Deep Dish Dungeon beginner guide: how to survive runs and cook meals from scavenged ingredients

By VGSources Team 11 min read

Survive your first Deep Dish Dungeon expedition by treating every descent as a complete loop: prepare at camp, explore carefully, collect useful materials, return before your supplies and options collapse, then craft tools and cook for the next push. The game rewards curiosity rather than speed. Side passages, puzzles, doors and enemy patterns all matter, and food is part of progression because meals bolster strength and recipes provide different stat effects.

This guide explains that loop for a new player, including how to decide when to turn back, how to choose tools and meals without a published universal order, and how solo and co-op runs differ. Deep Dish Dungeon launched on October 13, 2026, from Behold Studios and Raw Fury for Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Xbox on PC, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Cloud.

What you are trying to accomplish on a first run

Deep Dish Dungeon is a dungeon crawler and exploration game built around a hand-crafted, puzzly dungeon with metroidvania and crafting elements. The practical objective of an early expedition is not to clear as much map as possible in one attempt. It is to bring back enough resources and information to make the next attempt safer and more productive.

Your campsite is the point between expeditions. You leave with a route and a limited set of tools and food, investigate the dungeon, then return to improve the campsite, craft equipment and prepare meals. Each return should answer a question: which obstacle can I now handle, which route is worth revisiting, and which stat effect will help on the next journey?

Prepare at camp before opening the dungeon

Set a modest objective

Choose one clear goal instead of trying to reach the deepest possible room immediately. A first objective might be learning the entrance area, locating a blocked doorway, gathering enough material for one tool, or identifying a safe route back. A narrow target makes it easier to recognize success and leave with resources intact.

Check tools and food

Look at what is already available before departing. Note which tools can deal with the obstacle you expect to meet and whether you have a meal whose effect fits the route. Do not spend every resource on a speculative upgrade if your planned path does not use it.

Plan a return point

Decide in advance what will make you turn around. Examples include reaching the planned door, collecting the material needed for a tool, using the meal’s benefit, or finding a new landmark. A preselected stopping point prevents a successful scouting trip from becoming an avoidable loss.

Coordinate a co-op party

The game supports solo play and online co-op with up to two friends. Before entering together, assign simple responsibilities: one player can lead navigation and mark discoveries verbally, while another checks side rooms and watches enemy behavior. Agree that anyone can call for a retreat when the party has met its objective.

First expedition: a safe step-by-step loop

  1. Leave camp with a route. Pick the corridor or room sequence that matches your objective. Avoid wandering without knowing which landmark will tell you that the trip is complete.
  2. Move slowly through the opening area. Look at junctions, room edges, shadows, doors and passageways before committing to the next screen or corridor. The dungeon is designed to reward investigation, so the obvious path is not always the useful one.
  3. Search optional spaces. Check side routes and puzzle areas when doing so does not expose you to an unreasonable fight. A short detour can reveal resources, a clue about a lock or a route that makes the return journey easier.
  4. Record what you learn. Mentally note blocked doors, puzzle mechanisms, enemy locations and intersections. Even when you cannot progress, information reduces wasted movement on the next run.
  5. Collect resources deliberately. Gather materials that support your immediate objective first. If your inventory contains something you cannot yet use, keep it only while the route remains safe; do not let a low-value detour dictate the entire expedition.
  6. Test encounters rather than rushing them. Watch how an enemy approaches, attacks and recovers. One careful observation is more valuable than repeatedly charging into an unknown pattern.
  7. Turn back when the objective is complete. The return trip is part of the run, not wasted time. Bringing materials to camp gives you a concrete advantage; losing the chance to craft or cook because you pushed too far does not.

How to scavenge ingredients and other resources

The available descriptions establish that players forage and scavenge through the dungeon, then bring resources back to camp. They do not publish a fixed ingredient list, universal spawn table or floor-by-floor route. Treat every new material as a question to investigate in the current game build rather than relying on a supposed online starter recipe.

  • ANTI-STATIC: great for cleaning and wiping down your gaming gear and electronics leaving behind no visible residue
  • COMPACT RESEALABLE PACKAGE: store your pack of Windex Gaming Wipes anywhere in your home for whenever a quick and easy wipedown is needed

Use a three-pass search

  1. Pass one: the main route. Check the visible path so you know where the next exit, door or junction lies.
  2. Pass two: nearby branches. Inspect side rooms and corners that can be reached without committing to an unknown combat sequence.
  3. Pass three: newly opened areas. After a puzzle or door changes the route, search the revealed space before moving onward. Returning later is possible, but searching while the landmark is fresh prevents missed materials.

Prioritize by immediate value

What you find What to do with it Reason
Material that matches a tool you expect to need Keep it and make the tool at camp when the route is confirmed It directly shortens the path to a known obstacle
Ingredient that contributes to a useful stat effect Bank it for a meal whose effect fits your next objective Food can strengthen a future expedition instead of merely filling space
Unidentified or currently unusable material Note where it was found and carry it only if the route remains safe Its value may become clear through later recipes or campsite options
Low-priority item reached after a dangerous encounter Leave it and return after improving preparation No ingredient is worth turning a controlled run into a rescue attempt

When an area feels empty, check the geometry rather than assuming it has no value. Hand-crafted corridors can hide a passage behind a corner, a puzzle interaction or a door that only becomes relevant after another discovery.

When to return to camp instead of pushing deeper

Returning is usually the correct choice when you have achieved the run’s stated objective. The game loop explicitly expects repeated journeys, so progress is measured by what you bring back and what the campsite can now provide.

Return now if

  • You have the material needed for the tool or meal you planned.
  • Your remaining route is unfamiliar and would require several untested encounters.
  • You have found a new door, puzzle or landmark but lack the preparation to use it safely.
  • You are carrying resources that would materially improve the next camp phase.
  • Your party is disagreeing about whether the next room is worth the risk.

Continue when

  • The next objective is close and the route back is understood.
  • You have the tool and food effect needed for the obstacle ahead.
  • You are still learning enemy behavior without spending resources faster than you can recover.
  • A newly opened branch is short, clearly connected to your return path and likely to answer the current objective.

A useful rule is to ask whether another room will change your next preparation decision. If it will not, bank what you have and start the next descent with better information.

Craft tools for the obstacle, not for a guessed order

The official game descriptions do not establish a universal tool sequence. That means a guide promising a single correct first tool would be misleading. Instead, match crafting to the route you intend to take.

Identify the bottleneck

At camp, name the obstacle that currently stops progress: a door, environmental interaction, puzzle route or other barrier. Review the materials you brought back and craft the tool that addresses that bottleneck if the game makes the connection clear.

Do not overcraft

Making every available item before you know where it helps can leave fewer resources for meals or a later requirement. Craft one route-enabling tool, return to the relevant area, and reassess after you learn what lies beyond it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use failed attempts as information

If a tool does not solve the problem you expected, note what the interaction actually requires and bring that information back to camp. A failed test is useful when it prevents you from spending the next run on the same assumption.

Cooking meals from scavenged ingredients

Cooking is not a decorative campsite activity. Steam describes meals as a way to bolster strength, with recipes producing different effects on stats. Recipes can also unlock over time as you gather and experiment, so ingredients have strategic value beyond their immediate use.

What to cook first

There is no authoritative published starter recipe, ingredient quantity, spoilage chart or stamina threshold. Use the recipe text shown in your current game and choose the meal that supports the next route. Compare each available option on three axes:

Axis Question to ask Best fit
Stat effect Which attribute does the meal improve? Pick a recovery-oriented effect for a combat-heavy route, or a stamina-oriented effect for long traversal and puzzle work when the in-game description supports that distinction
Ingredient cost Will this meal consume materials needed for a tool or another recipe? Spend common surplus ingredients first and preserve rare materials until their use is clear
Route fit What will the next expedition actually demand? Match the meal to the obstacle, enemy pattern and distance you intend to cover

The recovery and stamina examples above are decision guidance, not names or guaranteed effects for a particular dish. Always follow the current in-game recipe description if it differs.

A practical cooking workflow

  1. Return with a purpose. Do not cook simply because ingredients are available; identify the next route first.
  2. Review unlocked recipes. Read the displayed stat effects and requirements. Record which ingredients are easy to replace and which will slow a future tool upgrade.
  3. Choose one primary meal. Select the effect that solves the next expedition’s main problem. A focused benefit is easier to evaluate than several unrelated choices.
  4. Reserve a fallback. If you have enough ingredients, keep a second option for a different route or a co-op partner whose role has another need. Do not consume the entire storehouse on one uncertain attempt.
  5. Test the result deliberately. Notice how the meal changes your next run and whether it helps with the intended task. Use that observation to refine later cooking decisions.

How food contributes to progression

Food advances your expedition capability in two ways. The immediate meal effect helps you handle the next journey, while discovering and unlocking recipes expands the set of preparations available at camp. Because the game does not publish a complete recipe database in its launch information, progression should be read from the recipe and campsite interfaces in your version rather than from a fixed external list.

Learn enemies instead of forcing every fight

Raw Fury’s launch description emphasizes learning diverse enemy behaviors, solving problems and persisting. Apply that literally during early runs. Observe the distance at which an enemy reacts, the shape and timing of its attack, and the moment when it becomes vulnerable or stops pursuing.

Solo approach

In solo play, keep encounters close to terrain you understand and avoid entering a second unknown room while still learning the first enemy. If a fight consumes more preparation than the nearby objective is worth, retreat and return with a better tool or meal.

Co-op approach

With up to two friends, avoid turning the party into three independent scouts. Keep one player responsible for navigation, let another inspect safe branches, and communicate before opening an unfamiliar route. A shared retreat decision prevents one player from dragging the group beyond its prepared range.

Use the campsite as a progression dashboard

Every return should change at least one of three things: your knowledge of the dungeon, your available tools or your available food effects. If none changes, the expedition probably did not have a clear objective.

  • Knowledge: update your mental map with doors, puzzles, enemy behavior and safe return paths.
  • Tools: convert gathered materials into the equipment needed for the next confirmed obstacle.
  • Meals: turn scavenged ingredients into a stat effect that matches the next route and preserve materials that may unlock a more useful recipe.

This dashboard keeps the metroidvania structure manageable: a blocked route is a future preparation target, not a reason to repeatedly collide with it during an unprepared run.

Common first-run mistakes and fixes

Mistake What it causes Correction
Sprinting past every optional passage Missed resources, puzzles and information about alternate routes Pause at junctions and inspect nearby branches before moving on
Carrying a run far past its objective Resources remain unbanked and the return becomes dangerous Set a stopping point at camp and turn around when it is met
Cooking without checking the next route Ingredients are spent on an effect that does not solve the immediate problem Choose meals by stat effect, ingredient cost and route fit
Crafting every available tool Materials are unavailable for a more relevant tool or meal Craft for the confirmed bottleneck, then reassess
Repeating an enemy attack blindly Health or preparation is lost without learning the pattern Watch one encounter, identify behavior and change the approach
Splitting up in co-op without a plan Players trigger separate threats and lose track of the return route Assign a leader, communicate discoveries and agree on retreat signals

A model first-run routine

  1. At camp, choose one nearby landmark or blocked route as the objective.
  2. Take the existing tool and a meal whose displayed effect supports that objective.
  3. Explore the main corridor, then inspect safe side rooms and corners.
  4. Pause at the first unfamiliar enemy and learn its behavior before committing to a fight.
  5. Gather materials that support the planned tool or meal and note every door or puzzle you cannot yet use.
  6. Return as soon as the objective or its required materials are secured.
  7. At camp, craft the route-enabling tool, cook a fitting meal, and choose the next objective from what you learned.

This routine is intentionally repeatable rather than tied to a particular floor or recipe. The dungeon is hand-crafted, but the exact ingredient locations, quantities and recipe unlocks are not specified in the launch materials and can depend on the current game version.

What the launch information does and does not specify

The established systems are exploration, scavenging, campsite improvement, tool crafting, cooking, recipe effects, enemy-behavior learning, puzzles and solo or online co-op for one player with up to two friends. The launch information does not provide a guaranteed starter dish, exact ingredient counts, stamina breakpoints, spoilage rules, a universal crafting order or a floor-by-floor walkthrough. Use the in-game descriptions for those values, and treat any guide that states them without version and location context cautiously.
