Death Stranding beginner’s guide: plan routes, build structures, and deliver cargo safely

The safest way to play Death Stranding is to plan around terrain and cargo condition, not the shortest line on the map. Read every order requirement, tilt the map to see slopes, mark a chain of waypoints, and choose gentler ground when a longer route reduces climbing, falls, or battery drain. Keep the cargo indicator white, carry the tools your route needs, and treat ladders, generators, roads, ziplines, and other players’ structures as parts of a logistics network. This guide explains that process from your first delivery through mountain routes, BT territory, MULE camps, and vehicle travel.

Start with the order, not the destination marker

Before leaving a terminal, open the order details and identify four things: the destination, the cargo type, the delivery conditions, and any time requirement. The objective marker tells you where to go, but the order screen tells you what can make the trip fail. A fragile or tall shipment needs a different plan from a stack of ordinary containers, and a timed order may justify a vehicle or a faster structure-supported route.

Read the terrain in three dimensions

Open the map and tilt it rather than relying only on the overhead view. Slopes, cliffs, and bowls that look like a short walk from above can become exhausting climbs or dangerous descents on the ground. Place several route markers in sequence: one for the first ridge or valley, another for a facility or safe crossing, and another for the final approach. A chain of waypoints is easier to adjust than one straight line.

When two routes are available, compare terrain difficulty with distance. A longer path over moderate ground is often faster in practice than a direct climb that empties stamina, forces repeated balancing, or damages containers in a fall. You are not being rewarded for crossing every mountain face; you are being rewarded for delivering the shipment in good condition.

Use facilities as planned checkpoints

Distribution centers and other known facilities are useful rest, resupply, and recovery points on long journeys. Add one to the route when it divides an otherwise difficult trip into manageable sections. A checkpoint also gives you a place to reassess cargo, recover stamina, fabricate equipment, and change your plan before committing to the next stretch.

Inspect the shared map before departure

Inside Chiral Network coverage, other porters’ ladders, bridges, roads, paths, postboxes, share lockers, vehicles, and generators may appear. Follow useful footpaths and check whether a structure actually lines up with your intended crossing. Online construction is an aid rather than a guarantee: you still have to account for terrain, battery charge, cargo height, and the condition of the shipment. Like structures that save you time, and contribute materials when you can; your own useful construction can help other players as well.

A reliable route-planning workflow

  1. Read the order. Confirm destination, cargo type, delivery conditions, and time requirement.
  2. Tilt the map. Inspect steepness and identify cliffs, deep water, and terrain that will force a long climb.
  3. Mark waypoints. Build a sequence around gentler slopes, crossings, and facilities instead of drawing one straight line.
  4. Add a rest point. Use a distribution center or another known safe facility to break up a long delivery.
  5. Check structures. Look for ladders, bridges, roads, ziplines, generators, postboxes, and share lockers in Chiral Network coverage.
  6. Pack for the obstacles. Carry a ladder or climbing anchor for likely vertical sections and Container Repair Spray if Timefall is possible.
  7. Re-scan while moving. Use the Odradek to read slopes and water, and revise the route when the ground is worse than it looked on the map.
  8. Choose safety over pride. Slow down, use both hands to steady Sam, and walk when a vehicle would be harder to control.

Balance and protect every load

Kojima Productions’ beginner guidance puts the priority plainly: “The most important thing is to deliver your package without damaging it.” The cargo indicator shows whether your planned load is manageable. White means the arrangement is within a comfortable range; yellow signals strain and reduced movement; red means the load exceeds Sam’s maximum and greatly harms mobility. Reduce or redistribute cargo before setting out when the indicator is red, and treat yellow as a warning that the route will be harder than it appears.

Arrange cargo around Sam’s center of gravity

Use Auto-Arrange Cargo to place containers in a more efficient position, then inspect the result yourself. Keep heavy items close to Sam’s center of gravity. Tall stacks and poorly arranged loads can catch on the environment, make sharp turns more difficult, expose you to MULE detection, and increase the chance of a tumble. Cargo that is balanced but too tall can still be a poor choice for a narrow pass or a stealth approach.

Special packages can have orientation rules. Pizza and other unusual orders may need to remain flat or face a particular direction, so read the package instruction instead of automatically accepting the arrangement suggested for ordinary containers. If an orientation requirement conflicts with the most compact stack, follow the order’s instruction and plan a route that avoids falls.

Use the right carrying aid

Floaters and power skeletons expand what Sam can carry and reduce the burden of difficult terrain. Vehicles support larger loads when the ground and battery supply make them practical. These aids do not remove the need to balance the load: a heavy or tall arrangement can still be awkward even when a device increases capacity.

Prevent Timefall and impact damage

Timefall ages objects it touches. It first degrades a container rather than instantly destroying what is inside, but severe container damage can eventually affect the contents. Falls and hard impacts can also damage cargo. Because delivery evaluation is primarily affected by cargo condition, avoiding damage is more important than shaving a few minutes from a route.

Carry repair supplies when weather can change

Take Container Repair Spray whenever the route may enter Timefall. After a weather section or a BT encounter, inspect the cargo screen and repair containers before continuing if their condition has fallen. Repairing early prevents a small loss of protection from becoming a failed delivery after another fall.

Control descents and crossings

Do not sprint down an unfamiliar slope with a tall load. Slow your movement, use both hands to steady Sam, and choose a ladder or climbing anchor when a descent is too steep to manage safely. In waist-deep water, steadying controls help maintain balance, but depleted stamina makes every correction harder. A short detour to shallow water is preferable to gambling the shipment on a deep crossing.

Pack equipment for the route you actually chose

Obstacle or goal Useful equipment or structure How it helps
Short cliff or awkward vertical section Ladder Bridges a short vertical or uneven section without forcing a climb.
Rocky drop or steep face Climbing anchor Provides a safer line across difficult rock and steep terrain.
Large carrying burden Power skeleton or floater Increases carrying options and reduces the burden of complex ground.
Timefall exposure Container Repair Spray Restores container condition after weather or other damage.
Battery-powered vehicle or equipment Generator Recharges the battery when placed within its charging radius.
Repeated crossing between connected areas Bridge or road Turns a hazardous crossing into a faster, safer route after materials and Chiral bandwidth are available.
Mountain network later in the game Zipline Links elevated points and is particularly useful where trucks struggle in rough mountains.

Do not fill every equipment slot just because it is available. A ladder and repair spray are valuable on a wet, rocky route; they add weight on a short facility-to-facility trip with an existing bridge. Match your kit to the map markers, weather, and cargo requirements you identified before departure.

Move safely: scan, manage stamina, and respect water

The Odradek is your route-safety instrument. Use it to identify safe ground and deep water before committing Sam and the cargo. Re-scan after a turn, at the edge of a ravine, and before entering a river. The map is a plan; the Odradek is the check that the plan still matches the ground in front of you.

Protect stamina before it reaches zero

Depleted stamina weakens balance. Drink from the canteen and rest when the stamina bar has been drained by climbing, wading, or carrying an overloaded arrangement. On steep climbs and in waist-deep water, use L2 and R2 to steady Sam and regain control. Continuing while exhausted turns a recoverable stumble into a dropped load or a fall.

Decide when walking beats driving

A vehicle is not automatically the faster option. Rough ground can make a trike difficult to steer, and rivers can drain its battery. Deep red Odradek water markers indicate water that can sink the bike and wash away Sam and cargo. If a route contains broken rock, severe slopes, or a risky river crossing, leave the vehicle and walk the difficult section rather than forcing it through.

Build structures that remove repeated problems

Construction is most valuable when it solves an obstacle you will face again. A ladder is a quick answer to one cliff; a road, bridge, or connected zipline network can change every later delivery through the same region. Construction consumes materials and Chiral bandwidth, so build where the time and safety benefit will recur.

Ladders and climbing anchors

Place a ladder across a short vertical or awkward section that repeatedly interrupts your route. Use a climbing anchor for a rocky drop or steep face where a ladder would not provide a stable line. Check the approach and landing before placing either item; the useful end of a structure must meet walkable ground, not another obstacle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bridges and roads

Bridges turn repeated crossings into predictable travel, while roads create faster, safer corridors once enough materials and Chiral bandwidth are available. Prioritize crossings that force frequent detours or expose cargo to falls. A road is a long-term investment; do not spend scarce materials on a segment you are unlikely to use again.

Generators

Generators recharge a Reverse Trike and other battery-powered equipment. To charge successfully, place the generator within its charging radius, then bring the vehicle or equipment into that radius. Put generators before a battery-critical stretch, not after the vehicle has already stopped in the middle of a river valley.

Ziplines

Ziplines become especially useful for mountain networks in the middle portion of the game. Community guidance from 505 Games notes that they are easier to use than trucks in rough mountains. Their value increases when several points are linked: one isolated zipline is a shortcut, while a connected network can move Sam and cargo across terrain that would otherwise require repeated climbs.

Postboxes and share lockers

Use postboxes and share lockers when the current load is too large or a delivery route needs to be split. Stash cargo, travel with more capacity or a vehicle, and retrieve the shipment later. This is safer than carrying an overloaded stack through a dangerous section simply because all items must move in one trip.

Use the shared world without surrendering your judgment

Structures from other porters can appear in Chiral Network coverage, including ladders, bridges, roads, paths, postboxes, vehicles, and generators. A placed ladder may save equipment weight; a road may remove a hazardous crossing; a generator may rescue a low-battery vehicle. Like useful structures so they remain visible and contribute materials to projects that improve routes you genuinely use.

Shared infrastructure does not guarantee a safe delivery. A bridge can end before the steepest slope, a generator can be outside the vehicle’s approach, and a road cannot protect cargo from careless turns at its edge. Check the actual terrain and your cargo condition at every transition.

Survive BT territory with patience

Early BT areas reward avoidance rather than confrontation. When Timefall begins and the Odradek indicates BT activity, stop long enough to read its direction and movement. Hold your breath and move slowly through the area. Rushing increases the chance of detection, a fall, and container damage at the same time.

Prepare before entering

  • Keep the cargo balanced and the indicator as close to white as possible.
  • Carry Container Repair Spray if Timefall is expected.
  • Leave enough stamina for a slow retreat and a climb out of the zone.
  • Know where the route exits before stepping into the densest part of the weather.

Fight only when your equipment supports it

Hematic grenades can fight BTs later, but they consume Sam’s blood. Blood Bags help support repeated encounters. Combat is a tool for situations where avoidance is no longer practical, not a reason to enter every BT field with a heavy load and no recovery plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect cargo after the encounter

Once you are beyond the BT or Timefall section, check the cargo screen. Repair containers before another hazard compounds the damage, and confirm that no package was lost or knocked out of position during the escape.

Handle MULE territory as a stealth problem first

MULE sensor poles reveal cargo locations. If a scan catches you, leave the detection area quickly, break line of sight, or hide in tall grass. Watchtowers help locate camps before you walk into their patrol pattern. The Bola Gun can bind an immediate threat when you need a short opening to escape or retrieve a shipment.

If you raid a camp for supplies, leave delivery cargo behind first. PlayStation’s guidance recommends creating room for recovered goods rather than entering a camp with every package on your back. Secure the delivery in a postbox, share locker, or another safe location, then return when you have capacity for the supplies you actually want.

Plan the exit before taking anything. A successful camp approach that ends with an overloaded, exposed retreat can still damage the order. Tall cargo also makes stealth and sharp turns harder, so reduce the load or split it before crossing a sensor line.

Use the Reverse Trike without destroying the route

The Reverse Trike found near the Distribution Center west of Capital Knot City provides an early vehicle option. To charge it, fabricate a PCC, select Generator, and build the generator within charging range of the trike. Bring the bike into that radius to restore its battery.

Watch battery and water together

Rivers can drain the trike’s battery, turning a crossing into a stranded-vehicle problem. Deep red Odradek markers identify water that can sink the bike and wash away Sam and cargo. Scan before entering and use a bridge, a shallower crossing, or a walking detour when the water is unsafe.

Carry only where the ground supports it

The trike is excellent on suitable surfaces and poor on rough terrain. If the front wheel repeatedly catches on rock or the slope forces constant corrections, dismount and walk. A slower walk that preserves the container is a successful delivery; a faster ride that tumbles the load is not.

Choose route strategies by the trade-off you face

Decision Prefer this when Main risk to manage
Longer gentle route The direct line contains steep climbs, cliffs, or repeated falls. Extra distance and stamina use.
Short steep route You have the stamina, climbing equipment, and a stable cargo arrangement. Balance loss, falls, and container damage.
Walking Ground is rocky, steep, or crossed by dangerous water. Slower travel and greater exposure time.
Reverse Trike The route has suitable ground and a generator or other charging plan. Battery drain, loss of control, and sinking in deep water.
Shared structures A bridge, road, generator, or zipline directly solves a repeated obstacle. Incomplete networks, terrain transitions, and limited bandwidth.
Early BT avoidance You lack reliable combat supplies or carry fragile cargo. Slower movement while holding breath.
Later BT combat Hematic grenades and Blood Bags support an unavoidable encounter. Blood consumption and additional cargo-management demands.

A practical checklist before every delivery

  • Order: destination, cargo type, delivery conditions, and time requirement are understood.
  • Route: the map is tilted, slopes are inspected, and several waypoints are marked.
  • Checkpoint: a distribution center or safe facility is identified for a long trip.
  • Load: the cargo indicator is white when possible, heavy items sit near Sam’s center, and special orientation rules are followed.
  • Tools: ladder or climbing anchor matches the route; repair spray is packed if Timefall is possible.
  • Threats: BT and MULE areas are identified, with an exit plan for each.
  • Vehicle: battery, charging radius, water crossings, and rough ground have been checked.
  • Movement: stamina is preserved, the Odradek is used at uncertain ground, and walking is chosen when driving is unsafe.
