The only confirmed way to access Deadlock right now is a friend invite from someone who already has Deadlock playtest access. Valve’s Steam listing says the game remains in early development, is not publicly available on Steam, and has a release date of “To be announced.”
You do not unlock the playtest with a Steam gift card, a hardware purchase, a third-party code, or a payment to an invite seller. Use the Steam account that should receive the invitation, and install the game only through Steam after the invitation is accepted.

What Deadlock access looks like right now
Deadlock is being distributed as a limited Steam playtest rather than as a normal, publicly downloadable release. Valve describes it as “still in early development stages with lots of temporary art and experimental gameplay.” Its store listing also says that access is “currently limited to friend invites via our playtesters.”
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That wording has three practical consequences:
- You need an existing Deadlock playtester to invite you.
- Finding the game’s Steam page does not, by itself, add the playtest to your account.
- Access is not the same as a final-release entitlement. Valve has not announced a public launch date, a permanent-access promise, or a fixed playtest end date.
The Steam listing currently shows the release date as To be announced. Because the game is unfinished, menus, invitation controls, and eligibility rules can change without notice.

How to get a legitimate Deadlock invite
Follow this sequence rather than looking for a downloadable code. The first two steps reflect Valve’s published friend-invite rule; the delivery details afterward follow the Steam workflow described by community documentation and may use different labels as the client changes.
- Find an existing playtester. The person must already have Deadlock playtest access on their Steam account. Owning other games, being a content creator, or having a high Steam level does not establish that they can invite you.
- Add each other as Steam friends. The friend relationship should be established on the exact Steam account you intend to use. Do not ask the tester to send an invitation to an alternate account and then try to transfer it; Steam entitlements are account-bound.
- Ask the tester to use Deadlock’s invite flow. The tester should open the game or its Steam playtest controls and select the available friend-invite option. A tester may have no available invitation if Valve has paused invites, the tester has used the allowance, or the account is not currently eligible to send one.
- Watch the recipient account. Sign in to Steam with the account you gave your friend. Check Steam notifications and the account’s playtest-invite area, and look for any associated message from Steam. Community guides describe this as the place where a pending invitation is surfaced; Valve’s public store page does not publish a permanent menu path.
- Accept while signed in to the intended account. Confirm that the account name shown in the invitation is yours before accepting. If you use several Steam accounts, close the client session on the others to reduce the chance of accepting on the wrong identity.
- Install through Steam. After acceptance, the playtest should be associated with that Steam account and appear through Steam’s normal library or game-page installation controls. Do not download an executable supplied by a stranger and do not enter credentials into an invite website.
An invitation is not a transferable product. A seller who promises a “guaranteed key,” a borrowed account, or an off-platform activation method is offering something outside Valve’s confirmed process.
Can a friend invite you?
Yes, provided the friend is an active Deadlock playtester and the invite controls are available to that account. Becoming Steam friends is necessary for the published route, but it does not guarantee that an invitation will be sent or accepted immediately.

Why a tester might not be able to invite
- No current allowance: the tester may have already used the invitations made available to them.
- Invites paused: Steam Playtest tools let a developer pause new friend invitations.
- Eligibility controls: a developer can limit invitations to players who joined by a specified date or adjust who can send them.
- Account mismatch: the tester may be trying to invite a different Steam identity from the one you are monitoring.
- Changing test policy: Deadlock is in early development, so Valve can change access without publishing a new public quota.
Ask the tester to verify the recipient’s Steam profile name and to check whether the invite control is enabled. Repeatedly sending friend requests, buying products, or changing your profile will not create an official entitlement.
How many people can a Deadlock tester invite?
Valve has not published a Deadlock-specific number on the game’s Steam page. You should therefore treat claims such as “every tester gets exactly one invite” or “each tester gets three” as unconfirmed unless Valve announces that number for Deadlock.
Steamworks documentation for the generic Steam Playtest system says a developer can configure 1, 2, or 3 invites per player. It also provides controls to pause new friend invites and to restrict the feature to players who joined by a chosen date. Those are platform capabilities, not a confirmed Deadlock allocation. Valve may use different settings, change them over time, or apply additional controls that are not visible on the public store page.

Do you need to spend money on Steam?
Valve’s cited Deadlock listing does not state a minimum Steam purchase, account balance, account age, regional spending threshold, or hardware purchase requirement for receiving an invitation. It also does not promise that spending money will improve your odds.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchSome community discussions claim that “limited” Steam accounts cannot send or receive playtest invitations. That claim is not confirmed by Valve in the published Deadlock listing. Treat it as unverified rather than as a rule. If your account cannot receive an invitation, ask the sender to check the exact error shown by Steam and compare it with current Valve guidance; do not pay to remove a supposed restriction.
A Steam gift card, a game purchase, a gaming mouse, a headset, a PC upgrade, or a guidebook does not grant Deadlock access. These products may be useful for gaming generally, but none is identified by Valve as an access requirement.

Where do you accept the invitation?
Valve confirms that access is mediated through Steam, but its public store page does not document a permanent click-by-click acceptance path. Community instructions describe an invitation area in the recipient’s Steam account together with a notification. Because Steam’s interface can be revised, use the following method instead of relying on a screenshot with old labels:
- Open the Steam client or Steam account associated with the friend request.
- Review the notifications and any section that lists playtest invitations or pending game access.
- Open the Deadlock invitation and check the recipient account identity.
- Accept the invitation from that account, then return to the Deadlock Steam page or library entry.
- Install only when Steam presents the normal installation control for your account.
If nothing appears, have the tester confirm that the invite was sent to your exact profile and that Steam reported a successful send. Check the account’s notifications again after restarting Steam, but do not assume that a missing notification means you should use a third-party activation site. If the tester sees an unavailable or paused invite control, the issue is on the sender’s eligibility side rather than something a purchase can fix.
Is Deadlock free yet?
Deadlock is not publicly available on Steam. The current playtest route does not list an entry fee, but that should not be interpreted as a final pricing decision. Valve has announced neither a release date nor the eventual monetization model in the cited listing.

Official and unofficial access routes compared
| Route | Does the inviter already have Deadlock access? | Steam-account identity | Scam or loss risk | Support from Valve’s published policy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Friend invitation from an existing playtester | Yes; this is the required relationship. | Invitation is tied to the recipient account. | Lowest risk when handled inside Steam. | Confirmed route. |
| Invite seller or “guaranteed key” site | Not established. | May involve an account or code that cannot be transferred. | High risk of fraud, phishing, chargebacks, or revoked access. | Not supported. |
| Buying a Steam gift card or another gaming product | No. | Does not add a Deadlock entitlement. | Money spent without solving access. | Not an access method. |
| Borrowed or purchased Steam account | The seller’s claim cannot be independently verified. | Violates the practical requirement to use your own recipient identity and can trigger account recovery disputes. | High risk of losing both money and access. | Not supported. |
| Random download or activation code | Not established. | Could capture credentials or install malware. | Extremely high. | Not supported. |
Common problems and safe fixes
“My friend says they invited me, but I see nothing”
Confirm that you are checking the same Steam account whose profile the tester selected. Ask the sender whether Steam showed a success or an unavailable-invite message. Review notifications and the playtest-invite area after restarting Steam. If the sender’s controls are paused or exhausted, wait for Valve to reopen or replenish them; creating another account will not bypass a platform-side limit.
“The invite link asks me to log in somewhere else”
Stop. A legitimate invitation should be handled through Steam. Never enter your Steam password, mobile authenticator code, or recovery information into a site that arrived through an unsolicited message. Report the account that sent the link and change your password if you already submitted credentials.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute“Someone wants payment for an invite”
Do not pay. Valve’s published route is a friend invite, not a paid marketplace. A seller cannot guarantee that an invitation allowance exists, that an account is legitimate, or that access will survive a later review.
“A community post says my account is too limited”
That may be a user report, not an official requirement. Valve has not published a minimum spending amount or account-age rule for Deadlock in the cited listing. Ask the tester to capture the exact Steam message and rely on current Valve documentation rather than a blanket claim.
Quick Recap
What to remember before you ask for access
- Use a real Steam friendship with someone who already has Deadlock playtest access.
- Monitor the intended recipient account for the invitation and accept it there.
- Install through Steam, never through a file or login page supplied by a stranger.
- Do not treat generic Steam Playtest settings as Deadlock’s confirmed invite quota.
- There is no published minimum Steam spend, fixed playtest duration, permanent-access guarantee, or public release date.
- Ignore sellers, account offers, gift-card claims, and unofficial codes that promise to unlock the game.
