Death Stranding settings to change for better performance, visibility, and immersion

For the best all-round experience, start with Performance Mode on PS5 Director’s Cut, use a frame-rate target your PC can hold consistently, calibrate HDR on both the game and display, and keep haptics or camera effects only when they improve rather than interrupt play. The right setup is a balance: smoother motion can matter more than native resolution, a brighter image is not necessarily more readable, and disabling vibration or blur can make long deliveries more comfortable.

Fast recommendations by platform and priority

Situation PS5 Director’s Cut PC
You value smooth traversal and camera response Performance Mode (scaled 4K, up to 60 FPS) Set a frame-rate limit your hardware can sustain; use upscaling if it prevents frame-time spikes
You sit close to a large 4K display and prioritize fine detail Fidelity Mode (native 4K) Raise resolution or quality settings only after establishing a stable frame rate
Dark terrain or interiors are hard to read Calibrate HDR with the game’s test image and the display’s HDR controls; do not raise brightness until blacks turn gray
Motion causes blur, nausea, or eye strain Reduce motion blur or equivalent camera effects if your version provides them; lower camera movement where possible
You want maximum tactile feedback Enable DualSense haptics, adaptive triggers, vibration, and compatible 3D Audio Enable supported controller feedback and spatial audio, then disable vibration if it causes stutter

These are starting points, not universal benchmark results. Display size, viewing distance, hardware, resolution, patches, and the specific release all change what looks and feels best.

PS5 Director’s Cut: choose the right picture mode

Performance Mode for consistent motion

The PlayStation Store describes Performance Mode as scaled 4K with up to 60 FPS. It is the sensible default when camera movement, climbing, driving, and combat feel better with steadier motion. “Up to” is important: it is a mode target, not a promise that every scene remains at 60 FPS under every condition. Choose it when responsiveness and motion clarity matter more than maximum pixel detail.

To select it, pause the game and open the display or graphics section of Options. Menu wording can differ by build, so look for the screen-mode choice that names Performance and Fidelity. Test the selection during ordinary play from your normal seating distance; a paused close-up exaggerates resolution differences that may be hard to see while moving.

Fidelity Mode for native 4K detail

Fidelity Mode is listed as native 4K. It is the sharper choice for players who examine distant terrain, cargo detail, and environmental texture from a fixed viewing position. Native resolution does not automatically make the game feel clearer during a pan, however. If motion consistency is your priority, Fidelity may be less suitable even when its still images look cleaner.

Switch between the two modes in the same menu and walk through a familiar route with cargo on your back. Compare the way edges remain legible while turning, not just the sharpness of a stationary sign. Keep the mode that makes the information you actually track—terrain edges, obstacles, and nearby threats—easiest to follow.

HDR on PS5

HDR is supported in the Director’s Cut. It only helps when the television is receiving and displaying a correctly configured HDR signal. In the game’s HDR calibration screen, adjust the reference image first, then use the television’s HDR controls if the result is still too dim or too bright. Stop increasing brightness before black areas become gray; lifted blacks reduce contrast and can make the image look flatter rather than more visible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your display switches incorrectly between HDR and SDR, compare the game in SDR instead of judging HDR brightness from a misconfigured signal. Use the console’s display settings and the television’s HDR picture mode together, and recalibrate after changing either one.

PC: build a stable frame-time baseline

Set a sustainable frame-rate target

The PC release provides customized graphics options and uncapped frame rates. Start by deciding what your system can hold in the busiest section you regularly play, not what it reports in an empty area. A consistent lower target usually feels better than a high number that repeatedly falls and produces uneven camera movement.

  1. Open the game’s graphics or display menu and select your monitor’s native resolution as a baseline.
  2. Choose a frame-rate cap your system can maintain during traversal, storms, and populated scenes. If the game offers an in-game limiter, use it; otherwise use the display driver or operating-system limiter.
  3. Play for several minutes in a demanding route and watch for hitching or obvious frame-time spikes. Do not change several quality settings at once.

No independent universal FPS figure is established for this game. Hardware, resolution, drivers, and patches differ, so a published number from one PC would not be a reliable target for all players.

A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.

Use upscaling before sacrificing every quality setting

Official PC feature information documents DLSS, FSR, XeSS, other upscaling controls, and frame-generation technologies. Select the upscaler supported by your GPU, then compare its image at the same frame-rate target. Upscaling can recover performance while retaining more geometry and texture detail than lowering every option to its minimum.

Check thin terrain lines, cargo edges, signs, and foliage while moving. If the image becomes visibly soft, move to a higher quality preset or a less aggressive upscaling mode before lowering additional settings. Frame generation can increase displayed smoothness, but it does not remove the underlying rendering work; keep a stable base frame rate and acceptable input response first.

Lower demanding options in stages

When the target is still unstable, reduce the settings that create the largest frame-time spikes one step at a time. After each change, repeat the same route and inspect terrain readability. Keep the highest settings that do not cause distracting stutter. This approach avoids trading away detail that had little effect on performance while leaving the real bottleneck untouched.

Controller-related stutter

505 Games advises testing with vibration disabled when a controller produces performance problems. If stutter appears during story sequences or other controller-heavy moments:

  1. Pause and open the controller or input options.
  2. Turn vibration off, then repeat the section where the problem occurred.
  3. If performance returns to normal, leave vibration disabled for that session or test a different connection method and controller before re-enabling it.

This is a troubleshooting measure, not a statement that vibration is always harmful. If disabling it changes nothing, restore the setting you prefer and continue investigating other frame-time causes.

Make dark terrain and interface elements easier to read

Calibrate HDR and brightness as a pair

Use the game’s own calibration image rather than a random screenshot. Set the display to its HDR mode, follow the in-game instruction, and adjust until highlights are visible without clipping and dark references remain distinguishable. Raising the slider until every shadow is bright usually produces gray blacks and a washed-out image. Lowering it too far hides rocks, cargo outlines, and path edges.

After calibration, view a normal route from your usual distance. A setting that looks dramatic when you sit inches from a paused menu may obscure information during play. Recheck calibration after changing the television’s HDR preset, console output range, monitor mode, or room lighting.

Keep text readable before removing the HUD

If your version includes text-size, contrast, subtitle-background, or interface-opacity controls, adjust those before hiding interface elements. Increase subtitle size or contrast when dialogue is difficult to follow, and use a background or outline when text crosses bright snow or sky. Exact labels and availability vary between the original release, Director’s Cut, and PC builds; use the closest equivalent in your Accessibility, Interface, or Display menu.

Removing the HUD can increase immersion, but it also removes navigation and status information. Disable individual elements only after confirming that you can still read cargo condition, stamina, and route hazards when you need them.

Reduce blur and camera effects when movement feels smeared

Motion blur and similar camera effects can make pans look smoother to some players and uncomfortable to others. If movement appears smeared or causes eye strain, lower or disable the motion-blur option if your build provides it. Some releases use a different label or combine several effects under a camera setting, so choose the nearest equivalent rather than assuming every version has an identical toggle.

Choose a useful field of view

If a field-of-view slider is available, adjust it while walking, carrying cargo, and looking toward the ground. A wider view shows more peripheral terrain but can make Sam and distant objects smaller; a narrower view enlarges the center of the image but may hide nearby threats at the edges. Choose the value that keeps Sam, cargo, terrain boundaries, and approaching hazards easy to track on your display. Wider is not automatically clearer, especially on a small or distant screen.

Immersion settings that remain comfortable

Haptics, adaptive triggers, and vibration

The PS5 listing confirms DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive-trigger resistance, and also confirms that these effects can be disabled. Keep them enabled when footsteps, weather, cargo movement, and trigger resistance add useful information. Reduce trigger resistance or vibration when long sessions cause hand fatigue, when the controller is noisy, or when tactile pulses distract from visual cues.

On PC, behavior depends on the supported platform, game build, and connection method. A wired connection, wireless connection, or third-party pad may not expose identical effects. Treat haptics as optional immersion—not a requirement for completing deliveries—and use the controller menu to find the least intrusive level.

3D Audio and environmental sound

The PS5 version supports 3D Audio through compatible stereo headphones. Keep 3D Audio and environmental sound enabled when they improve your sense of direction: weather, footsteps, nearby movement, and machinery can become easier to place. If the mix sounds hollow or fatiguing, compare the game’s 3D option with your headphones’ own spatial-processing mode; stacking two virtual-surround systems can make positioning less clear.

Camera movement and long-session comfort

Lower camera movement, shake, or similar effects when they cause nausea or fatigue, if your version exposes those controls. Combine that change with reduced motion blur and a comfortable viewing distance. Comfort is part of immersion: a dramatic effect that forces you to stop playing is less useful than a restrained presentation you can sustain for an entire delivery.

A practical tuning sequence

Use this order so each change has a clear purpose:

  1. Select Performance Mode on PS5 when smooth motion is your priority, or establish a sustainable capped frame rate on PC.
  2. Set HDR correctly on the display and in the game; use SDR for comparison if the HDR signal is not being handled properly.
  3. On PC, enable an appropriate upscaler and test image clarity before reducing multiple quality options.
  4. Walk a demanding route and adjust only one graphics or camera setting at a time.
  5. Increase subtitle or interface readability before hiding HUD elements.
  6. Enable haptics, adaptive triggers, vibration, and 3D Audio, then remove the individual effect that causes discomfort or distraction.
  7. If PC stutter follows controller input, disable vibration and retest the same scene.

What to change for common problems

Symptom First change What to check next
Camera motion feels uneven Use PS5 Performance Mode or lower the PC frame-rate target to a stable value Reduce demanding PC settings in stages and check for frame-time spikes
Image is sharp when paused but hard to follow while moving Compare Performance Mode with Fidelity, or use a less aggressive PC upscaler Test from normal play distance and inspect terrain edges during a turn
Shadows are unreadable Run HDR calibration again Confirm the display is in HDR mode and avoid lifting blacks until they are gray
Text disappears into the scenery Increase subtitle size, contrast, or background if available Keep only the HUD elements you need instead of hiding the entire interface
Movement looks smeared Reduce motion blur or the closest camera-effect setting Try a different field of view and viewing distance
Controller causes PC stutter Disable vibration and repeat the affected sequence Test another connection method or controller if the issue remains
Feedback causes fatigue or nausea Lower vibration, trigger resistance, camera movement, or blur individually Keep environmental audio and only the tactile effects that remain comfortable

Version and display caveats

The original release, Director’s Cut, and PC edition do not necessarily expose an identical menu inventory. Motion-blur, field-of-view, subtitle, contrast, and accessibility controls may be absent or use different names. Open the closest Display, Graphics, Interface, Accessibility, or Controller menu in your build rather than following a label that is not present.

For platform-specific capabilities, consult the PlayStation Store listing for DEATH STRANDING DIRECTOR’S CUT, the 505 Games PC FAQ, and the official Steam announcements. These pages document the supported PS5 modes, HDR and controller features, and PC graphics technologies; they do not turn any single setting into a guaranteed result on every display or computer.
