Steam lists it as Steam Deck Verified, meaning the compatibility check found successful SteamOS operation, a usable default controller layout, legible interface text, and good behavior with the default graphics configuration. You are not required to use a television or monitor: the Deck can run the game on its own screen. A larger display is an optional way to play, not a prerequisite.
Verified is a strong out-of-the-box compatibility signal, but it is not a promise of one frame rate in every location. A 2026 PC Gamer report, made after patch 1.2 on a Steam Deck OLED with the Portable preset, observed roughly 30–35 frames per second during ordinary open-world play and about 50 fps in minimal interiors. Those figures describe that reviewer’s device, game build, settings, and test run—not a universal guarantee.

What “Steam Deck Verified” means for Death Stranding 2
Steam Deck Verified is Valve’s positive compatibility designation. For this game, the recorded checks cover the parts of the experience that matter most on a handheld:
- The game runs successfully on SteamOS.
- The default controller configuration works without requiring an immediate remapping session.
- Interface text is legible on the Deck’s built-in display.
- The default graphics configuration performs well enough for the Verified assessment.
That status answers the basic compatibility question: you can install and play the PC version on a Deck rather than relying on streaming to another computer or using a separate Windows machine. It does not define a fixed 30, 40, or 60 fps target, nor does it eliminate the possibility of a performance dip in a demanding scene. Steam’s compatibility note does not publish a frame-rate number.

How the handheld version performs
The best available frame-rate reference
The most concrete post-launch performance observation in the available reporting comes from PC Gamer in 2026. After patch 1.2, a reviewer using a Steam Deck OLED and the game’s Portable preset reported approximately 30–35 fps during moment-to-moment travel and activity in the open world. In sparse, minimal interiors, the same report saw roughly 50 fps.
The gap between those observations is important. Death Stranding 2 does not place the same load on the Deck in every environment. Traversing a busy outdoor area, rendering distant terrain, handling weather, and processing activity can produce a different result from standing in a relatively simple interior. Treat the figures as a realistic example of scene variation, not as a performance range that every Deck model, operating-system build, or future patch must reproduce.
Use the Portable preset first
The official PC announcement adds a Portable preset specifically for handheld devices. Starting there gives you the configuration intended for a small-screen, battery-powered system instead of making you translate desktop settings by trial and error. The announcement also identifies support for Steam Input, Xbox controllers, and PlayStation controllers, so you have options if you prefer a different gamepad from the Deck’s built-in controls.
Because the title is Verified, the sensible order is to launch with the supplied defaults, play through several kinds of locations, and only then adjust settings if you have a personal preference. Lowering a setting can help a difficult scene, but changing everything before you establish a baseline makes it harder to tell whether a patch or a configuration change caused a difference.

Is a television or monitor required?
No. The Deck is a handheld PC with its own display and controls, and the Verified assessment specifically includes legible text and a working default control layout. Those points support local play directly on the device. You can pick up the Deck and play without connecting it to a television.
An external display is still useful if you want a larger image for a fixed-location session, but it changes the viewing arrangement rather than the game’s basic compatibility. The game remains installed and processed by the Deck; the screen choice is yours.
| Play option | What it changes | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Deck screen | Portable, self-contained play using the built-in display and controls | Verified status covers SteamOS operation, default controls, legible text, and the default graphics configuration |
| Deck connected to a larger screen | Viewing size and seating position | A larger display is optional; no external screen is stated as a requirement |
| Windows gaming PC | Uses the PC release against its listed Windows hardware specifications | The published PC requirements are separate from Deck performance evidence |
Storage: the 150 GB requirement and what it does not mean
The Steam store listing specifies 150 GB of available storage and says an SSD is required. Plan around that figure before starting the download. “Available” means space that is free for the installation; it is not the total capacity printed on your Deck’s drive.
The listing does not establish that every Deck owner must purchase a separate SSD or memory card. The practical question is whether the storage location you intend to use has enough qualifying free space. If it does not, you will need to free space or choose a compatible storage solution, but the evidence does not justify calling an add-on universally necessary.
- Open your Deck’s storage view and check the free space on the location where Steam will install the game.
- Compare that free space with the listing’s 150 GB requirement, leaving additional room for your operating system, shader data, updates, and other games.
- If space is short, remove or move games you no longer need, then check the free-space figure again before beginning the installation.
- After installation, keep enough room for updates; a drive that barely meets the initial number can become inconvenient when a large patch arrives.
The 150 GB and SSD statements come from the game’s PC listing. They should not be confused with a claim that every Deck model has the same usable capacity or that a particular accessory is mandatory.
How the listed PC requirements relate to Steam Deck
The store page also lists conventional Windows PC requirements. These describe the Windows release and are not a replacement for the game-specific Deck verification record.

Do not read the table as a demand that a Deck owner match those desktop parts. Steam Deck uses SteamOS, and Valve explains that Proton allows many Windows games to run on that operating system. In this case, the game’s own Verified result is more direct evidence than trying to infer Deck behavior by comparing its hardware with a Windows minimum specification.
Recommended setup procedure
1. Confirm the current compatibility label
Open the game’s Steam store page on the Deck or in the Steam client and look for the current Steam Deck Verified status. The recorded check is dated 22 April 2026, but labels and compatibility notes can change after updates.
2. Prepare storage before downloading
Check for at least the listed 150 GB of available space on the intended SSD-backed installation location. Do not begin with a drive that has only a few gigabytes beyond the requirement if you expect to install updates immediately.
3. Install the latest game and system updates
Allow Steam to finish the game update and let the Deck apply any pending SteamOS updates before judging performance. This keeps your result closer to the software versions used by current compatibility checks and reporting.

4. Start with the Portable preset
Select the Portable preset described in the official PC announcement. It is the game’s handheld-oriented starting point and avoids unnecessary desktop-focused tuning on the first launch.
5. Test more than one type of location
Play in an open-world area as well as an interior before deciding whether the performance suits you. The reported 30–35 fps outdoor result and approximately 50 fps interior result show why a single room or short opening sequence cannot represent the entire game.
6. Choose your screen and controller
Use the Deck’s own display and controls for a fully handheld session. If you prefer a larger screen, connect one as an optional viewing choice. Steam Input, Xbox controllers, and PlayStation controllers are supported according to the official announcement.

“It runs, but outdoor scenes feel slower.”
That experience is consistent with the scene variation reported by PC Gamer. First confirm that the Portable preset is active and that the game and SteamOS are current. If you still want more headroom, change one graphics option at a time and retest in the same kind of outdoor area. Avoid treating the interior figure as a target that outdoor play must match.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“The game says there is not enough space.”
Recheck the free-space number rather than the drive’s advertised capacity. The listing calls for 150 GB available and an SSD. Remove or move other installations, then restart the install after Steam reports enough room. Keep extra capacity for later updates.

“Text or controls are not comfortable.”
The Verified record says the default presentation has legible text and a working default controller configuration. Make sure you have not replaced the default layout with an incomplete custom profile. You can also use a supported Xbox or PlayStation controller through Steam Input if its shape suits you better.
“I expected a fixed frame-rate guarantee because the game is Verified.”
Verified does not publish a universal frame-rate target. The dated PC Gamer observations are useful context, but they are one reviewer’s results on one Deck OLED, one preset, and one patched build. Performance can differ by model, software version, location, and future updates.
Who should choose Deck play versus a big-screen setup?
Choose Deck-first play if your priority is portability, local play without a television, and a supported default configuration. The game’s Verified status and Portable preset address those needs directly.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose a larger-screen arrangement if your priority is viewing scale or a fixed-seat gaming setup. That is a display preference, not a compatibility requirement, and it does not change the fact that the Deck can run the game on its own.
| Your priority | Most suitable choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Play while travelling or away from a television | Deck screen | The game is Verified and includes a handheld-oriented preset |
| Largest possible picture at home | Deck with an optional external display | The larger screen changes presentation, not the basic requirement to run the game |
| Predictable desktop-style hardware tuning | Windows PC meeting the listed specification | The store provides separate minimum and recommended Windows specifications |
| Minimal setup work | Deck with default controls and Portable preset | Those are covered by the compatibility assessment and official handheld guidance |
Verdict
DEATH STRANDING 2: ON THE BEACH is a legitimate Steam Deck game, not a title that leaves you stuck in front of a big screen. Its Verified listing confirms the essential SteamOS, controls, text, and default-configuration checks, while the Portable preset gives handheld players an intended starting point. Expect performance to vary by scene rather than assuming a guaranteed frame rate, and make sure the installation location can provide the listed 150 GB of SSD storage. Connect a larger display only if you want one.
