Deadlock vs. Dota 2: How Valve’s Games Differ

By VGSources Team 9 min read

Deadlock is not simply Dota 2 viewed from behind the hero. Valve presents Deadlock as an unfinished multiplayer experiment combining third-person-shooter and MOBA elements, while Dota 2 is a released, strategy-focused MOBA with more than 100 heroes, flexible roles, and a mature item system. Dota 2 is available to everyone for free; Deadlock has no announced release date and access is currently limited to invitations from playtesters.

Deadlock and Dota 2 at a glance

Question Deadlock Dota 2
What is it? An early-development multiplayer game combining third-person-shooter and MOBA elements. A released strategy MOBA built around heroes, abilities, items, roles, and team competition.
Release status Release date: to be announced. Valve says the game is in early development. Released 9 July 2013.
Can anyone play? No. Valve’s Steam listing says access is limited to friend invites from playtesters, and the game is not yet generally available on Steam. Yes. The Steam listing marks it Free To Play.
Primary viewpoint Third-person, with shooter-style aiming and movement as part of the intended blend. Overhead strategy view associated with a traditional MOBA.
Roster and build structure Still evolving; Valve’s listing does not promise a finalized hero, role, or item framework. More than 100 heroes, multiple roles, and powerful items are central to the published description.
Learning profile Direct aiming may attract shooter players, but unfinished systems make a definitive difficulty ranking premature. Officially tagged “Difficult,” with a broad hero and item ecosystem to learn.
Hardware information Operating-system and processor requirements are not yet specified; other final requirements are not established. Valve publishes requirements for Windows, macOS, and Linux, including 4 GB minimum memory and 60 GB available storage.

This makes the practical choice straightforward: choose Dota 2 if you want a complete game you can download and study today. Choose Deadlock only if you specifically want to explore an invite-only project while its rules, visuals, balance, and technical requirements are still changing.

Availability, release status, and what “early development” means

Deadlock is an invite-limited playtest

Valve’s Steam page describes Deadlock as “a multiplayer game in early development.” It lists the release date as “To be announced,” says the game is not yet available on Steam for unrestricted access, and explains that entry is limited to friend invites through people who are already playtesting it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same listing warns that the build contains temporary art and experimental gameplay. That warning matters when comparing the two games. A mechanic, interface element, character design, performance characteristic, or balance relationship seen in the current build should not be treated as a launch promise. Deadlock’s current presentation is evidence of direction, not a final specification.

Dota 2 is a released free-to-play game

Valve lists Dota 2’s release date as 9 July 2013 and marks it Free To Play. It is therefore the dependable option for a player who wants immediate access, established matchmaking, extensive documentation, and a ruleset that has been developed over many years.

Valve’s store copy also states, “All heroes are free.” That removes a major access barrier for someone deciding whether to learn the roster. It does not make Dota 2 simple; it means the complete hero selection is available without buying individual heroes.

What each game is trying to be

Deadlock: a shooter-MOBA hybrid

Deadlock’s official Steam tags include MOBA, Third-Person Shooter, Hero Shooter, Team-Based, Competitive, PvP, and Early Access. Taken together, those labels describe the intended identity better than the shorthand “Dota in third person.” You should expect the player’s viewpoint and moment-to-moment control to involve a third-person character and shooter-like aiming, while the match still belongs to a team-based competitive game with MOBA ancestry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The tags do not establish a final ruleset. Valve has not published a definitive equivalent to Dota 2’s long-established hero, role, and item documentation on the listing. Do not infer that every familiar Dota mechanic, map relationship, role assignment, or progression system will appear unchanged in Deadlock.

Dota 2: a strategy-first MOBA

Dota 2’s official tags include MOBA, Strategy, Team-Based, Competitive, eSports, PvP, and Difficult. Its store description says players enter battle as one of more than a hundred Dota heroes, combine abilities and items, and fill multiple roles. That emphasis puts strategic planning, information management, team composition, and build decisions at the center of the experience.

  • COMPACT RESEALABLE PACKAGE: store your pack of Windex Gaming Wipes anywhere in your home for whenever a quick and easy wipedown is needed

The distinction is about more than camera angle. Dota 2 asks you to make a large number of strategic choices around a shared battlefield and a broad roster. Deadlock’s published identity adds direct character control and aiming to that team-competitive foundation, but its eventual balance between shooting and MOBA systems remains unsettled.

Camera, controls, and the moment-to-moment experience

Deadlock puts the character between you and the battlefield

In Deadlock, the official third-person-shooter and hero-shooter tags indicate that you will control a visible character from behind and engage with the world through direct movement and aiming. That changes what your hands and attention are doing: positioning the character, managing the camera, and placing shots become part of the immediate task rather than purely issuing overhead commands.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is reasonable to expect this perspective to appeal to players who already enjoy character-action or shooter controls. It is not reasonable to use the current tags to promise particular movement techniques, weapon systems, map layouts, or a finished control scheme. Those details can change while the game is experimental.

Dota 2 keeps the battlefield legible from above

Dota 2’s traditional strategy-MOBA presentation gives you an overhead view of the battle and asks you to coordinate a hero within a larger team plan. The published description focuses on abilities, items, more than 100 heroes, and multiple roles rather than on aiming a weapon through a character-level camera.

That perspective makes the games feel different even when they share team competition and hero-based design. Someone comfortable with shooters may find Deadlock’s input model more familiar, while someone looking for the strategic information density of a conventional MOBA will find Dota 2 the clearer fit.

Heroes, roles, items, and strategic structure

Dota 2 has a documented ecosystem to learn

Dota 2’s roster exceeds 100 heroes according to Valve’s current store description. Each hero brings a particular ability set and can contribute in different ways within a team. Valve also emphasizes flexible roles and powerful items, so learning the game means understanding not only individual heroes but also how abilities, item choices, and team responsibilities interact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Roster breadth: more than 100 heroes create many matchups and team-composition possibilities.
  • Role flexibility: the same broad roster supports different responsibilities within a team rather than a single fixed job for every hero.
  • Item decisions: items add another layer of adaptation beyond a hero’s starting abilities.
  • Long-term study: the size of the ecosystem gives experienced players a large strategic vocabulary, but increases the amount a newcomer must learn.

Deadlock’s structure is not final

Deadlock is clearly being designed around heroes and team competition, but Valve’s current listing does not state a final roster size, definitive role system, completed item economy, or launch rules. Treat any comparison that assigns Deadlock a one-to-one equivalent of Dota 2’s positions or builds as speculation unless Valve later confirms it.

The useful comparison today is therefore structural rather than numerical: Dota 2 offers a known, mature strategy ecosystem; Deadlock offers an evolving experiment that may combine shooter execution with MOBA-style planning in a different proportion.

Which game is harder?

There is no fair single ranking while Deadlock is unfinished. Dota 2 is officially tagged “Difficult,” and its large roster, item system, flexible roles, and competitive depth create a substantial learning burden. A new player must learn the controls and also build an understanding of heroes, abilities, items, and team decisions.

Deadlock may feel more approachable to a player who already understands third-person shooters because aiming and direct movement are familiar forms of input. That does not prove it will be easier overall. An evolving game can be difficult for a different reason: systems, interfaces, balance, and optimal strategies may change before release, so guides and habits can become outdated.

A practical way to think about difficulty is to separate execution from knowledge. Deadlock’s intended shooter component may make execution more immediately recognizable to shooter players. Dota 2’s established strategy layer demands a large amount of accumulated game knowledge. Until Deadlock’s systems stabilize, neither game can be assigned a definitive overall difficulty advantage.

Competition, maturity, and reliability

Dota 2 offers a known competitive foundation

Dota 2 is officially tagged Competitive, eSports, PvP, and Difficult. Those labels, together with its 2013 release, indicate a mature competitive game rather than a prototype. Players can approach it as a long-term strategy pursuit, learn from a substantial existing body of explanations, and expect the core identity to remain that of an established MOBA even as updates continue.

Deadlock’s competitive identity is still being tested

Deadlock is also tagged Competitive, Team-Based, and PvP, but the Early Access tag and Valve’s warning about experimental gameplay qualify those labels. They describe the direction of the project, not a guarantee of a finalized competitive ecosystem. Access may remain restricted, and the experience can change as Valve tests systems.

No directly comparable, current player-count or esports-audience figure is established for both games here. Comparing unsourced or incompatible estimates would create a false sense of precision, so the reliable distinction is maturity and availability rather than audience size.

Likewise, the published minimum for Dota 2 is a compatibility baseline, not a promise of a particular frame rate or visual setting.

How to choose between them

Choose Dota 2 if you want a game you can play now

  • You need unrestricted access rather than an invitation.
  • You want a free-to-play release with a published 2013 launch date.
  • You prefer overhead strategic control to direct third-person aiming.
  • You want more than 100 heroes, flexible roles, and an established item ecosystem.
  • You are willing to study a game officially described as difficult.
  • Your computer needs a known baseline, including 4 GB RAM and 60 GB storage on the published minimum listing.

Choose Deadlock only if its experimental status suits you

  • You are specifically interested in a third-person-shooter and MOBA blend.
  • You can obtain an invitation through a current playtester.
  • You accept temporary art, experimental gameplay, and changing systems.
  • You understand that the release date, final rules, and hardware requirements are not yet announced.
  • You want to help explore a developing format rather than enter a finished competitive ecosystem.

Common misconceptions to avoid

“Deadlock is Dota 2 in third person”

That phrase captures shared MOBA DNA but erases the important difference in control emphasis. Valve officially labels Deadlock as a third-person shooter and hero shooter as well as a MOBA. Dota 2 is officially framed as a strategy MOBA. The games may share broad ideas such as heroes, teams, and competitive matches without being interchangeable versions of the same design.

“Deadlock is already free like Dota 2”

Dota 2 is explicitly marked Free To Play, and Valve says all heroes are free. Deadlock’s current listing establishes neither a general release nor a finalized price model. Its present access method is invitation-based playtesting, so do not assume its eventual availability or monetization will match Dota 2.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The current Deadlock build represents the launch game”

Valve expressly warns that the build contains temporary art and experimental gameplay. Current screenshots, systems, and balance should be read as work in progress.

Bottom line for players deciding today

Dota 2 is the complete, accessible choice: a free-to-play game released on 9 July 2013, with more than 100 heroes, flexible roles, items, published PC requirements, and a strategy-first MOBA identity. Deadlock is the exploratory choice: an invite-limited project with no announced release date, combining third-person-shooter controls with MOBA and hero-shooter ideas while its art and gameplay remain experimental.

If your priority is playing a stable game and building long-term strategic knowledge, start with Dota 2. If your priority is seeing how Valve experiments with a shooter-driven competitive format and you can accept unfinished systems, Deadlock is the one to watch or enter through an invitation.
