Deep Siren Demo is a free Steam demo released on September 27, 2026. Its published minimums are modest on Windows, macOS, and SteamOS + Linux, but Steam currently labels the game’s Steam Deck compatibility Unknown. That status means Valve has not checked the demo for compatibility; it is not the same as Verified or Playable.
Deep Siren Demo requirements at a glance
The demo listing gives separate minimum specifications for Windows, macOS, and SteamOS + Linux. The figures are minimum requirements, not performance targets: meeting them does not establish a frame-rate level, graphics preset, loading time, controller behavior, or overall stability.

| Platform | Operating system | CPU minimum | Memory | Graphics requirement | Storage | Audio | Steam Deck rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows | 64-bit Windows | 2.5 GHz single-core or 2 GHz dual-core | 4 GB RAM | 3D graphics card compatible with OpenGL 2.0 and 1 GB graphics memory; DirectX 9.0 | 1 GB available | DirectX 9.0c-compatible sound card with latest drivers | Unknown |
| macOS | macOS 10.15 Catalina or later | Intel 2 GHz dual-core | 4 GB RAM | Not stated in the Steam minimum specification | 1 GB available | Not stated in the Steam minimum specification | Unknown |
| SteamOS + Linux | Ubuntu 14.04, Mint 17, or later | 2.5 GHz single-core or 2 GHz dual-core | 4 GB RAM | OpenGL 2.0 graphics with 1 GB graphics memory | 1 GB available | OpenAL-compatible sound | Unknown |
“Not stated” means the platform row does not publish that detail; it should not be read as a claim that no graphics or audio capability is needed. The listing also does not provide recommended specifications, a target resolution, or a target frame rate.
What the Windows minimum means
Operating system and processor
The Windows row requires a 64-bit operating system. The processor floor is either a 2.5 GHz single-core CPU or a 2 GHz dual-core CPU. Clock speed alone cannot predict how the demo will feel on a modern machine, because architecture, thermal limits, background processes, and graphics drivers also affect results. The published figures only establish the entry-level specification used by the store page.

Graphics API and memory
The listed 3D adapter must support OpenGL 2.0 and have 1 GB of graphics memory. DirectX 9.0 is also named in the Windows requirements. These are API and memory-floor checks, not a promise that every card meeting them will deliver identical visuals or smoothness. An integrated GPU can have a different memory arrangement from a card with dedicated memory, so confirm how your system reports graphics memory before treating the specification as a pass.
Storage and sound
Reserve 1 GB of available storage for the demo. “Available” refers to free space on the destination drive, not the total capacity printed on the drive. Windows audio support is specified as a DirectX 9.0c-compatible sound card with the latest drivers. A system that launches but has missing or distorted sound should be checked against that driver requirement rather than assumed to have a graphics problem.
macOS requirements and Apple-specific limits
The macOS minimum is Catalina (10.15) or later, paired with an Intel 2 GHz dual-core processor and 4 GB of memory. The listing sets the storage floor at 1 GB but does not publish a macOS graphics API, graphics-memory figure, or audio-device requirement.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

The store information supplied for the demo does not state whether an Apple Silicon build, translation layer, or particular Mac GPU has been tested. A Mac owner should therefore treat the Intel wording as the documented CPU baseline and verify behavior on the exact machine rather than inferring compatibility from the operating-system version alone.
SteamOS and Linux requirements
Supported distribution wording
The Linux row names Ubuntu 14.04 and Mint 17 or later, with the same processor and memory floor listed for Windows. Those distribution versions are the wording on the Steam page; they do not amount to a guarantee for every current Linux distribution, desktop environment, kernel, or driver stack.

Graphics and sound
Linux graphics must support OpenGL 2.0 and provide 1 GB of graphics memory. Audio is specified as OpenAL-compatible. A machine can satisfy the CPU and RAM figures and still fail to start if its graphics driver does not expose the required OpenGL functionality or its audio stack cannot provide the required interface.
Why Linux support is not Deck certification
SteamOS + Linux is a desktop operating-system category. Steam Deck compatibility is a separate Valve review status. The presence of a Linux minimum does not establish that the game has been tested with the Deck’s controls, display resolutions, text size, default settings, suspend and resume behavior, or performance expectations.

Can Deep Siren Demo run on Steam Deck?
There is no official yes-or-no compatibility result yet. The demo’s store page says “Steam Deck Compatibility — Unknown.” Valve defines that label as: “Unknown: We haven’t checked this game for compatibility yet.” In practical terms, Valve has not awarded the demo a Verified or Playable rating in the listing covered here.
That distinction matters because a Linux minimum specification answers only whether the developer has published a basic Linux baseline. Valve’s Deck review also considers whether controller input works without configuration, whether the game supports the Deck’s display resolutions, whether default settings are appropriate, and whether text is legible on the handheld screen. None of those outcomes is established by an Unknown badge.
What is and is not known
- Known: Steam lists the demo’s Steam Deck status as Unknown.
- Known: Valve’s definition says Unknown means the game has not yet been checked for compatibility.
- Not established: native controller support, button prompts, readable interface text, frame rate, graphics settings, suspend/resume behavior, or stability on Deck.
- Not established: that installing the demo through SteamOS will produce a playable experience simply because the page includes a Linux requirement.
How to make a cautious Deck decision
If you already own a Steam Deck, open the demo’s store page on the device and read the current compatibility notice before installing. If you choose to test it while the status remains Unknown, treat the first launch as an experiment rather than a guarantee. Check the opening menus, text readability, controller navigation, audio, loading, and a representative puzzle sequence. Record any problem separately: a missing control binding is a different issue from a rendering failure or an audio-driver fault.

For a buyer deciding whether to purchase a Steam Deck handheld gaming PC specifically for this demo, the Unknown label is the decisive limitation. The published requirements do not supply the evidence needed to promise that the demo will be comfortable or stable on the handheld.
Installing and checking the demo on a PC
The following checks use only the specifications published for the demo. They are a way to compare your computer with the listing, not a substitute for a developer performance guarantee.
- Identify the operating system. Confirm that Windows is 64-bit, macOS is Catalina or newer, or Linux is Ubuntu 14.04/Mint 17 or a later distribution in the store’s stated family.
- Check the processor. Compare the CPU model and clock information with the platform row. On Windows and Linux, the listed alternatives are a 2.5 GHz single-core or 2 GHz dual-core processor; macOS names an Intel 2 GHz dual-core processor.
- Check installed memory. The minimum is 4 GB RAM on all three platform rows. Leave additional headroom for the operating system and other applications rather than treating the entire installed amount as available to the game.
- Verify graphics support. On Windows and Linux, confirm OpenGL 2.0 capability and 1 GB of graphics memory. Windows also lists DirectX 9.0. Update the graphics driver if the system reports an older or incomplete API implementation.
- Free the destination space. Make at least 1 GB available on the drive where Steam will install the demo. Steam may need temporary working space during installation, so avoid filling the drive to its final gigabyte.
- Check audio support. Windows requires a DirectX 9.0c-compatible sound card and current drivers; Linux requires OpenAL-compatible sound. macOS has no audio detail in the published row.
- Install from the Steam demo listing and launch. If the game fails, note the exact stage: download, installation, startup, graphics initialization, sound, input, or a particular puzzle scene. That detail makes driver and configuration troubleshooting more targeted.
Common failure points and sensible fixes
The game will not install
First check free space on the selected library drive, not merely the drive’s total capacity. If space is sufficient, verify that Steam is installing the demo rather than a different entry with a larger footprint. The demo and the planned full game are separate listings with different storage figures.
Startup reports a graphics or API error
Compare the adapter against the OpenGL 2.0 and 1 GB graphics-memory requirement, then install the latest driver offered for that hardware and operating system. On Windows, also confirm that DirectX 9.0 support is present. A driver update cannot turn hardware that lacks the required API into compliant hardware, so check the adapter’s capabilities directly.
Sound is missing or unstable
On Windows, revisit the DirectX 9.0c-compatible sound-card and latest-driver requirement. On Linux, check that the active audio setup exposes OpenAL compatibility. Because the macOS row does not specify an audio interface, isolate the issue by testing system audio and the game’s own output settings before drawing a platform-wide conclusion.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
The game launches but controls or text are awkward on Deck
That outcome would be consistent with an unreviewed title, not evidence that the published Linux minimum is wrong. The Unknown status leaves controller mapping, display scaling, default settings, and legibility unresolved. Capture the behavior and check the store page again later for a changed Valve rating or developer update.
Demo requirements versus the planned full game
The full game has its own Steam listing and a planned Q2 2027 release. Its minimum requirements should not be substituted for the demo’s current requirements.
| Item | Deep Siren Demo | Planned full game |
|---|---|---|
| Release information | Free demo released September 27, 2026 | Planned for Q2 2027 |
| Windows minimum RAM | 4 GB | 4 GB |
| SteamOS + Linux minimum RAM | 4 GB | 4 GB |
| Windows minimum storage | 1 GB | 5 GB |
| SteamOS + Linux minimum storage | 1 GB | 5 GB |
| Full-game requirements for other details | Use the demo listing | Not established by the demo specification |
The larger storage figure on the full-game page is the clearest practical difference in the published rows. It does not prove that the final game will have a particular frame rate or Deck rating, and it does not change the amount of space stated for the demo.
What kind of game is the demo?
Steam describes Deep Siren as a Lovecraftian World War II horror fairytale. The player follows a survivor of the U.S.S. Siren who encounters a mermaid and enters an underwater supernatural-horror world. The demo presents hand-drawn art, puzzles, full voiceover, a soundtrack, cosmetic unlocks, and an eye-closing puzzle mechanic.

Those features help explain why Deck testing should include more than whether the executable opens. A puzzle built around visual timing or an eye-closing interaction needs readable prompts and reliable input; voiceover and soundtrack make audio output part of the experience rather than an optional extra. The store requirements do not quantify how demanding those systems are, so they cannot be used to predict performance beyond the published minimum checks.
Practical verdict
On paper, the demo asks for 4 GB of RAM, a low-end processor specification, OpenGL 2.0-class graphics, and 1 GB of free storage on Windows or SteamOS + Linux; macOS adds the Catalina-or-newer and Intel CPU conditions listed by Steam. The important qualification is platform certification: Steam Deck compatibility is currently Unknown, and Valve says that means the game has not been checked. Install it on Deck only if you are comfortable testing an unreviewed title, and do not treat the Linux requirements as a promise of Verified or Playable behavior.
