On April 28, 2024, Delta creator Riley Testut previewed the emulator’s planned expansion to iPad. The tablet version was expected in Delta 1.6, with larger controller layouts and a more practical interface for iPad screens. That was a historical announcement—not a current “coming soon” release promise: later development references have moved to Delta 2.0 beta testing, while the available evidence does not independently confirm the exact public release date or current App Store status of iPad support.
Here is what the preview promised, why Apple’s policy change made it possible, and what iPad owners should know about systems, controllers, saves, ROMs, and availability.

What Riley Testut announced
Delta for iPad was described as an iPad expansion of the existing iPhone emulator, not as a separate product. Testut said it was nearing completion and planned for the next major update, Delta 1.6. The remaining work reportedly included controller skins and bug fixes.

The announcement and preview should therefore be read as a development plan. Delta 1.6 was the announced target, not a confirmed public release date. The original report appeared on April 28, 2024.

What the iPad version was meant to improve
The main benefit was space. A larger display could make touch controls less cramped, especially in landscape orientation, while giving controller skins more room for readable buttons and a less crowded layout.
- Better landscape play: The wider screen suits traditional console games and multiplayer layouts.
- A more usable Nintendo DS view: Two screens can be arranged with less severe shrinking than on an iPhone, although the best layout still depends on the game.
- More comfortable touch controls: Larger virtual buttons can be easier to see and press.
- Better physical-controller setups: An iPad on a stand, paired with a Bluetooth controller, can feel closer to a small console than a phone does.
The preview does not by itself confirm support for Stage Manager, split-screen multitasking, external-display modes, or a particular resolution. Those features should not be assumed unless confirmed for the specific released version.
Why Apple’s 2024 policy change mattered
Apple updated its App Review Guidelines in April 2024 to allow retro game console emulator apps worldwide. The revised rules also contemplated emulator apps offering game downloads, while making developers responsible for complying with Apple’s rules and applicable law.

Testut had initially deprioritized an iPad version because the plan involved AltStore PAL in the European Union, where AltStore PAL did not support iPad at that point. Apple’s worldwide App Store policy change altered the practical distribution plan.
An emulator and a game are different things. Delta simulates hardware and software environments from older consoles; it does not make copyrighted game data free to download. A ROM is the game data itself. Whether making or using a personal backup is lawful depends on the jurisdiction, ownership circumstances, and local rules. Unauthorized ROM distribution remains unauthorized even when the emulator comes from Apple’s App Store.

Which consoles Delta supported
The 2024 App Store description listed support for:
- Nintendo Entertainment System
- Super Nintendo Entertainment System
- Nintendo 64
- Game Boy and Game Boy Color
- Game Boy Advance
- Nintendo DS
The listing also said “plenty more to come,” but that was a developer roadmap statement rather than a guarantee. Delta is not a universal emulator for PlayStation, PSP, Dreamcast, GameCube, Wii, or modern consoles.
System support also does not guarantee that every game will work identically. Compatibility, performance, graphics options, controls, multiplayer behavior, and any required BIOS or firmware files can vary by platform and title.

The 2024 listing advertised support for Nintendo Switch Pro controllers, Nintendo Joy-Con controllers, Nintendo Switch Online NES, SNES, and N64 controllers, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 controllers, Xbox One S and Xbox Series X controllers, MFi controllers, and Bluetooth or wired keyboards.
That list describes the support advertised at launch and may not exactly match current iPadOS or Delta behavior. A controller can pair successfully while still requiring button remapping inside Delta. If inputs are wrong, disconnect duplicate Bluetooth devices, check which controller iPadOS recognized, and review Delta’s mapping settings.
For DS games, a controller may solve physical-button problems but cannot remove every touch-screen complication. Try alternate screen layouts and landscape orientation. Games that require microphone input may also need the relevant permission and may behave differently from conventional controller-based games.

Save states, synchronization, and other features
Delta’s listed features included save states, automatic backup save states, quick save and quick load with an external controller, cheats for supported systems, custom controller skins, fast-forward controls, hold-button functionality, game artwork, and the delta:// URL scheme.
The app also advertised Delta Sync with Google Drive and Dropbox. Sync is for user data such as games, saves, states, cheats, skins, and mappings; it is not cloud game streaming. A synced library still runs locally on the iPad, and synchronization can depend on the configured service and the platform-specific data being compatible.
Use in-game saves as well as save states when possible. If a state disappears, first check that the correct synchronization account is active and that a newly synced empty state has not overwritten a good one. Automatic backups can provide another recovery option, but they are not a substitute for maintaining a reliable in-game save.
Where Delta was available
At the time of the 2024 announcement, Delta was available free through Apple’s App Store in the United States. In the European Union, it was also distributed through AltStore PAL, an Apple-approved alternative app marketplace for eligible users. Testut’s April 17, 2024 launch post said AltStore PAL required iOS 17.4 or later at launch.
Those were 2024 regional and operating-system details. They should not be treated as a current 2026 availability guarantee. If Delta does not appear in the App Store, check the App Store account region, device and iPadOS compatibility, and whether the link you are following is outdated. Do not merge App Store installation, EU alternative distribution, and older sideloading instructions into one procedure.

The official places to check are the Delta website, Delta FAQ, and the App Store listing. The U.S. URL is region-specific, so its availability does not prove that the app is listed in every country.

The original headline was accurate for April 2024, when iPad support was being prepared for Delta 1.6. It is misleading if republished as a present-tense announcement in 2026. Riley Testut’s Patreon page later referenced a Delta 2.0b5 TestFlight update dated August 7, 2026, showing that development had moved beyond the proposed 1.6 milestone. That reference alone does not establish the exact public App Store release date or the precise current iPad feature set.
Readers should therefore verify the current App Store version and iPad compatibility before installing. A TestFlight beta reference is not the same as proof that a feature is publicly available to everyone.
Common problems
A game will not boot
Confirm that the file belongs to a supported system, is not corrupted, and is in a format Delta accepts. Delta cannot make an unsupported game platform compatible. Do not use unauthorized ROM sites as a troubleshooting shortcut.

DS controls feel awkward
Try a different screen arrangement, landscape orientation, and an external controller. A stable stand can help when one screen needs to remain visible while you interact with the other. Microphone-dependent games may require permission and may not behave like ordinary controller games.

The controller connects but buttons are wrong
Remove duplicate or previously paired controllers, reconnect the intended device, then remap its inputs in Delta. Check whether iPadOS has recognized it as the expected controller type.
Save states vanish
Keep an in-game save in addition to a save state. Check the active Google Drive or Dropbox account before enabling synchronization, and avoid allowing an empty or outdated synced state to overwrite a known-good save.
Is Delta a good fit for iPad?
Yes, if you want one Nintendo-focused emulator for NES, SNES, N64, Game Boy-family systems, and Nintendo DS, particularly when you plan to use a physical controller. The larger screen is most meaningful for DS layouts, touch-button comfort, and tabletop play.
