Your weapons fire automatically, but you decide where to move, what to mine, which objectives to pursue, and how to shape the cave as alien hordes close in. That ability to carve routes and bottlenecks gives the familiar survivor-like loop a distinctive tactical edge.
What kind of game is Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor?
It is a top-down, single-player survivor-like auto-shooter—not a co-op session of the original Deep Rock Galactic. Steam describes runs built around fighting alien hordes, mining resources, unlocking upgrades, and using the series’ arsenal. Weapons fire automatically, so the main moment-to-moment decisions are about movement, positioning, mining, objectives, and building your character rather than aiming each shot yourself. Steam’s store page lists the game’s features and release details.
The original game’s setting and familiar mining fantasy remain, but the format is different: you guide one dwarf through procedurally generated caves, enemy waves, and mission objectives. Complete objectives to reach extraction and push toward deeper, more difficult encounters. If you are looking for the cooperative shooter’s team play, this is not that experience.
How mining turns into a combat tool
Mining supplies resources, but it also lets you reshape the arena. You can cut through walls to open a tunnel, create an escape route, funnel pursuers through a bottleneck, or make a looping path around an open area. PC Gamer’s review highlights that most enemies cannot dig through rock, making your choice of route matter as much as your weapon build.

That is the game’s defining twist: the cave is not just scenery around an automatic firing system. You can alter the space enemies move through, using the terrain to create room to maneuver or to control how a horde approaches. Movement and route planning therefore carry much of the active decision-making that aiming would in a conventional shooter.
Progression gives runs several purposes
There are reasons to keep playing both within a run and between runs. During dives, you collect resources and gear; across the larger game, objectives, campaign tracks, achievements, and mastery challenges open up further options. PC Gamer describes a progression system that includes permanent upgrades funded by mined resources, gear with persistent bonuses, and challenges offering bonuses tied to weapons, classes, and biomes.

Weapons can be modified through stat upgrades and overclocks. PC Gamer’s review describes a roster of 12 classes and multiple run modes, including daily runs, mastery challenges, and anomaly dives. Those counts and mode names can change with updates, so check the current game listing for the latest content rather than treating them as permanent specifications.
The overlapping goals give a run more context than simply surviving as long as possible: you may be working toward a mission objective, gathering resources for an upgrade, or pursuing an unlock. The trade-off is administrative friction. PC Gamer’s reviewer says managing loadouts across 12 dwarves can become busywork, and fitted gear can narrow the choices that feel worthwhile. The reviewer estimates that completionists may spend more than 100 hours clearing every checklist; that is an attributed estimate, not an average playtime measurement.

Is Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor worth playing?
PC Gamer’s Robin Valentine calls it “the survivors-like genre at its most engaging and tactical.” That is a critic’s judgment, but the review’s reasoning points to the game’s strongest fit: players who enjoy short action runs, experimenting with builds, steadily unlocking options, and using the environment to influence enemy movement.
It may be a weaker fit if you want cooperative play, dislike repeated loadout management, or find long completion checklists tiring. The game’s automatic weapons make it easy to understand the basic loop, while the combination of mining, objectives, gear, and permanent progression adds substantial decisions around that loop. The balance between satisfying long-term goals and keeping up with them will depend on how much you enjoy that kind of repetition.
