Denshattack! review: the stylish train-trick ride is built for replay

Verdict: Denshattack! turns a train into a trick machine and gets its best ideas from momentum, timing and route mastery. Its authored courses, alternate lines and score challenges make repeated runs compelling, but players expecting an open railway sandbox or perfectly explained hazards may find the fixed routes restrictive. It is a strong fit for arcade score chasers who enjoy learning a stage; it is a less certain recommendation for anyone seeking realistic train handling or unrestricted exploration.

What Denshattack! is

Denshattack! is an arcade action game in which the vehicle is also the stunt performer. You ride a customizable train through a stylized, corporate-controlled Japan, launching it into ollies, kickflips, wall-jumps and grinds, then linking those actions into higher scores. The premise sounds like a joke until the first successful line comes together: the train’s mass gives every jump a visible sense of commitment, while rails, walls and trackside objects become parts of a trick route.

The campaign follows an uprising against the Miraidō corporation. Official descriptions place the journey in Kyushu, Osaka, Tokyo and Hokkaido, with rival gangs, rebels and escalating bosses shaping the fictional conflict. The setting is colourful and deliberately heightened rather than a simulation of contemporary Japan. Its purpose is to provide a succession of dramatic places to ride and opponents to beat, not a historically grounded railway tour.

Why a train can support trick gameplay

The central design challenge is that a train normally follows a track. Denshattack! treats that limitation as the foundation of its movement system rather than trying to disguise it. You are not freely steering across a large skatepark; you are timing jumps, transfers and grinds along a planned railway line while deciding which opportunities to take.

David Jaumandreu, Undercoders’ studio and game director, said the initial idea came from playing with a small Japanese toy train as though it could jump obstacles. He described the intended feel as a meeting point between the movement and expression of games such as Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater and SSX, with Jet Set Radio and Sonic among the other influences. His explanation is important because it clarifies what the game is trying to optimize: momentum, rhythm and creative timing on a railway, not unrestricted navigation.

“In some ways a train is a perfect match for trick gameplay because it already has something you are always looking for: momentum.” — David Jaumandreu, Studio and Game Director, Undercoders, Xbox Wire, July 15, 2026

That momentum-first approach gives the tricks a different texture from a human skater’s. The train enters an obstacle with a direction and speed that matter, and the track itself continually presents the next decision. When the line works, a jump into a wall-jump, a landing on a rail and a follow-up grind feel like one continuous piece of choreography. The payoff is visual as much as numerical: a machine that should be heavy and inflexible is suddenly expressive.

How the courses and scoring loop work

TheSixthAxis reviewer Miguel Moran describes Denshattack! as a score chaser on guided routes rather than a collection of open-ended skateparks. Stages run from a defined start to a defined finish, but they are not necessarily single-lane corridors. Divergent paths, secret rails and optional lines give you reasons to look beyond the safest route.

First runs are about reaching the finish

On an initial attempt, the sensible objective is simply to read the course. You learn where the route bends, which surfaces can be used for tricks and where the game places hazards or transitions. Because the stage is authored, memory becomes an advantage: a mistake near the end teaches you something useful for the next run instead of resetting an unknowable world.

Later runs target scores, times and challenges

Once the route is familiar, the game asks a different question: can you take a faster or more technical line without breaking your sequence? TheSixthAxis highlights incentives to replay stages for time, trick scores and challenge completion. Alternate paths and hidden rails turn a finished level into a route-planning problem. You are comparing lines, not merely repeating the same trip at higher speed.

Why the structure suits score chasers

A fixed course gives every run a shared reference point. You can identify the exact corner where a jump was too early, the rail you skipped or the section where a safer line cost too much time. That makes improvement legible. The trade-off is that players who want to wander, stop and experiment away from an authored sequence will encounter the game’s boundaries quickly.

Play style What Denshattack! offers Likely friction
Score improvement Repeatable routes, trick strings, time goals and challenges Progress depends on learning set courses rather than creating a freeform park
Exploration Route choices, divergent lines and secret rails Exploration remains inside a start-to-finish stage
Set-piece play Authored scenery, bosses and a campaign journey across Japan Advancing the story can compete with the urge to perfect an earlier stage
Simulation-minded train play A train’s momentum is central to the trick fantasy The game is an arcade stunt title, not a railway operations simulator

Where the reviews agree—and where they do not

The available critical evidence comes from two individual reviews, so it should not be read as a consensus score or a representative survey of players. Both accounts make the unusual premise clear, but they emphasize different parts of the experience.

TheSixthAxis: strong gameplay and replay pull

In a July 27, 2026 review, Miguel Moran praises the gameplay and frames the game as a Tony Hawk-style score chaser adapted to guided railway routes. He points to divergent paths, secret rails and the motivation to return for better times, larger trick scores and completed challenges. His summary is that the story is serviceable while the play itself is the main attraction. The memorable question from his review captures the novelty: what other game lets you do kickflips, wall-jumps and ollies as a literal train?

PC Gamer: constraint, hazards and unclear rules

A July 15, 2026 PC Gamer review is more critical. It argues that tightly directed sequences, sudden hazards and rules that can feel inconsistent reduce the sense of player freedom. It also questions how much the train premise changes the handling, rather than merely changing the appearance of a conventional trick game. That is one reviewer’s experience, not proof that every player will encounter the same problems, but it identifies the most important risk for a purchase: a course can feel less like a creative playground and more like a sequence you must obey.

How to interpret the disagreement

The two perspectives are compatible once you separate preferred play styles. If you enjoy repeating a known route until a cleaner line emerges, the same direction that frustrates an exploratory player can make the game satisfying. If you expect broad steering freedom, generous improvisation and rules that are immediately obvious, the guided design and abrupt hazards may wear you down. Neither review establishes universal performance, a review average or a common completion time.

The setting and campaign premise

Denshattack! presents a colourful dystopia in which a corporation controls society and abandoned rail lines become a place for resistance. The official story pitch describes people pushed out of society expressing themselves through an outlawed sport and reclaiming those lines; that is Jaumandreu’s explanation of the game’s intent. The campaign’s geography moves from Kyushu through major cities such as Osaka and Tokyo and onward to Hokkaido, with rival gangs and bosses escalating the conflict.

This framing gives the route progression a reason to exist. Each new location can introduce a different visual identity and a new confrontation while preserving the same trick vocabulary. Do not expect a deeply branching political narrative: the available review coverage calls the story serviceable, with the score-and-movement systems carrying most of the weight.

Is Denshattack! a good fit for you?

Choose it if you like

  • Arcade games where a run improves through memorization, timing and experimentation.
  • Chasing higher scores, faster times and challenge completion after the campaign has shown you a stage.
  • Stylized, high-energy settings and a premise that commits fully to its central joke.
  • Games that turn a limitation—in this case, a train’s dependence on rails—into a rhythm and route puzzle.

Think twice if you want

  • An open railway playground where you can steer anywhere, stop freely or invent your own course.
  • Simulation-like train handling, signaling, scheduling or realistic operations.
  • Hazards and interactions that are always telegraphed in the same way.
  • A story-driven campaign in which narrative choices matter more than replaying levels.

The clearest buying decision is therefore about tolerance for authored structure. Denshattack! is not trying to be a train simulator with optional tricks. It is an arcade trick game whose tracks happen to be the rails of a train, and its value rises sharply if you enjoy refining a line after the first clear.

Language and accessibility details to check

The Switch 2 listing names Japanese, English, French, German, Spanish, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese and Traditional Chinese among its supported languages. The PlayStation 5 listing separates voice from screen language: it specifies English and Japanese voice tracks and a broader set of screen languages, while noting that subtitles cover the main story and main characters only. That distinction matters if you need subtitles for every incidental line rather than the principal narrative.

How to get more from a first playthrough

Read the route before chasing a record

Use the opening runs to identify the course’s rhythm: where the track invites a jump, where a wall or rail offers a trick opportunity and where a hazard interrupts the line. Trying to maximize every sequence immediately makes it harder to tell whether a miss came from timing or from choosing the wrong route.

Separate safe clears from score attempts

Keep one mental plan for reaching the finish and another for improving a result. A reliable line teaches you the stage; a riskier line tests whether a shortcut, secret rail or longer trick string is worth the danger. This approach fits the game’s stated emphasis on replay rather than treating a first clear as the end of a level.

Use alternate paths as experiments

When a stage branches, compare the lines on separate attempts instead of trying to judge them while recovering from a mistake. One route may favour time, another may provide more space for tricks, and a hidden rail may matter only for a challenge. The point is not that one path is always best, but that the authored course gives you a stable laboratory for testing choices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expect to learn hazards through repetition

PC Gamer’s criticism of sudden hazards and unclear rules is a warning to approach failures diagnostically. If an obstacle feels inconsistent, replay the same section and watch what changes: your speed, your approach angle or the route itself. Record the condition mentally before committing to a high-score run. This will not remove every frustration, but it turns an apparently random failure into a question you can investigate.

Decide whether the premise is enough for you

The train is not merely a cosmetic swap in the marketing pitch; momentum and the fixed railway are the design constraints around which the game is built. Even so, players who need the vehicle’s identity to produce simulation-depth handling may find the arcade interpretation too light. Buy for the trick-and-route loop, not for a realistic railway model.

Release-date and price caveats

Nintendo and PlayStation identify July 15, 2026 as the release date, while Xbox Wire reports that the Xbox versions launched that day and Steam lists the same date for Windows PC. Prices, discounts, downloadable content and subscription inclusion are volatile and regional. The PlayStation page displayed US-dollar pricing and a time-limited offer when checked, but that offer should not be treated as a current price. Confirm the live store page for your platform before purchase.

Final assessment

Denshattack! earns attention because its core idea is mechanically legible: a train has momentum, tracks provide a route and tricks turn that route into a score opportunity. The authored stages, alternate lines and challenge goals give the concept a reason to exist beyond a novelty screenshot. For a player who enjoys replaying a course until the timing clicks, that structure can be the entire appeal.

The same design creates its limits. You do not receive an open-ended railway playground, and one reviewer found the directed sequences, abrupt hazards and unclear rules frustrating. The train also serves an arcade handling model rather than a detailed simulation. Those are not minor caveats; they determine whether the game feels focused or constrained.

On the evidence available, Denshattack! is best approached as a stylish, replay-oriented trick game with a train-shaped control problem. It is a worthwhile choice for score chasers who enjoy authored routes and a riskier recommendation for explorers, simulation fans or anyone who needs every rule explained before attempting a run.
