Verdict: Chapters 1 and 2 are worth playing for their offbeat humor, memorable characters, inventive battles, and Toby Fox’s story-focused music. Chapter 1 lays the groundwork; Chapter 2 broadens the adventure and makes the larger mystery feel more substantial. The trade-off is that the story remains in progress, so these chapters offer a compelling beginning rather than a fully resolved payoff.
What are Deltarune Chapters 1 and 2?
Deltarune is a story-led role-playing game that moves between an everyday Light World and adventures in a strange Dark World. Its battles combine turn-based commands with real-time dodging: while choosing actions, you guide a small heart through patterns of incoming projectiles. As The Washington Post explained in 2021, encounters can be resolved by winning enemies over rather than killing them (The Washington Post).
That mix gives combat a different emphasis from simply reducing an enemy’s health. Choosing how to engage with opponents is part of the game’s personality, while dodging keeps battles active even when the player is not selecting a command.

Is Chapter 2 better than Chapter 1?
They serve different purposes. Chapter 1 introduces the setting, central relationships, and the game’s connection to Undertale; its setup is a substantial part of its job. Chapter 2 builds on those foundations, widening the adventure and giving the humor and characters more room to develop. It feels like an expansion of the premise, not a replacement for the first chapter.
For a paired playthrough, the contrast is useful: the first chapter establishes why the strange world matters, and the second makes that world feel bigger. Neither closes the main story. Game8’s combined review describes the chapters as clever and charming, while judging them less emotionally affecting than Undertale. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a universal verdict (Game8).
How do the characters, humor, and world develop?
Chapter 1’s strongest contribution is its groundwork. It introduces the premise and establishes the tone rather than trying to make the opening adventure answer every larger question. Chapter 2 uses that foundation to broaden the story and its cast, and its jokes remain central to the experience rather than a break from it.
The shift between the ordinary Light World and the Dark World gives the story a useful contrast: familiar routines sit beside settings and encounters that are much stranger. That contrast helps the adventure feel playful without making the unresolved plot disappear into the background.

Turn-based choices and real-time bullet dodging make battles more hands-on than a menu-only RPG. The option to win enemies over also supports the game’s character-first approach to encounters. Chapter 2 continues the battle style introduced in Chapter 1 while giving the broader adventure more room to vary its situations.
The distinctive appeal is the combination: decide what to do, then react to the attack patterns on screen. Players looking for combat built entirely around fast action or deep tactical systems may want different things from a battle, but the chapters’ command-and-dodge structure fits their story-led design.

How important is the soundtrack?
The music does more than decorate the adventure. Nintendo World Report’s 2019 Switch review highlights how the score advances the story without intruding on it (Nintendo World Report). That understated narrative role is especially apt for a game whose opening chapter is still establishing its world and mood.
The soundtrack is also available as an optional purchase. The official help page points to Steam for the full soundtrack and Bandcamp and iTunes for individual chapter releases (DELTARUNE help). Toby Fox’s release announcement said Steam soundtrack buyers would receive tracks as new chapters were added (Toby Fox’s newsletter).

Do you need to play Undertale first?
The chapters have a relationship to Undertale, and Chapter 1 makes that connection part of its setup. Nintendo World Report’s review discusses the relationship, but these sources do not establish that prior knowledge is required to follow Chapters 1 and 2 (Nintendo World Report). If you know Undertale, you may notice the connection more readily; if you do not, the chapter’s own premise and characters are still the immediate focus.

The official download page currently distinguishes the Chapter 1 and 2 demo from the full game, which it lists as Chapters 1–5 available, with more planned as free updates. It lists PC, Mac, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 versions (DELTARUNE official download page). Toby Fox’s newsletter records the release of Chapters 1–4 on June 5, 2025, and says future chapters would be added free for owners (Toby Fox’s newsletter).
So the answer depends on what you mean by “Deltarune”: the official site offers Chapters 1 and 2 as a demo, while the current full-game release is listed separately and includes later chapters. Check the official page for the current version and platform details before downloading or buying.
How have players rated it?
On October 8, 2026, Steam showed 98% positive from 56,653 English-language user reviews (Steam). That figure reflects user reviews on Steam, not a critics’ average or a chapter-specific score; it should not be read as either.
Is there a physical Switch 2 edition?
GamesRadar reported a boxed Nintendo Switch 2 edition in a roundup published around the console’s launch (GamesRadar). That report does not establish current stock, regional availability, or a live retailer listing, so check retailers in your region if you want a physical copy.
