Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYour first successful house in Deck of Haunts is built around one rule: make every intruder cross a dangerous, controllable route before reaching the Heart room. Start with a layout that adds distance and decision points, use haunt cards where they create the most fear or damage, and spend essence on a single plan instead of scattering upgrades. The opening nights are for learning how people move through your rooms; construction phases turn those lessons into a stronger house.
What you are managing in Deck of Haunts
Deck of Haunts is a deckbuilding roguelite and haunted-house base-building game. You are not controlling a hero walking through a finished level. You are the house: you place rooms, alter routes, play haunt cards on humans and rooms, and harvest essence from successful defenses. The official description invites you to “become a malevolent Haunted House.”

Every decision supports the same objective: prevent intruders from reaching the Heart room, the core of your power. A human who reaches it has found the shortest path through your defenses, so a good first house is less about filling the map quickly and more about making that path long, frightening and costly.

- Intruder pressure: can be answered with direct damage, fear and sanity pressure, or movement control.
- Essence: the reward from successful encounters, used to add or improve rooms and make deck or room selections during construction.
A useful mental model is to treat the Heart room as the destination you are defending, room placement as your defensive geometry, cards as your immediate interventions, and essence as the investment that determines what your next nights look like.
How a run is structured
The v1.03 beginner guide describes each run as 28 nights divided into two repeating phases. The exact balance can change with later patches, but the phase responsibilities are a reliable way to organize your decisions.
| Phase | What happens | Your priority | What success gives you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visitation | Humans enter the house, move through your rooms and must be killed or driven insane before they reach the Heart room. | Read their route, use cards at high-value moments and keep the Heart room safe. | Successful defenses produce essence for development. |
| Construction | You use essence to add or upgrade rooms and make deck or room selections. | Strengthen one coherent route-and-card plan rather than buying unrelated improvements. | A more capable layout and a deck that supports it in later visitations. |
Because there are 28 nights in the v1.03 guide, an early mistake does not necessarily end a run immediately. It does, however, reduce the essence available for later construction. Think of the opening as a chain: a safer first route produces more essence, which buys better rooms or cards, which makes the next visitation safer.

Put the Heart room behind a route, not beside an entrance
The Heart room should not be the first meaningful room a visitor can reach. Place available rooms so an intruder must pass through several spaces before the core is accessible. The official descriptions specifically frame room placement, mazes, traps, scares and special rooms as tools for protecting the Heart room.
You do not need a complicated maze on the first attempt. You need a route that is visibly longer than the shortest possible line. If two arrangements use the same rooms, prefer the one that forces a visitor to make more moves and encounter more of your effects before the Heart room.

Make the route readable to you
A first house is easier to improve when you can explain its intended path. Choose an entrance, identify the sequence of rooms you expect most humans to traverse, and keep the Heart room at the end of that sequence. During the first visitation, compare the intended route with the actual movement. If a visitor bypasses your useful rooms, the layout—not the card draw—is the first thing to fix.
Use rooms to create decisions
Room placement is a control tool even when a room does not directly damage anyone. A junction, detour or special room can make a visitor spend more time inside the house or expose them to another effect. Place your strongest effects where a route is difficult to avoid, rather than where an intruder can simply walk around them.
Leave room for adaptation
The beginner guide warns that room and card draws can change the best arrangement. Do not lock yourself into a blueprint that depends on a room you have not drawn. Build a safe initial route with what is available, then reshape it during construction when a new room or card gives you a better way to slow, redirect or damage visitors.
A reliable procedure for each visitation
- Identify the threat path. Watch where humans enter and which room sequence leads toward the Heart room. Do not spend cards before you know whether the route is behaving as intended.
- Find the first unavoidable contact. Select the room or stretch of the route where a visitor cannot proceed without encountering one of your effects. This is usually a better card target than an isolated room they may never revisit.
- Apply the card that matches the problem. Use direct damage when an intruder is already exposed and close to being eliminated; use fear or sanity pressure when you can keep that pressure building before the Heart room; use a room-targeting effect when changing the route or strengthening a chokepoint protects several future encounters.
- Watch the response. After each important card, observe whether the visitor slows, changes direction, takes damage or continues toward the core. The result tells you whether to reinforce the same point or save the next card for a more decisive moment.
- Protect the final approach. If a human reaches the rooms nearest the Heart room, stop treating the encounter as routine. Spend the resources needed to finish the threat or apply enough pressure to prevent the final advance.
- Record the lesson for construction. When the visitation ends, note which room was bypassed, which effect was unavoidable and where a card created the most value. Use that observation to choose your next room or deck improvement.
This procedure keeps you from reacting to every movement independently. You are testing a route, reinforcing its reliable points and repairing the specific gap that let an intruder progress.
How to use haunt cards efficiently
Target humans when timing matters
Human-targeting cards are most valuable when they change the outcome of an encounter, not merely when they can be played. A card that finishes an exposed intruder prevents the final approach to the Heart room. A fear or sanity card is stronger when the target still has several rooms ahead, because the pressure has time to influence the rest of the route.

Target rooms when the benefit persists
Room-targeting cards can be worthwhile when they improve a chokepoint, make a detour more punishing or protect multiple future visitors. They are less attractive when used on a room that intruders can bypass. Before playing one, ask whether the affected room is on the route you are actually seeing, not merely on the route you intended to build.
Choose a pressure identity
The beginner guide recommends straightforward early damage for new players. Direct damage is easier to evaluate because the result is immediate: a threat is removed or its remaining path is shorter. Sanity pressure can become powerful when your layout keeps visitors inside the house long enough for fear to accumulate, but it asks you to maintain control of their movement.
You can mix both approaches, but decide which one is doing the primary work. A deck that contains damage cards without a route that exposes targets may struggle to finish encounters. A sanity-focused plan without enough distance or control may not have time to produce its advantage.
Construction phase: turn essence into a plan
Construction is where a successful visitation becomes permanent progress. Essence is not simply a currency to spend whenever an option looks attractive; it determines whether the next night supports the house you are trying to build.

First priority: repair the route
If an intruder reached the Heart room or bypassed most of your effects, choose a room addition or upgrade that changes that route. More distance, a better junction or a stronger unavoidable effect usually improves every later visitation more than a disconnected bonus.
Second priority: reinforce the deck’s main pressure
After the route is safe enough, select cards that complement it. A long route gives damage cards more opportunities to finish weakened humans and gives sanity pressure more time to build. A compact route with a strong unavoidable contact favors cards that produce decisive results at that contact point.
Third priority: remove incoherence
When construction offers several appealing choices, reject the one that requires a completely different layout unless you are deliberately changing strategy. A room that only works with a control-heavy arrangement can underperform in a direct-damage house. Coherence is an efficiency advantage because every room and card supports the same encounters.
Spend for the next nights, not the last one
Essence earned late in a visitation should answer the next predictable problem. If the Heart room is already safe but visitors routinely survive with little damage, improve your pressure. If damage is plentiful but visitors reach the core too quickly, improve the route or room control. This keeps construction tied to evidence from your own run.
Build styles to compare
The game does not require one permanent “best” build. Compare a developing house on protection, control, pressure and essence efficiency. The following styles are strategic frameworks inferred from the documented room, card, Heart-room and essence systems; individual balance can change with updates and draws.

| Build emphasis | Layout goal | Card priority | Strength | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Direct damage | Expose intruders repeatedly to rooms where damage can finish them. | Immediate human-targeting damage and effects that make a target vulnerable. | Clear feedback and fast elimination for new players. | Can fail if visitors bypass the damage rooms or reach the Heart room too quickly. |
| Sanity pressure | Keep humans inside a longer route so fear and pressure have time to accumulate. | Fear or sanity effects applied early enough to influence the rest of the path. | Turns extended navigation into a source of escalating danger. | Needs reliable route control; pressure has less time to matter on a short path. |
| Control and detours | Use room placement and effects to slow, redirect or trap movement. | Room-targeting and movement-supporting effects that make the route dependable. | Protects the Heart room by increasing the number of useful encounters. | May lack finishing power if the deck does not convert delay into damage or insanity. |
| Balanced pressure | Build a moderate route with at least one dependable contact point. | A measured mix of damage and sanity cards selected around the rooms drawn. | Adapts when room and card options are unpredictable. | Can become unfocused if every construction choice follows a different idea. |
For a first run, direct damage is the simplest starting identity because the beginner guide recommends it. The important part is not staying with that identity forever; it is recognizing when your room draws make another emphasis more reliable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when the draw changes your plan
Do not treat an unexpected room or card as an obligation to rebuild the entire house. First ask three questions:
- Does it improve the route I already have? If yes, place or select it where it strengthens an unavoidable section.
- Does it solve the problem that actually ended the last visitation? If intruders reached the Heart room, prioritize protection over extra finishing power.
- Does it require a different pressure identity? If so, change gradually. Add supporting pieces during construction and test them on the next visitation rather than abandoning every reliable part of the deck.
The best arrangement is therefore conditional. A card that is excellent in a long, controlled route may be mediocre when visitors have a short path. A room that appears defensive may be more valuable than a damage option if it keeps humans in range of the cards you already own.
Protecting the Heart room: troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely strategic cause | Adjustment for the next construction phase |
|---|---|---|
| Visitors reach the Heart room after passing only one or two rooms. | The entrance and core are connected by a short or overly direct route. | Add distance, move the core behind more rooms, or create a detour that visitors cannot skip. |
| Your strongest room is rarely visited. | The intended route is not the route humans are choosing. | Reposition rooms so the effect sits on an unavoidable path; do not keep investing in a bypassed room. |
| Cards are spent early but threats still survive. | Cards are being played before a target is committed or weakened. | Hold key cards for the first unavoidable contact or for the final approach to the Heart room. |
| Damage removes some humans, but others reach the core. | The deck has finishing power but insufficient route control or distance. | Use construction to add a room or effect that creates more opportunities to apply damage. |
| Sanity pressure never has time to matter. | The route is too short or visitors can bypass the pressure rooms. | Extend the route and make the pressure room part of the path, or shift toward direct damage. |
| Essence purchases feel powerful individually but the house remains fragile. | Rooms and cards are supporting unrelated strategies. | Choose the next upgrade according to one failure you can name: route length, control, finishing damage or sustained sanity pressure. |
Version and update awareness
The detailed opening advice above is tied to the v1.03 beginner guide, including its 28-night run structure. The Steam Community hub reports later post-launch updates that added rooms, creatures, missions, story content, navigation changes and Nightmare Mode. Those additions can change which layouts and card priorities are optimal.
Before following an old build exactly, check the version shown in the game and read the current patch notes or community guidance. The principles remain useful—protect the Heart room, make routes meaningful, use cards at high-value moments and spend essence coherently—but the strongest individual room or card may change after a major update.
Release platforms and dates
Steam lists the PC release of Deck of Haunts as May 7, 2025, with Mantis as developer and DANGEN Entertainment as publisher. Official Nintendo and PlayStation listings show October 8, 2026 console release information. Store availability, pricing and editions can change, so verify the listing for your region and platform before buying.
First-run checklist
- Place the Heart room behind several rooms rather than next to an entrance.
- Build a route you can describe and observe whether humans actually follow it.
- Identify at least one room or junction visitors cannot easily avoid.
- Use early cards for straightforward damage while learning movement, as recommended by the v1.03 beginner guide.
- Apply fear or sanity pressure early only when the route gives it time to matter.
- Save decisive cards for an unavoidable contact or the final approach to the Heart room.
- After each visitation, identify the exact bypass or survival problem that cost you.
- Spend essence on a room or card that fixes that problem and supports your main pressure identity.
- Adapt to the rooms and cards you draw instead of forcing an unbuilt blueprint.
- Recheck detailed build advice after patches that add rooms, creatures, missions, navigation changes or new modes.
A practical first-house plan
Start with a simple, extended route and a direct-damage plan. During the first visitation, watch movement before committing every card. Strengthen the room or junction that visitors must cross, then use damage where a target is exposed or close to the Heart room. In construction, spend essence first on the route failure you observed and second on cards that make that route’s pressure reliable. If later draws give you enough control to keep humans inside longer, add sanity pressure; if they do not, keep the damage plan focused.

This approach teaches the game’s central relationship: rooms create the opportunities, cards exploit them, successful defenses generate essence, and essence lets you make the next route harder to survive.
