduled to become the sixth City Never Sleeps hero on October 20. That means the number can change within days as patches add, remove, or rework characters. Check the current in-game roster or the latest patch notes before treating 43 as the present total.
There is no dependable permanent tier list while the roster and balance are moving. A better way to compare a first hero is to examine the demands the character places on you:

How long is a Deadlock match?
A normal Standard match usually takes 25 to 45 minutes. The exact duration depends on lane control, how efficiently teams convert Souls into pressure, and whether the final base defense stalls the game. Plan enough uninterrupted time to finish; leaving a long match is more damaging to teammates than declining to queue.

Street Brawl is a quicker 4v4, round-based alternative. It is designed for shorter sessions than Standard, although the precise duration varies with the number of rounds and how quickly teams win them.

What changed about Standard and Street Brawl?
A Valve update dated January 30, 2026 added hero banning to both Standard and Street Brawl. Each player can mark one hero to avoid, and two total bans are used. Bans therefore influence the opening roster without removing every disliked character from a match; check the current in-game presentation because the interface can evolve.

The same update changed party-roster protection: parties of three or more need four heroes in their roster rather than three. Unlock enough choices before queueing as a larger group so a ban or unavailable pick does not leave someone without an eligible hero.
How does Souls-based progression work?
Souls have two jobs
Souls are both your spending currency and a progression resource. You earn them through lane activity and other match actions, then use them in the shop for items that change your immediate combat power. Souls also contribute to milestone progression through boons.
Boons and ability points
Boons are progression milestones tied to earned Souls. Depending on the milestone, a boon may grant statistics, ability points, or an unlock. An ability unlock adds another action to your kit. An ability upgrade changes how an action you already have works. Read the resulting description instead of assuming every point is a simple damage increase: an upgrade can alter timing, coverage, utility, or the way a combo functions.

A practical spending loop
- Collect income safely. Take lane opportunities without staying in a dangerous position for one more last hit. Watch enemy locations and incoming damage while gathering Souls.
- Leave a bad trade. Return with enough health and ammunition to contest the next wave. Staying to recover a few extra Souls can cost an entire wave or a death.
- Convert income before the next fight. Buy an item or ability improvement that helps the situation you expect next: surviving pressure, reaching a target, dealing damage, or controlling space.
- Reassess after each purchase. A high net-worth number is not a guaranteed duel win if the advantage is still unspent. Your effective strength is what your current items, abilities, health, and ammunition can do now.
- Spend ability points deliberately. Unlock a new action when your team needs an additional tool; upgrade an existing action when improving a reliable combo or response is more valuable.
Think of Souls as tempo, not a score to hoard. The best purchase is the one that improves your next meaningful interaction while preserving enough resources to remain on the map.

Standard parties
Standard is the normal social queue. The cited FAQ says players can party without a stated party-size or skill-gap limit. Invite friends through Steam, form the party, select Standard, and make sure every member has a legal hero available. For groups of three or more, the January 30 roster rule requires four heroes rather than three.
Street Brawl and bot sessions
Street Brawl is useful when everyone wants a faster 4v4 format. Bot Match supports Standard or Street Brawl against easy, medium, or hard bots, either alone or with friends. Use the difficulty to separate goals: easy bots for controls and movement, medium bots for lane habits, and hard bots for testing whether a build survives sustained pressure.
Private groups
Custom matches support up to 12 players, enough for two full teams. They are the cleanest option for a fixed group that wants to practice a strategy, teach a new player, or avoid matchmaking uncertainty.

These are current eligibility rules, not a promise that the finished game will use the same thresholds. Valve has explicitly said progression systems remain open to significant change before full release. If Ranked is locked, confirm your Standard win count, unlocked-hero count, and the current season notice in the client before assuming there is a bug.
A sensible preparation plan
- Complete the tutorial and several bot games to learn movement, shop use, and Soul collection.
- Practice at least three heroes with different ranges or roles so bans and team composition do not force an unfamiliar kit.
- Play Standard until you understand when to retreat, spend, and join a cross-lane fight.
- Queue solo or with one teammate for Ranked, respecting the current duo limit.
Common beginner problems and fixes
“I cannot access the game.”
Check whether your Steam account received an invitation from a friend who already has Deadlock. There is no listed paid unlock or public registration route. Do not install unofficial launchers or buy accounts.
“I am losing fights despite leading in Souls.”
Inspect whether the Souls are still unspent, whether you entered with low health or ammunition, and whether the opponent’s ability timing countered your item choice. Net worth is potential; an item or upgrade only matters once it is purchased and used correctly.
“The game crashes, stutters, or fails to launch.”
Start with standard PC checks: verify the game files in Steam, update Windows and graphics drivers, disable conflicting overlays, confirm the required DirectX 11 setup, and test again with unnecessary background software closed. If the problem persists, record the exact error, hardware configuration, and whether it occurs at launch or during a match before seeking support. Troubleshooting software may help organize diagnostics, but verify its availability and current compatibility before installing anything.
“My party cannot queue.”
Confirm that a group of three or more has four heroes available for the current roster rule. For Ranked, reduce the party to solo or duo. For a larger fixed group, use Standard, Street Brawl, bot games, or a custom match instead.
What should you expect before full release?
Expect a moving target. Valve’s statement about changing progression and hero or hideout customization means today’s unlock flow, cosmetic systems, or requirements may not survive to launch. The 43-hero figure, Nurse Harrow’s scheduled date, mode rules, bans, party restrictions, and Ranked thresholds should all be checked against the latest patch notes or in-game notices when you return. The durable fundamentals are the loop: control lanes, collect Souls safely, spend them before important fights, coordinate your team, and destroy the enemy base.
