Death’s Gambit: Afterlife is a challenging 2D action RPG built around Souls-like combat and Metroidvania exploration. Its expanded edition brings a large set of new areas and weapons, but its appeal depends on whether you enjoy punishing fights and can tolerate an occasionally unclear introduction. Players who like learning boss patterns, exploring interconnected levels and shaping a character build are the best fit; anyone seeking forgiving combat or carefully explained mechanics may find it frustrating.
What changed in Afterlife?
Afterlife is an expanded edition of the 2018 original, not just a re-release under a new name. The Steam and Nintendo listings say it adds 10 levels, more than 30 weapons and five bosses, alongside mechanical overhauls. Those are publisher-listed features, rather than a platform-by-platform audit of every update.
The store descriptions position the game as a 2D action platformer with deep RPG elements. You play as an agent of Death in Siradon, exploring non-linear areas and confronting undying guardians. The listings also advertise movement upgrades, seven classes, more than 100 talents, crafting, heroic boss rematches, alternate endings and New Game Plus. Steam describes the soundtrack as nearly three hours of music by Kyle Hnedak.
Choices are presented as affecting the conclusion: Serenity Forge’s Steam description says, “Your choices will affect the epic finale to Sorun’s tale.” That is publisher copy, not an independent assessment of how much those decisions change the story.

How does it play, and who will enjoy it?
Combat and difficulty
Combat is the central filter. The game asks you to learn enemy and boss patterns, manage your approach and build around weapons, classes and talents. That can make a difficult encounter satisfying when you enjoy refining a strategy; the same demand can feel punishing if dodging or boss patterns do not click for you. The critic excerpts collected on Metacritic reflect both reactions: one calls the combat crushing for some players, while a Nintenderos excerpt singles out dodging as a weak mechanic. Those are subjective review views, not a universal verdict.
Exploration and builds
The other half of the appeal is exploration. The official listings describe non-linear traversal, movement upgrades and a world with more than 20 levels. Classes, weapons and talents offer room to tune a character, though the feature count alone does not establish that every option is equally effective or that every build will suit every player.

Presentation and onboarding
Pixel art, audio, level design and character design recur as strengths in the sampled critic excerpts. TouchArcade’s October 18, 2021 review excerpt praised combat depth and presentation while noting that the game stays within familiar genre conventions. Pure Nintendo’s October 29, 2021 excerpt praised level and character design but wished the start menu and combat instructions were more detailed. Switch Player described it as a strong Souls-like Metroidvania on April 6, 2022.
The excerpts are publication-attributed summaries shown on Metacritic; reviewer names and roles were not visible, so there is no verified named-person quotation to attribute. Taken together, they suggest a game with strong genre craft, but not necessarily a gentle first hour or a fresh take on every convention.

What do player ratings say?
At the time of access on October 8, 2026, Steam showed 80% positive from 2,097 English-language reviews overall and 73% positive from 15 reviews in the last 30 days. The recent sample is small and volatile, so it should not be read as a stable change in player opinion. These are Steam’s platform-level user-review figures, not critic scores. Steam store page
The US PlayStation Store page showed 4.22 out of 5 from 2,223 ratings when accessed on October 8, 2026, and describes those ratings as coming from verified owners. Verdict: should you buy Death’s Gambit: Afterlife?
Choose Afterlife if challenging 2D combat, boss learning, build experimentation and interconnected exploration sound rewarding. The expanded edition’s advertised additions make it the version to consider, but the reviews point to meaningful friction: difficulty can feel crushing, dodging may not satisfy every player, and the introduction could explain its systems better. Check the exact platform and any DLC you want before purchasing; the available listings do not prove identical content or performance across systems.
