Reviews praise that tactical flexibility, its vivid presentation and its offbeat cast; the main reservations are repetitive early battles, relationship systems that could go deeper, and launch-era PC and Steam Deck problems that should not be assumed to affect every current version.
What is Demonschool?
Developed by Necrosoft Games and published by Ysbryd Games, Demonschool is a tactics RPG released on November 19, 2025. It follows demon hunter Faye and her companions as they confront monsters on a mysterious island while dealing with university life. The game blends tactical battles with island exploration, side quests, minigames, class scheduling and relationships with a cast of characters. Necrosoft describes it as an RPG “in which motion equals action”; the official game factsheet explains how movement underpins its battles.

Its presentation combines 2D character sprites with 3D environments and effects. The developer cites 1970s Italian horror lighting and color as visual influences, alongside manga and illustration horror influences for character art. The soundtrack uses synths, choral sounds and fretless bass. These are the studio’s stated inspirations, rather than a promise that the game follows any one specific horror tradition.

Combat is turn-based, but its key distinction is the planning phase: you plot character movement, can rewind and revise it, and then resolve the team’s planned actions together. A path can produce different actions according to what a character encounters, such as striking an enemy, moving an object or dashing. Positioning, combos and status effects make each turn a small tactical problem rather than a sequence of isolated attacks. GamesRadar+’s review also describes the two-phase structure and its approachable rules.
#1 Best Overall
Outside battle, you explore the island, take on side activities, set a school schedule to develop characters, recruit party members and build relationships. Steam and the developer identify 15 characters for recruitment or relationship content. That mix gives the game a social and school-life layer, though reviewers differ on how rewarding its relationship systems are.
What do Demonschool reviews praise?
The strongest shared point is the combat’s capacity for experimentation. Being able to plan, test a movement route, rewind and adjust gives players room to solve encounters creatively. Reviewers also highlight the distinctive visual style and the characterful world surrounding those battles.

- PC Gamer: Mollie Taylor scored the game 86 in a review published November 18, 2025, praising its strategic combat and cast. Taylor’s verdict was: “Devilishly moreish and hard to put down, only failed by performance snags and the absence of key quality-of-life features.”
- Nintendo Life: Jess Elizabeth Reed awarded the Switch version 8/10, highlighting its accessible tactical skill set, visual style and content.
- GamesRadar+: Its review explains how the planning and action phases make the tactical rules approachable.
What are the main criticisms?
Nintendo Life says combat can become tedious during the first few hours and that the relationship-building could have more depth. Those drawbacks matter most if you want frequent changes in encounter structure or a particularly elaborate social-simulation layer; the tactical planning itself is the feature reviewers most consistently praise.
PC Gamer’s Taylor reported stability problems on Steam Deck in effects-heavy situations, occasional returns to the title screen, and some obtuse systems. Taylor also noted narrative beats appearing out of order through friendship quests. These are reviewer observations from a launch-era build, not proof that every platform or later-patched version has the same issues.
Demonschool performance on Switch and Steam Deck
The platform-specific review reports are different, but they are not a controlled comparison. Nintendo Life reviewed the North American Switch eShop version in handheld and undocked modes and reported no lag or major issues, with short waits before battles. PC Gamer reviewed on a PC with an RTX 3070, Ryzen 9 3900XT and 32GB of RAM, and played roughly two-thirds of the 55-hour run on Steam Deck; Taylor reported performance and stability snags and eventually streamed the game from PC to Deck.
That evidence supports a cautious version-by-version decision, not a definitive claim that Switch is better than PC or that Steam Deck performance is uniformly poor. If you are choosing based on portability, check current player reports for your specific device and the game’s current build. The reviews above describe their own review conditions and do not establish the state of every platform today.

The game also has a digital Art of Demonschool add-on. Nintendo Brazil describes it as including an art book and design book, with over 100 pages of concept art in the art book. That digital add-on is not evidence of a printed art book or a physical soundtrack.
How do the store ratings look?
As of October 8, 2026, Steam displayed 92% positive from 855 total user reviews and 84% positive from 25 recent reviews. The PlayStation Store displayed 4.47 out of 5 from 236 ratings. These are changing storefront user-rating snapshots, not professional critic aggregates; counts and percentages may differ when you check them.
Who should play Demonschool?
Demonschool is a strong candidate if you enjoy working through tactical puzzles, adjusting a team’s positioning and trying different approaches before committing to a turn. Its island-university setting, stylized horror-comedy tone and character-focused activities will appeal if you want more than battles alone.

It may be a less comfortable fit if repeated encounters quickly wear on you, you expect relationship systems to have substantial depth, or you are buying specifically for Steam Deck and need confident current performance evidence. For that last point, the launch-era review is a reason to verify the present build rather than a verdict on every current setup.
