Steam lists the game as Steam Deck Verified. The published information does not name every standard difficulty preset, so it is safer to describe the normal system as adjustable rather than promise specific Easy, Normal or Hard buttons. Nightmare Mode is a distinct escalating challenge: 13 nightmares, each lasting 13 nights, with accumulating modifiers and new threats.
What difficulty settings does Deck of Haunts have?
The official Steam listing confirms Adjustable Difficulty as a gameplay accessibility feature. That tells you the challenge can be changed, but the cited Steam material does not publish a complete list of preset names or explain every level’s numerical effect. Do not assume that the game uses a standard Easy/Normal/Hard menu unless your current build actually shows those labels.

Adjustable difficulty
Use the in-game difficulty control when you want the core haunted-house campaign to be more forgiving or more demanding without switching to a separate challenge structure. Because the published listing does not define the individual steps, read the descriptions shown in your own Settings or New Game screen and note the selected value before starting a run. The exact labels can change with an update or differ between platform builds.
Nightmare Mode is its own escalating challenge
The official October 2026 announcement describes Nightmare Mode as “Face 13 escalating Nightmares of 13 nights each, complete with accumulating modifiers and new threats.” In practical terms, this is not merely a higher number on the ordinary difficulty slider. Each nightmare is built around a 13-night run, and the challenge escalates through modifiers and additional threats. Choose it when you want a structured endurance test and changing rules rather than simply reducing or increasing the baseline difficulty.

| Option | What is officially established | How to approach it |
|---|---|---|
| Adjustable Difficulty | Steam lists it as a gameplay accessibility feature; the official listing does not publish every preset name. | Use the difficulty control presented by your current build and read its on-screen explanation. |
| Nightmare Mode | 13 escalating nightmares, each lasting 13 nights, with accumulating modifiers and new threats. | Treat it as a separate escalating mode, not as a synonym for the highest ordinary slider setting. |
Can you play with a controller, keyboard or mouse only?
Steam lists Full Controller Support and a Mouse Only Option. That combination covers both a gamepad-first setup and a point-and-click style setup without requiring a controller for every player. The official pages do not provide a complete action-by-action binding chart, so use the controls screen in your build for the exact button or key assigned to each action.
Controller improvements added in 2026
Official September 2026 updates expanded controller usability across play and menus:
- Camera rotation can be performed with the left joystick horizontally while holding R3.
- Building-preview movement was made smoother.
- Holding the select button allows multi-tile building.
- Controller tooltips were added for cards.
- The gameplay log can be opened with a controller.
- Menu navigation was broadened so more screens can be used without reaching for a mouse.
These changes matter most during building and when checking information mid-run. If a guide or older video shows a different camera gesture, rely on the controls screen in the current version rather than the older demonstration.

Mouse-only play
The Mouse Only Option is an explicit Steam accessibility feature. It is useful if a keyboard is uncomfortable or if you prefer to operate the haunted house with a pointer. The listing does not promise that every platform has the same option, so verify the input menu on a console build before purchasing for a mouse-based setup.

Keyboard bindings and exact actions
The update feed records a fix for key-binding saving. That is a reason to test a custom layout before committing to a long run: change a binding, leave the controls screen, return to it and confirm the new key remains assigned. Since the official pages do not publish a full binding chart, this in-game check is more reliable than copying a list from an older guide.
Which accessibility settings are available?
Steam lists seven accessibility categories. They cover challenge, visual comfort, audio, timing and input rather than offering only subtitle support.
| Category | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Adjustable difficulty | Changes the game’s challenge through the available difficulty control. |
| Adjustable text size | Enlarges written interface content for easier reading. |
| Subtitle options | Provides subtitle controls for players who need or prefer on-screen text. |
| Camera comfort | Offers a camera-related comfort setting for players sensitive to movement or presentation. |
| Custom volume controls | Lets you tailor the game’s audio levels instead of relying on one master setting. |
| Playable without timed input | Provides a way to play without requiring timed input, reducing pressure from timing-based interactions. |
| Mouse-only option | Allows mouse-based input without requiring a controller. |
Text size, brightness and small interface elements
An official update added a brightness slider. Another update corrected text-scaling behavior across gameplay cards, room tooltips, the gameplay log, collection screens and unlock screens. If small text or dark scenes are a problem, increase text size and brightness before beginning a run, then check a card, a room tooltip and the log to make sure the change is being applied consistently in your version.

Subtitle options are listed under Steam’s visual accessibility features. Custom volume controls are listed separately under audio. The published material does not specify the names or number of individual audio channels, so use the labels shown in your sound menu rather than assuming that it separates music, effects and voices in a particular way.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Camera comfort and timing-free play
Camera comfort is intended for players who need less visually uncomfortable camera behavior. The listing does not describe the individual camera toggles, so preview the setting in a safe area and adjust it before a serious run. The Playable without timed input option is similarly broad: it is documented as a way to remove the requirement for timed input, but the official description does not enumerate every affected interaction. Enable it if timing pressure is a barrier, then verify how the current build handles the specific action that concerns you.
How to configure the game before a run
Menu names can differ by platform and version. The following order uses the documented labels and avoids assuming an unpublished button layout.
- Open the game’s Settings, Options or accessibility screen from the title menu or pause menu.
- Set Adjustable Text Size, then inspect a card, tooltip or log entry to confirm that the size is readable.
- Move the brightness slider until rooms and interface elements are comfortable to distinguish.
- Turn on the subtitle option if you need text support for spoken or audible information.
- Choose a camera-comfort setting and test camera movement before building under pressure.
- Adjust the available custom volume controls so important sounds are audible without making the overall mix uncomfortable.
- Enable Playable without timed input if timing requirements create a barrier.
- Select the ordinary adjustable difficulty for a normal campaign, or choose Nightmare Mode separately when you want its 13-night escalating structure.
- Open Controls. Pair or reconnect your controller, review the displayed bindings, or select the mouse-only option if that is your intended input method.
- If you changed a keyboard binding, leave and reopen the controls screen to confirm that it saved before starting a long session.
Steam Deck and console availability
Steam Deck
The Steam page lists Steam Deck: Verified. That certification indicates the game meets Valve’s compatibility requirements for the device. It does not mean that every player will prefer the same text size, brightness or camera setting; the accessibility controls remain worth configuring on the Deck’s smaller display.
Announced console versions
The official console announcement set versions for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S on October 8, 2026. Because that date has passed, check the current store page for your region to confirm the build you can download and its patch level. Do not assume that a setting label on one console maps one-to-one to the Steam menu.

The PlayStation Store listing uses the labels Adjustable Difficulty (Basic), Control Reminders, Tutorial Reminders and Game Pausing, and says controls can be reviewed at any time. Those labels document the PlayStation presentation; they should not be treated as proof that every console menu is identical to Steam’s seven-category list.
| Platform context | Input and comfort information | Challenge information | Status information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam | Full Controller Support, Mouse Only Option, adjustable text size, subtitles, camera comfort, custom volume controls and brightness adjustment in an update. | Adjustable Difficulty; Nightmare Mode has 13 escalating nightmares of 13 nights each. | Steam Deck is listed as Verified. |
| PlayStation listing | Control Reminders, Tutorial Reminders and Game Pausing are listed; controls can be reviewed at any time. | Adjustable Difficulty (Basic) is listed. | Use the current PlayStation build’s menu for platform-specific labels. |
| Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S | The announcement confirms versions, but the cited material does not give a platform-by-platform accessibility matrix. | Nightmare Mode is part of the announced feature set; verify the build’s menu labels. | The announcement set the launch date as October 8, 2026. |
Languages and reading support
SteamDB records interface and subtitle support for English, Japanese, French, German, Simplified Chinese, Dutch, Spanish (Spain), Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Traditional Chinese and Korean. Language availability can be separate from voice support, so check the language selector for the exact text and subtitle combination you want.
Common problems and practical fixes
The difficulty menu does not show Easy, Normal and Hard
That is not necessarily a missing feature. Steam confirms adjustable difficulty but does not publish a complete preset list. Read the labels in your build and use the explanatory text attached to each value instead of looking for a particular three-option naming scheme.
A controller works in gameplay but not in a menu
Update-era changes expanded menu navigation, gameplay-log access and card tooltips. Confirm that the game is running the current patch, then open Controls and test the displayed navigation prompts. If a screen still requires a pointer, the Mouse Only Option can provide an alternative input path on Steam.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.

Text is still hard to read after changing its size
Check a gameplay card, room tooltip, log, collection screen and unlock screen individually. The update feed specifically addressed scaling in those areas, so a mismatch may indicate an older build or a setting that did not persist. Restart the game after confirming the value if the interface continues to display mixed sizes.
The camera feels uncomfortable
Return to Camera Comfort and test the available choice in a low-pressure area. Also use the updated controller camera gesture—hold R3 while moving the left joystick horizontally—if rotation speed or accidental movement is the problem. The official material does not define every camera sub-option, so judge the result in your own build.
Timed interactions are a barrier
Enable Playable without timed input before beginning the run. Since the published description does not list every affected interaction, verify the particular sequence that causes difficulty and keep the setting enabled if it removes the pressure you need to avoid.
Quick Recap
What to choose
- Choose ordinary Adjustable Difficulty when you want the campaign’s standard structure with a tunable challenge level.
- Choose Nightmare Mode when you specifically want 13 escalating 13-night challenges with accumulating modifiers and new threats.
- Use a controller if you want the expanded 2026 gamepad navigation and building improvements.
- Use Mouse Only if pointer input is more comfortable or a controller is not practical.
- On Steam Deck, start with larger text and a brighter display, then fine-tune camera, subtitles, audio and timing options to suit your needs.
