Delayed Game vs Similar Alternatives: What Should You Play While You Wait?

The best substitute for a delayed game depends on what you are actually waiting for: the next chapter of a franchise, a particular gameplay loop, a solo campaign, multiplayer competition, or a story-heavy role-playing experience. If the delayed title is a known sequel, start with its predecessor—Grand Theft Auto V for Grand Theft Auto VI, or The Wolf Among Us for The Wolf Among Us 2. If the target is still vague, match the genre and play style instead. The choices below separate those decisions and include a preorder check so a changed date does not make the purchase decision for you.

Start with the kind of replacement you want

A substitute is useful only when it satisfies the reason you wanted the delayed game. A direct predecessor preserves characters, setting and controls; a genre match preserves the moment-to-moment activity; a platform match removes practical friction. Choose the row that describes your priority rather than assuming the most famous game is automatically the best interim option.

Reader priority Best current choice Why it fits
Direct continuity with Grand Theft Auto VI Grand Theft Auto V It is the same franchise and the direct predecessor.
Direct continuity with The Wolf Among Us 2 The Wolf Among Us It is the original entry before the announced continuation.
Multiplayer racing on Switch 2 Mario Kart World It matches the social-racing use case.
Exploration and action Donkey Kong Bananza It matches an exploration-and-destruction play style.
Solo shooting with progression Splatoon Raiders It matches the need for a mission-based solo shooter.
Tactical, narrative RPG play Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave It matches turn-based play with multi-path storytelling.
Story-led RPG play Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter It matches a narrative-first role-playing preference.

Why a direct predecessor is usually the safest substitute

When the delayed title is a sequel, the preceding game answers more of your uncertainty than an unrelated release. You learn the franchise’s tone, core systems and recurring characters without guessing whether a different game will satisfy the same expectation. You also avoid spending the waiting period on a game whose central loop is only superficially similar.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure – PlayStation 5
  • Face thrilling, unpredictable challenges as you explore distinctive hand-crafted lands through deeply immersive and expressive controls.
  • PERILOUS PLATFORMING EXPERIENCE - Explore here, there and everywhere as you utilize Sackboy’s cool, diverse move-set to face a huge variety of thrilling challenges, fierce enemies and startling surprises.
  • RE-STUFFED. RE-STITCHED. RE-ZIPPED - Sackboy returns to the big time stuffed with fresh moves and game-changing gadgets in an awe-inspiring and downright fun 3D adventure in this new, but familiar world.

Grand Theft Auto V while waiting for Grand Theft Auto VI

Grand Theft Auto V is the clearest choice for someone waiting for Grand Theft Auto VI. It provides direct franchise continuity rather than merely offering an open-world crime setting. Play it if your priority is understanding the series’ style, switching between protagonists, and moving through a large urban sandbox before the new entry arrives.

There is no requirement to finish every activity. A first-time player can concentrate on the main story and the systems that define the series, then stop when the delayed sequel becomes available. A returning player may prefer a shorter refresher: replay a few major missions, revisit the map and controls, and review any story notes you personally need. Do not treat familiarity with the predecessor as proof that the sequel will use identical systems; a delay can change timing, features and platform plans.

The Wolf Among Us while waiting for The Wolf Among Us 2

The Wolf Among Us is the appropriate bridge to The Wolf Among Us 2 because it is the original entry, not simply another choice-driven adventure. It establishes the characters and world that the continuation is expected to build on. Choose it when continuity and narrative context matter more than having the newest graphics or a different combat system.

Because this is a story-led series, spoilers matter more here than in a competitive game. If you intend to play the first episode or season, avoid summaries and video thumbnails that reveal its central mystery. Finish the original at your own pace, and then recheck the continuation’s current date and platform information instead of assuming an announced window remains unchanged.

When the delayed game is unspecified: match the play loop

If you do not know the exact title—or if the predecessor is unavailable on your hardware—identify the activity you want to perform repeatedly. “Something like it” can mean racing against friends, exploring and breaking through environments, completing solo shooting missions, making tactical turns, or following a long-form story. Those are different needs and should lead to different purchases.

For social racing on Switch 2: Mario Kart World

Mario Kart World is the most direct interim choice for a reader whose delayed game is supposed to provide short, repeatable races with friends or family on Switch 2. Its fit is social racing, not franchise continuity with an unrelated title. Pick it when local or online competition, quick rematches and an accessible racing format are more important than a campaign or a deep role-playing system.

Rank #2
OCTOPATH TRAVELER 0 (PS5)
  • Embark on an adventure of your own creation. The latest in the OCTOPATH TRAVELER series.
  • New story content – Experience original, streamlined story content and quests with new paths to achieve.
  • Character creation – Create a customized protagonist with unique appearance, voice, motions and more.
  • Town building system – Rebuild the protagonist's town as the story progresses with evolving town reconstruction mechanics and development while inviting new people to live in the town.
  • HD-2D Visuals – The series’ iconic graphic style returns, bringing a striking blend of retro 2D characters in a beautiful 3D world.

Before purchasing, confirm that the edition you are considering is the Switch 2 version and that every person who needs to play can use the intended multiplayer mode. The name alone does not establish which features, accessories or online requirements apply in your region; use the current store and Nintendo account information for those details.

For exploration and destruction: Donkey Kong Bananza

Donkey Kong Bananza fits a player who wants to roam, discover routes and interact physically with the environment. It is a better substitute for an exploration-and-action loop than a linear shooter or a dialogue-heavy RPG. Choose it when the pleasure of finding a new area and using movement or destruction to open a path is the part of the delayed game you miss most.

This recommendation is about play style, not a promise that the worlds, camera or progression systems match another title one for one. Check the current Switch 2 listing for release status and any hardware requirements before committing.

For a solo shooter with progression: Splatoon Raiders

Splatoon Raiders is the targeted option when you want shooting missions that can be approached as a solo progression experience. It addresses the need to practise, unlock or advance through missions without making competitive multiplayer the condition for enjoying the game.

Choose this over a direct predecessor when the delayed title’s appeal is primarily aiming, movement and mission completion rather than its characters or story universe. Verify the current mode breakdown and platform availability, since announced features and regional listings can change before release.

For tactical, branching storytelling: Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave belongs on the shortlist for readers who want turn-based decisions alongside a narrative that can take more than one path. It is the closest fit in the matrix for tactical RPG play with multi-path storytelling, so it can occupy the same mental space as a delayed strategy campaign even when the setting and cast are unrelated.

Rank #3
Hello Kitty Island Adventure - PlayStation 5
  • Explore a Massive World: Meet Hello Kitty and Friends across distinct biomes with more than 100 hours of adventure and affecting stories to experience. Brave Kuromi’s haunted mansion in the Spooky Swamp, unearth ancient secrets with Retsuko in fiery Mount Hothead, grow rare flowers with Wish me mell in the Merry Meadows, discover new treasures underwater in Rainbow Reef, and so much more.
  • Be Who You Want: Express yourself as an original, Sanrio-style avatar with a wide range of adorable character customization options. Select from dozens of faces, features, and body shapes, then collect hundreds of clothing items. Change your appearance at any time.
  • Craft, Create, Collect: Bake delicious recipes with Hello Kitty, brew magic potions with Kuromi, collect critters with Keroppi, learn to fish from Badtz-maru, and so much more. Share gifts and complete quests to deepen your friendship with even more beloved characters.
  • Team Up in Multiplayer: Everything is better with friends. Invite other players to your island and complete multiplayer challenges to boost each other’s stamina, solve the island’s trickiest puzzles, chase new high scores, or build beautiful vacation homes together. Multiplayer guests can even decorate their own Friendship Cabins on your island.

Set aside more time per session than you would for a quick racing match. Tactical choices and story branches reward deliberate play, and a player looking for a short diversion may prefer a different row in the table. Confirm the latest release information and supported hardware from the current listing.

For a story-led RPG: Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter

Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter is the choice for a reader who values a narrative-first RPG above novelty or competitive play. It is designed for the desire to follow characters and a continuing story over a longer arc. Pick it when the delayed game’s most important feature is sustained storytelling, not its specific combat presentation.

Because this is a continuation within its own story, check whether you want to play the preceding chapter first. That continuity question is separate from the recommendation itself: the game can satisfy a story-led preference, but the best starting point depends on how much context you want before beginning it.

Use five questions to narrow any delayed-game substitute

When none of the examples is an obvious match, answer these questions in order. The first “yes” that matters most to you should determine the replacement.

  1. Am I waiting for a specific universe? If yes, play the direct predecessor or the original entry in that series.
  2. Is the repeated activity more important than the fiction? If yes, choose by loop—racing, exploration, shooting, tactics or story-led role-playing.
  3. Do I need a solo game? Remove primarily social options and select a campaign or mission-based choice.
  4. Do I need multiplayer now? Confirm local or online support, account requirements and the number of players before buying.
  5. Which hardware can I use today? Filter by the platform you own, then verify the exact edition and region.

This process prevents a common mistake: buying a game that resembles the delayed title in marketing language but not in the activity you actually want. A player waiting for a tactical RPG may be disappointed by an action game with a similar setting; a player waiting for party racing may find a solo campaign technically excellent but socially useless.

Should you play the predecessor before the delayed sequel?

Play the predecessor when at least one of these is true:

Rank #4
Marvel's Wolverine PS5
  • Marvel’s Wolverine is a new action-packed adventure from Insomniac Games
  • Play as Wolverine and Ravage enemies with explosive brutality and unleash razor-sharp adamantium claws to deploy fast, fluid attacks and overcome impossible odds
  • An Original, Emotionally Charged Story. Beneath Wolverine’s gruff exterior and violent temperament is a man fighting for a cause greater than himself
  • A Global, Adrenaline-Fueled Journey where you slice into enemies across detailed locales such as the frosted Canadian Wilderness, the narrow streets of Tokyo, and the high and low districts of the island nation of Madripoor
  • You want the story and recurring characters to carry directly into the sequel.
  • You are unsure whether the franchise’s tone or controls suit you.
  • You want a substantial game that is available now rather than another announcement.
  • You would rather discover the series yourself than rely on a recap.

Skip or sample the predecessor when your main goal is simply to fill a particular mechanical need and the older game does not provide it. For example, someone seeking immediate social racing should not choose a single-player predecessor just because both games are popular. Likewise, a player who has already completed the original story may get more value from a genre substitute than from a full replay.

A short refresher is enough if you have played the game before. Revisit the opening, review your saved controls and read only the minimum story summary you need. The purpose is to make the wait more enjoyable, not to turn an eventual sequel into homework.

What a delay does—and does not—tell you

A delay changes the information and timing around a purchase; it is not a quality guarantee. Extra development time can allow a team to address problems, but the announcement alone does not establish the final quality, performance or feature set. Treat the revised date as the current planning information and continue to check for later changes.

A large study of 23,485 Steam games found that 48% had a delayed initial release. Among the games that delayed, the median delay was 14 days, according to Grewal, Lin, Doucet and Bezemer (2022). The statistic describes a broad Steam sample; it does not predict the length or quality of any particular console or PC project. A two-week schedule change and a multi-year postponement are both called delays, but they create very different decisions for a player with a preorder or a limited amount of free time.

Check the revised information

  • Look for the newest release date or window on the publisher’s and platform’s current listings.
  • Confirm whether your platform is still supported; a delay can coincide with a change in announced platforms.
  • Check whether the edition you selected still includes the content, physical format or access timing that influenced you.
  • Recheck regional dates, ratings and language support if you are buying from a different storefront.

Do not rely on an old trailer, cached store page or a date repeated in a social post. Release information is volatile, and the current listing is the relevant one for your purchase.

Should you cancel a preorder after a delay?

Not automatically. A delay does not by itself create a refund right. Keep the preorder only if its remaining advantages still matter to you after the new date; otherwise, use the storefront’s cancellation process and put the money toward a game you can play now.

Best Value
Ghost of Yōtei PS5
  • Stunning graphics and gameplay, explore the wild and striking lands around Mount Yotei on foot or horseback. Travel picturesque parts of northern Japan through grasslands, snowy ridges, fields of wildflowers, and more.
  • Discover renegade combat, engage in lawless katana combat and battles with adversaires. Train with various sensei as you find and learn to use each new weapon.
  • An unconventional story and journey, take in the cultural beauty of Japan, bathe in an onsen, visit shrines to pray, try Sumi-e painting, and so much more.
  • Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.

Review these conditions before deciding

  1. Revised date: Is the new timing acceptable, or would the money be tied up for too long?
  2. Payment status: Has the store charged you already, or is payment scheduled closer to release?
  3. Preload and early access: Have either started? These can affect the store’s cancellation rules.
  4. Edition value: Does the selected edition still include the physical allocation, discount or access benefit that justified preordering?
  5. Storefront policy: Read the cancellation and refund rules for the specific platform and region; policies differ.

Keep the order when the edition, discount, physical allocation or access benefit remains important and the revised timing fits your plans. Cancel when those advantages no longer outweigh the cost of waiting, when you need the funds for another game, or when the platform change makes the order unsuitable. Save the order confirmation and the store’s current policy page in case the date changes again.

A practical plan for the waiting period

Once you have chosen a substitute, give the wait a clear endpoint instead of buying several games that serve the same purpose.

  1. Write down the missing experience. Use one phrase such as “franchise story,” “social racing,” “solo shooting missions,” “exploration,” “tactical choices” or “long-form RPG narrative.”
  2. Pick one primary game. Use the matrix and select the closest match on your current platform.
  3. Set a stopping point. For a direct predecessor, that might be the main story; for a replayable racer, it might be a fixed number of sessions per week.
  4. Recheck the delayed title at meaningful moments. Check when the revised date arrives, when a platform listing changes, and before any preorder cancellation deadline—not every time an unverified rumor appears.
  5. Reassess the purchase. If the delayed title’s edition, platform or date changes again, repeat the preorder checklist rather than assuming the original decision still applies.

This approach keeps the substitute useful even if the target moves again. You are buying a game for its present value, not treating it as a temporary obligation.

Quick decisions for common reader situations

“What should I play while I wait for a delayed game?”

Start with the direct predecessor if the target is a named sequel. Otherwise, identify the loop you want and choose the matching row: Mario Kart World for social racing, Donkey Kong Bananza for exploration and destruction, Splatoon Raiders for solo shooting progression, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave for tactical multi-path storytelling, or Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter for a story-led RPG.

“What game is most similar to GTA VI?”

Grand Theft Auto V is the safest answer when “similar” means franchise continuity. It is the direct predecessor, so it teaches the series’ tone and core structure better than an unrelated open-world game. If you mean only one feature—such as driving, open-world exploration or a particular mission format—choose by that feature instead of claiming another game is a full equivalent.

“Should I play GTA V before GTA VI?”

Yes, if you want direct context or have never tried the series; sample or replay its main story if you already know it. No, if you only need a different genre loop and do not care about continuity. In either case, check the sequel’s current date and platform information before planning around it.

“What can I play on Switch 2 while a game is delayed?”

Use Mario Kart World for multiplayer racing, Donkey Kong Bananza for exploration and action, Splatoon Raiders for a solo shooter, or Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave for tactical narrative play. Choose Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter when story-led RPG progression is the priority. Confirm each title’s current Switch 2 support and regional availability before purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Should I cancel my preorder after a game delay?”

Check the revised date, payment status, preload or early-access status, edition benefits and the exact storefront rules first. Keep it only when the remaining value still justifies waiting; a delay alone neither guarantees a refund nor requires cancellation.
