There is no single best weapon for every Demon’s Souls character. Choose one that fits your invested stats, the enemy’s damage weaknesses, and the moveset you like using. For a heavy Strength build, consider the Dragon Bone Smasher; Dexterity characters can add the Compound Long Bow’s Sticky path for ranged damage; and Faith-focused characters may favor the Large Sword of Moonlight. Upgrade materials are limited, so match the weapon and its upgrade path to your build before committing.
How to choose a weapon in Demon’s Souls
Weapon rankings make little sense without a character build and a target. Compare a weapon’s base damage and scaling against your current stats, then consider its damage type, reach, moveset, weight, requirements, and how difficult it is to acquire. The Demon’s Souls English Wiki weapon reference cautions that a weapon with stronger scaling can deal less damage than one with higher base damage until the relevant stat is sufficiently developed.
- Match scaling to your stats: Scaling rewards investment in a particular attribute; it does not guarantee high damage on a character with low points in that stat.
- Match damage type to the enemy: Blunt, piercing, physical, and magic damage can perform differently against different enemies and areas.
- Choose a workable moveset: Reach and attack speed matter in practice. A slow weapon that hits hard may suit deliberate, spaced attacks better than repeated close-range swings.
- Check requirements and weight: A weapon can be powerful on paper but awkward if you do not meet its stat requirements or want to carry its weight.
Best weapon choices by build and situation
Strength: Dragon Bone Smasher
The Dragon Bone Smasher is a high-impact Strength option with high base damage and B Strength scaling. The weapon reference lists 280 + 280 physical attack at 99 Strength; that is a game-data figure for the stated stat, not a promise of the same output at lower Strength. The weapon weighs 20 units and has a listed 30 Strength requirement. Two-handing effectively multiplies Strength by 1.5 for meeting requirements, but its weight and slow, heavy attacks still call for deliberate spacing rather than straight-sword-style combos. See the Dragon Bone Smasher reference for its attributes and acquisition details.

It is not an early, unconditional recommendation: obtaining it is gated by Pure White World Tendency in Stonefang. It can be reached by entering 2-3 with that tendency or after defeating the Dragon God. If you are willing to manage the tendency requirement and its weight, it is a strong fit for a character built to land heavy hits.
Dexterity and ranged support: Compound Long Bow
The Compound Long Bow is a useful ranged choice for a Dexterity-focused character, rather than a melee weapon recommendation. Find it near a Skeleton Archer in 4-1, or seek drops from Skeleton Archers in 4-2. Its Sticky (also called Viscous) upgrade path greatly increases Dexterity bonus, reduces Strength bonus, and adds 5 range. The path branches from +3 using Spiderstone. The Compound Long Bow reference says its damage is strongest among the bow upgrades it compares as Dexterity approaches roughly 30; this is a comparison within those upgrade options, not a claim that it is best for every character or bow use. Heavy or White Arrows are noted as damage options.
Faith and magic damage: Large Sword of Moonlight
The Large Sword of Moonlight deals magic damage and has S Faith scaling, making it a natural candidate for a Faith-focused build. It is found in the slug nest in Valley of Defilement 5-2. At +5 with maximum stats, the reference lists 100 + 255 magical attack. It can also block 80% of magic damage on a successful block. These are weapon-reference figures, not independent performance tests. The Large Sword of Moonlight reference covers its stats; bear in mind that upgrading it uses Colorless Demon Souls.

Matchup choice: Blessed Mace
A Blessed Mace +5 shows why the best choice can change by area. The upgrade guide notes that Silver Skeletons in Shrine of Storms are weak to its blunt and magic damage, while piercing attacks may be preferable against enemies in Stonefang Tunnel. Treat it as a specialized matchup option, not a universal winner. The weapon-upgrade guide includes these damage-type examples.

Pick the upgrade path to suit your build before spending scarce materials. Blacksmith Boldwin is in the Nexus and handles limited, basic upgrade paths. Blacksmith Ed is in Stonefang Tunnel 2-1. Ed can perform advanced Demon’s Soul and Colorless Demon Soul upgrades after he accepts the Red Hot Demon’s Soul from Flamelurker in 2-2.

Basic Hardstone and Sharpstone paths cap at +10; other paths cap at +5, according to the upgrade guide. The page dates matter: its caps and material guidance come from a 2016 revision, while the Dragon Bone Smasher’s 99-Strength figure comes from a 2019 page revision and the Compound Long Bow’s Sticky-path range from a 2020 revision. These are reference figures, not a fresh balance test.

- Choose the Sticky Compound Long Bow if you want Dexterity-scaling ranged support and can invest in its upgrade path.
- Choose Large Sword of Moonlight if your build invests in Faith and you want magic damage, while accounting for its Colorless Demon Soul upgrades.
- Carry a matchup option such as a blunt-and-magic Blessed Mace when an area’s enemies make that damage combination useful.
