Defold developers can now target Microsoft Xbox consoles with Defold 1.14.0, released on October 12, 2026. The support is free for developers approved by Microsoft, but it is not an unrestricted download: Xbox approval, access to Microsoft’s console tools and Defold’s verification are all required before a team can build and test an Xbox game.
What changed in Defold 1.14.0
The Defold Foundation announced official Xbox development support in version 1.14.0. The release gives eligible teams an Xbox extension, setup and workflow documentation, and Xbox-specific developer support. Defold says developers can reuse game logic and assets across supported platforms, while adding platform-specific integrations where a console requires them.

The Foundation describes this as completing support for three major console platform families: Xbox, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch. That is the Foundation’s characterization of its platform coverage, not a claim that the engine is equivalent to every competing tool in performance, certification speed or commercial reach.

Xbox development follows two approval gates: Microsoft must approve the organization for Xbox console development, and Defold must then verify that status before providing its Xbox resources.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Apply for Xbox development. Use Microsoft’s Xbox publishing information and, where applicable, the ID@Xbox program. Complete the Xbox console developer registration and approval process.
- Request Defold through Microsoft. After approval, sign in to Microsoft’s Xbox middleware page with an account associated with the approved organization and request Defold.
- Wait for verification. Defold verifies the developer status and then provides the Xbox extension, build, bundling and testing instructions, plus Xbox-specific support.
- Obtain Microsoft’s console tools. The required development tools must come through authorized Microsoft channels. Defold cannot distribute them because they are covered by Microsoft’s NDA restrictions.
The result is gated console access, not a feature that every Defold user can activate immediately. Engine support also does not guarantee that a game will pass Microsoft certification or be published on Xbox.
What “free” means for Xbox development
Defold’s Xbox support and documentation are provided at no charge to approved Xbox developers. Defold’s licensing policy also says the main product has no subscription, royalty or licensing fee, and that developers may sell games and plugins. The policy describes Defold as free to use and source available; source availability does not mean third parties may commercialize Defold itself.

Those statements do not make the entire console-development process free. Microsoft controls approval, access to its console tools and the NDA governing those tools. The available information does not establish the total cost of hardware, development operations, testing or publishing for an individual project.

What developers can reuse—and what they must adapt
Shared code and assets can reduce the work involved in adding Xbox to an existing project. Defold’s announcement specifically points to sharing game logic and assets across supported targets. However, Xbox features such as user management and game saves are supplied through an Xbox extension and may require platform-specific code.

Plan for a platform layer rather than assuming a completely identical build. Input, account behavior, save data, platform services, performance tuning and packaging may need Xbox-specific implementation or testing even when the core game remains shared.
Xbox requirements still apply
Microsoft’s current Xbox Requirements page identifies Console version 16.4 and records changes dated August 6, 2026. It requires Xbox titles to be fully functional, testable, stable and free of serious defects. Console navigation must work with a controller, and a title targeting Xbox Series X|S must support the complete device family for that generation.

Defold supplies engine integration; it does not perform certification on a developer’s behalf. Teams remain responsible for meeting Microsoft’s technical, policy and product-component requirements, testing on authorized hardware and completing the platform’s submission process.
Check the 1.14.0 migration impact
Teams upgrading primarily for Xbox should read the complete Defold 1.14.0 release notes before changing a production project. The release includes breaking changes unrelated to the headline feature:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Generational game-object and collection handles change the native ABI.
- Projects that use prebuilt dmSDK libraries need those libraries rebuilt.
- The option to disable a shared Lua state was removed.
- 32-bit Windows artifacts are no longer built or distributed.
These changes matter most to projects with native extensions, custom build scripts or older desktop tooling. Test the upgrade in a branch, rebuild native dependencies and verify every target before moving the project’s main development line to 1.14.0.
Where Xbox fits in Defold’s platform strategy
In February 2026, the Foundation described Xbox support as work in progress and warned that roadmap notes represented focus rather than promises. The October announcement supersedes that status: Xbox support is now available in 1.14.0 for approved developers.
There is no announced Xbox game release date tied to the feature, and the announcement provides no comparative performance figures, certification timelines or market statistics. The practical benefit is access to another console target from the same engine, provided a team can satisfy Microsoft’s onboarding and compliance requirements.

A practical readiness checklist
- Confirm that your organization has Microsoft Xbox developer approval.
- Use an account linked to that organization when requesting Defold on the Xbox middleware page.
- Secure Microsoft’s authorized console development tools and comply with their NDA.
- Plan Xbox-specific handling for user accounts, saves and other platform services.
- Test controller-only navigation and the complete Xbox Series X|S device family when applicable.
- Review the 1.14.0 ABI and build changes before upgrading native extensions or automation.
- Budget separately for hardware, testing and the rest of the Xbox publishing process; Defold’s free support does not remove those responsibilities.
