Choose Deadlock if you want shooter combat built around lanes, resource gathering, item purchases and coordinated objectives. Choose Overwatch—the name used in Blizzard’s 2026 materials and current Steam listing, though many players still know it as Overwatch 2—if you want a free-to-play team hero game with established match formats and modes. Overwatch is the more immediately accessible option in the sources reviewed; neither game is a universal winner.

How Deadlock and Overwatch differ

What you want Better fit Why
Shooter combat shaped by lanes and an in-match economy Deadlock Players earn souls, buy items, progress heroes and contest objectives as they push through lanes. Deadlock mechanics

What a Deadlock match asks of you

Manage lanes, resources and pressure

Deadlock is not simply a hero shooter with guns. Troopers advance along lanes toward enemy defenses, while players collect souls that fund purchases and hero progression. Flying soul orbs can be collected and contested, and item choices let you prepare for the next fight. The documented Deadlock mechanics

Turn map objectives into a push

Players also need to coordinate positioning and objective timing as they advance toward the enemy Patron; destroying it ends the match. If the appeal of a shooter includes weighing map pressure and spending earned resources to strengthen your next engagement, Deadlock’s structure may suit you. That is a fit based on its described mechanics, not a claim that it is objectively harder or better.

What to expect from Overwatch

Team battles with several formats

Blizzard’s current Steam listing describes Overwatch as a free-to-play team action game with 5v5 or 6v6 battles, online player-versus-player and co-op play, and cross-platform multiplayer. A Battle.net account is required. The listing makes Overwatch the simpler starting point if you want to install a team hero game from a public storefront and play, provided the account and platform requirements work for you. Modes and builds continue to evolve

Blizzard also announced five new heroes for Season 1: Domina, Emre, Mizuki, Anran and Jetpack Cat. These are dated live-game details, not a guarantee that every feature or season description will remain current; consult Blizzard’s current listing for what is available when you play. Access and development status matter

In a September 30, 2026 report about Valve’s “Deadlock – City Never Sleeps” development update, PC Gamer described Deadlock as invite-only and still in development. Valve’s update, as quoted in that report, explains that early player access is intended to help the company shape a multiplayer game and learn what is fun. The report did not signal an imminent public release, so treat access as changeable and verify it on Deadlock’s current Steam page or Valve update before making plans.
