From Chapter 2 onward, sparing or pacifying recruitable enemies adds them to Castle Town and can unlock activities, while defeating one violently makes it Lost and blocks recruitment. Violence does provide a short-term combat reward: your party’s HP, Attack, and Magic increase for the rest of that chapter, up to a limit. The choice is therefore a trade-off between immediate power and town population, later requirements, and altered scenes.
There is no single permanent pacifist-or-violent switch for the entire game. Route outcomes are evaluated by chapter in a carried-over Completion FILE, so you can make different choices in different chapters. Chapter 1 is the exception to the recruitment system and must be understood separately.

What happens when you spare or fight enemies?
The first question is whether the enemy is recruitable. A non-recruitable encounter does not add a resident to Castle Town, while a recruitable enemy can advance a recruitment counter when you resolve the battle peacefully. The official gameplay reminder also warns that some bosses cannot be defeated by violence and some cannot be resolved nonviolently, so do not assume every battle offers both options.

| ACT, then SPARE or PACIFY | Advances recruitment from Chapter 2 onward. Some enemy types require several successful resolutions before they are fully recruited. | Requires the correct enemy-specific ACT, a 100% MERCY state or a TIRED state, and sometimes enough TP for PACIFY. | Can satisfy later recruit requirements, add residents and unlock chapter-specific activities. |
| FIGHT and defeat a recruitable enemy | The enemy becomes Lost. It cannot be recruited, even if it had already joined your town earlier. | Raises party HP, Attack and Magic for the rest of the current chapter, up to the game’s limit. | Lost recruits and repeated violent encounters can change later chapter scenes. |
The peaceful option is not merely cosmetic. Recruitment fills Castle Town, and the official reminder says that a livelier town may unlock activities. The violent option is not purely a failure state either: its stat increase can make the remainder of a chapter easier. Decide according to whether you value the immediate boost or the recruit and story consequences.

How recruitment works in a battle
Only recruitable enemies count
Recruitment applies to specific enemy types, not to every Darkner you encounter. When a battle contains a recruitable type, the game tracks progress for that type. Some types need to be spared more than once before the recruit is complete, and the game provides progress feedback rather than requiring you to guess.
Raise MERCY, then SPARE
- Use the enemy’s appropriate ACT options until its MERCY reaches 100%.
- Choose SPARE on that enemy.
- Confirm that the encounter’s recruitment feedback advances, especially when the type requires multiple successful spares.
A target ready for SPARE is marked with a yellow name and a star. The marker is the game’s confirmation that the current state can be resolved without a violent defeat.
Make the enemy TIRED, then PACIFY
- Use ACT options that make the target TIRED.
- Open Ralsei’s spell menu and select PACIFY.
- Make sure the party has at least 16% TP; PACIFY cannot be used below that threshold.
A PACIFY-ready target is marked with a blue name and “Zz.” In documented situations, the ACT that creates the required state and the SPARE or PACIFY command can resolve on the same turn. You do not always need to spend an extra round after setting up the target.
Use the spell-menu ACTs added in Chapter 2
Starting in the middle of Chapter 2, Susie and Ralsei gain a single ACT through their spell menus against each enemy. The official guide specifically presents these options as a way to shorten battles. They do not remove the need to read the enemy’s state: use the available option, then check whether the target is ready for SPARE or PACIFY.

What a violent defeat gives you—and what it costs
The temporary stat benefit
When you defeat enemies violently, the game increases your party’s HP, Attack and Magic for the remainder of that chapter. The increase is capped, so continuing to defeat enemies does not provide an unlimited escalation. This is the principal mechanical reason to choose violence: it can improve survivability and damage during the chapter in which you make the choice.

Recruitable enemies become Lost
If the defeated enemy is recruitable, the long-term cost is permanent for that Completion FILE: the enemy is marked Lost and recruitment is blocked. This also applies to an enemy that had been recruited previously. A later peaceful battle does not restore a recruit after a violent defeat has made it Lost.

Some bosses cannot be defeated by violence, and some cannot be resolved nonviolently. The pacifist-versus-violent comparison therefore applies to encounters where the game supports a meaningful choice, particularly recruitable enemies. Treating every boss as another recruit decision can lead you to expect a result the battle does not allow.
Do not automatically equate every unusual route with ordinary FIGHT choices
Snowgrave or other Weird Route interactions have their own conditions and outcomes. The documented recruit rules for the standard violent route should not be assumed to describe every Weird Route consequence. If you are following a special route, check that route’s specific requirements instead of treating it as a normal sequence of violent defeats.
Why Chapter 1 is different
Chapter 1 does not yet use the later chapters’ recruitment mechanic. Enemies from Chapter 1 are recruited by default when Chapter 2 begins, so you are not building the Castle Town roster through Chapter 1 spare counters in the same way.
The Chapter 1 pacifist outcome
In the pacifist outcome, the Card Kingdom Darkners help overthrow King. The party can leave that chapter with the Darkners’ support and the route’s associated ending conditions.

In the violent outcome, King is put to sleep and the party flees without returning to Card Castle to say goodbye. Route references describe this as a distinct ending condition rather than simply a lower recruitment total.

Apologies can matter
Community-maintained route references describe apology opportunities involving certain Rudinn or Hathy characters. If no other Darkners were defeated violently, and the stated conditions for the encounter are met, an apology can restore a pacifist Chapter 1 result. That is conditional: an apology does not erase every violent action or guarantee a pacifist outcome after other requirements have been broken.
Ralsei’s Chapter 1 reminder captures the intended principle: “If we SPARE all the enemies we meet, we’ll never have to FIGHT!” The later recruit system makes that principle concrete in Castle Town, but Chapter 1’s automatic carry-over means its rules are not identical to Chapters 2 and beyond.
Chapter 2: the clearest recruitment payoff
From Chapter 2 onward, recruitment directly changes Castle Town. More residents make the town livelier, and full recruitment in Chapter 2 has named rewards beyond appearance changes.
Recruit everyone for the Chapter 2 activities
Recruiting every required Chapter 2 enemy unlocks the Party Dojo’s “Ch2 All Stars” challenge and Sweet Cap’n Cakes’s Music Room. It also changes an item that Seam sells. These are concrete reasons to check the recruit counters rather than assuming that a nearly complete roster is equivalent to a complete one.
Partial recruitment still matters
You do not need a perfect Chapter 2 roster for every town change. Each successful recruit adds to the population, while the named activities above require the complete Chapter 2 recruitment condition. If one enemy type is missing, use the recruit counter to identify the gap before starting another chapter.
Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 requirements
Repairing Tenna in Chapter 4
A specific Chapter 3 condition carries into Chapter 4: you must recruit Pippins and Shadowguys, and you must not lose any Chapter 3 recruits through violence. “Mostly peaceful” is not enough for this requirement. One violent defeat of a Chapter 3 recruit can prevent Tenna from being repaired.

The Chapter 4 Dark Sanctuary scene
On a pacifist Chapter 4 route, recruiting at least one Darkner from the Dark Sanctuaries leads to Darkners catching Jackenstein when he falls in the 3rd Sanctuary. This is a chapter-specific scene condition, not a general promise that every recruit changes every scene.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy these gates are easy to miss
The consequences are separated by a chapter transition. A violent choice in Chapter 3 may feel like a temporary stat decision at the time, but the Lost status is checked later when Chapter 4’s conditions are evaluated. If you care about a named scene or repair outcome, preserve the relevant recruits before leaving the chapter.
Routes are chapter-specific, not one permanent game-wide label
A carried-over Completion FILE can contain a pacifist Chapter 2, a violent Chapter 3 and a different Chapter 4 outcome. Calling the entire file “the pacifist route” or “the violent route” can hide the fact that the game evaluates choices by chapter.
This structure gives you flexibility and creates planning risks:
- You can choose nonviolence in one chapter without being forced to repeat it in every later chapter.
- A violent defeat still has consequences in the chapter where it occurs and for any later requirement that checks its Lost status.
- A clean record in an earlier chapter does not repair a recruit lost later.
- For a named outcome, follow that outcome’s exact chapter requirements rather than relying on a broad route label.
How to check whether you are still on track
The game provides an in-game way to verify recruitment near the end of each chapter. Use the Recruits menu and the counters at the relevant save point or chapter check location.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Open the Recruits menu at a save point that exposes the chapter’s recruitment information.
- Review the counter for each recruitable enemy type, not just the overall population.
- Look for a type that has not reached its required recruitment total.
- If you are pursuing a named later event, compare your roster with that event’s specific requirement: for example, the Chapter 3 Pippins-and-Shadowguys condition also requires that no Chapter 3 recruit was lost through violence.
- Check again near the chapter’s end, when the game provides the relevant completion confirmation.
Do not infer “all recruited” from Castle Town’s general appearance alone. The counters are the reliable check for individual enemy types and chapter completion.

Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Practical route plans
If you want the safest recruitment file
- Use enemy-specific ACTs rather than FIGHT against every recruitable enemy.
- Reach 100% MERCY and SPARE, or make the enemy TIRED and use PACIFY with at least 16% TP.
- Read the yellow-star or blue-“Zz” marker before ending the encounter.
- Check the recruit counters before the chapter ends.
- Pay special attention to Chapter 3: recruit Pippins and Shadowguys and lose no Chapter 3 recruit if Tenna’s repair matters to you.
If you want the combat boost but still care about selected recruits
Violence raises HP, Attack and Magic only for the current chapter and only up to the cap. Use it knowingly in encounters whose recruits and later scenes do not matter to your plan. Before choosing FIGHT, verify whether the enemy is recruitable and whether a later chapter checks that recruit. This selective approach can preserve a target roster while accepting a limited number of Lost enemies.
If you are deliberately following a violent chapter
Expect recruitable enemies defeated by violence to become Lost, and use the resulting stat increase during that chapter. At the chapter transition, review the consequences rather than assuming the file has become a single all-game violent route. Later scenes can depend on which specific recruits were lost and whether violent encounters were repeated.
Troubleshooting common mistakes
“I spared the enemy, but it was not recruited.”
Confirm that the enemy was recruitable, that you used the correct ACT, and that you completed the required number of successful resolutions for that enemy type. A single spare may advance a counter without completing recruitment.
“The enemy was recruited before, but it is now Lost.”
A later violent defeat overrides the earlier recruitment for that enemy. The Lost status blocks recruitment even when the character had previously joined Castle Town.
“I used PACIFY, but nothing happened.”
Check that the target was TIRED, that Ralsei had at least 16% TP, and that the target displayed the blue name and “Zz” marker. PACIFY is not a replacement for the setup step.
“I fought a boss and expected a recruit consequence.”
Recruitment applies to recruitable enemies, and the official reminder notes that some bosses lack one of the two resolution paths. Check the battle’s actual rules instead of applying the ordinary recruit table.
“I am playing a different route and the standard advice does not match.”
Weird Route or Snowgrave-specific conditions should be treated separately from ordinary FIGHT violence. Use the requirements for that route and chapter rather than assuming every recruit interaction is identical.
The practical rule
For recruitable enemies in Chapters 2 and later, peaceful resolution is the only way to build the roster: use ACT to reach the required state, then SPARE or PACIFY. Fighting gives a capped, chapter-long stat increase but turns that recruit Lost and may close later activities or scenes. Chapter 1 carries enemies forward automatically, and every later chapter should be evaluated on its own terms.
