Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles is best suited to fans who want a playable retelling of the anime with expressive presentation and accessible arena combat. Reviews praise its visual fidelity, character appeal, and dramatic battles, while noting that exploration can slow the story, and that versus and online play are less compelling than the main adventure. It is an anime-focused arena fighter, not a deep traditional fighting game.
What reviewers like about The Hinokami Chronicles
Anime-faithful presentation
Critic reviews highlight the game’s close resemblance to the anime, familiar characters, and recreations of major story moments. SEGA likewise emphasizes anime-style visuals and performances from the English and Japanese voice casts on its official game page; that is the publisher’s description, not an independent performance assessment.
Energetic, approachable combat
Reviewers describe the combat as accessible and satisfying, with flashy attacks and boss encounters helping deliver the spectacle expected from the series. Meristation’s October 13, 2021 review also praised the presentation, combat, and boss fights. These are critical impressions rather than claims that the game offers extensive competitive-fighting depth.
What the game includes
SEGA says the story follows Tanjiro Kamado through the Unwavering Resolve and Mugen Train arcs. The game has an Adventure Mode and a Versus Mode, with Versus supporting two-on-two matchups. The official FAQ also says six playable characters were added in free post-launch updates; those additions require the latest game patch. See SEGA’s FAQ for the publisher’s content details.
#1 Best Overall
- It is the Taisho Period in Japan; Tanjiro, a kindhearted boy who sells charcoal for a living, finds his family slaughtered by a demon
- Tanjiro resolves to become a “demon slayer” so that he can turn his sister back into a human and kill the demon that massacred his family
- Follow Tanjiro through the story from the “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba” anime as he faces demons in order to turn his sister Nezuko, who has become a demon, back into a human
- Master the multitude of spectacular skills of a wide roster of characters from the anime, including Tanjiro and Nezuko, to overcome challengers in head-to-head battle, locally and online
The story mode is the central draw for players who want to revisit key anime events. Reviewers’ main reservation about its pacing is that exploration sections can interrupt the momentum between dramatic scenes and battles. Players looking primarily for a brisk sequence of fights may find those stretches less engaging.
Where the reviews raise concerns
Limited versus and online appeal
Some critics find the versus component simple or limited compared with the story mode. Reviews also point to online functionality as an area for improvement. That criticism matters most to buyers seeking a long-term competitive fighter; it is less central if the goal is a single-player anime adventure.
Rank #2
- Take Up the Sword Once Again - Play as Tanjiro Kamado and face off against evil demons in key moments from the “Entertainment District Arc,” “Swordsmith Village Arc,” and “Hashira Training Arc” with breathtaking visuals and combat.
- The Hashira Unite - A host of new arrivals added to the roster, with over 40 playable characters to choose from including the nine Hashira, the highest rank of the Demon Slayer Corps.
- More Ways to Play - Expanded Single Player content allows you to relive the story in a brand-new way.
Familiar systems and platform-specific experience
Some reviews describe the combat systems as familiar from other anime arena fighters. Meristation’s review was based on PS4 and said it could not assess the PS5 version. It also observed that smoother performance and 60 frames per second would benefit a fighting game, but did not establish a universal measured frame-rate result. Platform performance should not be inferred from that single review.
Which platform or edition should you choose?
SEGA lists versions for PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Nintendo Switch. Its FAQ says core game content does not differ between platforms, although editions may include different bonuses. The Switch release followed the original platform launch. Check SEGA’s product information and the specific store listing for the exact platform, edition contents, and availability before buying.
Rank #3
- Exhilarating Arena Battles - Master the multitude of spectacular skills of a wide roster of characters from the anime, including Tanjiro and Nezuko, to overcome challengers in head-to-head battle, locally and online.
- Moving Drama - Take up the sword of Tanjiro Kamado and guide his journey to become a Demon Slayer and turn his sister Nezuko back into a human.
- Thrilling Boss Battles - Action and drama reach their peak in specially designed battles against powerful demons that will test Tanjiro's mettle.
- Original Anime Voice Cast - The original English and Japanese casts of the anime return to bring their authentic portrayals to the game.
- Choose by story interest: The game covers the Unwavering Resolve and Mugen Train arcs, making familiarity with those events part of its appeal.
- Choose by play style: Expect accessible, showy arena combat rather than the depth of a specialist competitive fighter.
- Choose by multiplayer priorities: Versus offers two-on-two matchups, but reviews characterize the mode as limited, and online play requires the latest patch.
- Choose by edition extras: Physical, standard digital, and digital deluxe editions can have different bonuses. Confirm what the exact listing includes.
- Check online requirements: SEGA says online play on PlayStation and Xbox requires the relevant platform subscription, in addition to the latest patch.
SEGA’s platform information lists supported systems. Upgrade conditions and bonus availability can be platform-specific, so do not assume an edition’s extras or upgrade path applies across systems.

On October 27, 2021, SEGA reported more than one million units shipped worldwide. The company defined that figure as physical copies shipped, including limited editions, plus digital copies sold. It is a milestone reported at that date, not a current sales total. The same announcement said volumes 1–23 of the Demon Slayer manga had sold more than 150 million copies; that is franchise context, not game sales. SEGA’s announcement gives the dated figures.

Review verdict
The Hinokami Chronicles is most appealing as a visually faithful, fan-oriented retelling with accessible combat and memorable boss encounters. Its weaker fit is for players who want elaborate exploration, a deep versus mode, or a proven high-performance experience across every platform. If the anime story and spectacle are the priority, the reviews point to a solid match; if competitive depth is the priority, the reported limitations are a meaningful reason to look elsewhere.
