Denshattack! review: what to know about its train-trick arcade ride

Denshattack! turns a train into a skateboard and lays its tracks across a stylized dystopian Japan. That hook is genuinely unusual, and the game has the scale of a substantial arcade campaign: Undercoders’ launch announcement cites more than 60 levels, eight regions and all 46 prefectures. The important qualification is that the central idea depends on handling that feels predictable. In a July 15, 2026 review, PC Gamer’s Kerry Brunskill scored the game 63 and argued that inconsistent train behavior, changing stage rules and heavily scripted sequences can work against the freedom the premise promises. The result is a striking, highly specific action platformer whose appeal will depend on how much you enjoy learning route patterns and chasing trick scores when the game, rather than a conventional skatepark, sets the terms.

What Denshattack! actually is

Denshattack! is a single-player action platformer and arcade game from Undercoders. You control a customizable, gravity-defying train, not a human skater or a railway operator. The train can ollie, kickflip, grind and chain combos while it races through routes inspired by Japanese cities, countryside, volcanoes and oceans. The campaign also includes rival gangs, encounters with the Miraidō corporation, boss stages and train customization.

This is best understood as trick-focused route action, not as a train simulator with occasional stunts. The tracks determine where you can go, and your job is to read their shapes, hit timing windows and turn movement into score. The game’s unusual fantasy comes from making railway infrastructure function as a skatepark.

The design idea: railway tracks as a skatepark

Studio and Game Director David Jaumandreu describes the core challenge as making a train feel heavy while still allowing impossible tricks. In an Xbox Wire interview published July 15, 2026, he put the design goal this way: “The railway tracks became our skatepark. Instead of asking players to freely steer everywhere, we wanted them to think about timing, rhythm and creativity.”

That statement explains why Denshattack! is built around route reading rather than free-roaming movement. A conventional skateboarding game gives you open space to set up a trick. Denshattack! gives you rails, ramps, junctions and scripted scenery, then asks you to improvise inside those boundaries. A successful run is therefore a combination of three skills:

  • Timing: launching, landing and grinding at the right moment as the train reaches a feature.
  • Rhythm: maintaining a sequence instead of treating every trick as an isolated input.
  • Creativity: finding score opportunities in the route and combining moves rather than simply reaching the finish.

Jaumandreu also says the project uses “self-expression and creativity to celebrate each others’ differences and come together to face oppression.” That is the stated thematic ambition. The practical question is whether the mechanics leave enough room for self-expression when a stage changes its rules or funnels you through a set piece.

Campaign size, settings and progression

The official launch announcement advertises more than 60 levels across eight regions and 46 prefectures. Those are publisher-provided figures, so they describe the planned game scope rather than an independently counted level total. The route moves through markedly different Japanese-inspired environments, including urban areas, rural scenery, volcanic terrain and ocean crossings.

Levels are framed as arcade challenges rather than quiet journeys. The route itself supplies opportunities for ollies, kickflips, grinds and combo chains, while bosses and rival gangs give the campaign encounters beyond score attack. The Miraidō corporation provides the opposing power in the setting. Customization lets you alter the train, although the supplied platform information does not establish a complete list of cosmetic or performance parts.

The game’s soundtrack is another substantial content feature. An official soundtrack announcement cites 81 tracks and identifies Kid Katana and Fireshine Games as the soundtrack’s release partners. The official FAQ says a game-plus-OST bundle exists and that the music is available through major listening platforms. The available information confirms digital listening and the bundle, but it does not establish physical soundtrack media.

What the independent review praises—and what it questions

There is one clearly identified independent review in the available material, so its conclusions should be read as an individual critical perspective rather than a consensus. Kerry Brunskill’s PC Gamer review, published July 15, 2026, gives Denshattack! a score of 63.

The appeal: spectacle and unusual set pieces

Brunskill describes the game as visually striking and acknowledges the appeal of its unusual set pieces. That matches the premise: a train performing skateboard tricks across extreme landscapes is immediately legible on screen, and the route-based format lets the game stage large, theatrical moments. If you are attracted to games that build their identity around one outsized visual idea, Denshattack! has a stronger hook than a conventional platformer.

The concern: inconsistent train behavior

The review’s central criticism is that the train does not always communicate convincing weight and inertia. The game is asking you to believe that a massive machine is both heavy and capable of acrobatics. When movement feels inconsistent, the tension between those two qualities can become friction rather than fantasy: a miss may seem to come from changing behavior instead of a timing error you can understand and correct.

The concern: rules that vary by stage section

Brunskill also argues that the rules can change between sections of a level. A move or interaction that behaves one way in one segment may not carry the same expectation into the next. For a game built around rhythm and route memory, that inconsistency matters because mastery depends on forming reliable predictions.

The concern: scripted sequences and limited freedom

The review further says that scripted sequences can leave too little room for player creativity. This is the sharpest tension with the director’s stated goal. Denshattack! deliberately replaces an open skatepark with tracks, but the route still needs to provide meaningful choices. If a set piece determines the result too tightly, the player may feel like an audience member waiting for the next animation rather than the author of a combo.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those points do not prove that every player will have the same experience. They identify the risk to evaluate: whether the game’s spectacle remains satisfying after the novelty of a trick-performing train wears off. The score of 63 belongs to PC Gamer’s review and should not be treated as an aggregate or industry-wide rating.

How the premise compares with other game types

Denshattack! overlaps with skateboarding games in its trick vocabulary and score-chasing structure, but it is not an open skateboarding sandbox. The director explicitly frames the adaptation around rail momentum, timing and route-based tracks.

It also overlaps with train games only at the level of subject matter. You are not managing schedules, signals, cargo or a simulation model. The train is an expressive action character whose impossible movement is the point. Comparing it with a train simulator is useful for explaining the contrast, not for predicting how either game plays.

That distinction helps set expectations. Someone seeking a skate game with complete control over a large practice space may find the fixed routes restrictive. Someone seeking a train game with simulation systems will not find those systems here. The intended audience is closer to players who enjoy arcade movement, memorizing courses and optimizing combos.

Listed accessibility options include adjustable effects, subtitle options, remappable controls, the ability to play without sound and a color-blind-friendly user interface. Those options matter for a rhythm- and spectacle-heavy game: reducing effects can improve visual clarity, remapping can move timing-sensitive actions to a preferred layout, and playing without sound avoids making audio mandatory.

Language support on Steam includes English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Catalan and Korean. The FAQ specifies English and Japanese voice acting. PlayStation’s US listing describes subtitles as basic and says they cover the main story and main characters; that is a platform-listing detail and should not be generalized to every version without checking its own accessibility information.

Physical editions, merchandise and the soundtrack

The official FAQ, dated July 13, 2026, said there were no current plans for a physical edition and no merchandise store. Those statements reflect the FAQ’s position at that time; release plans can change, so treat them as a dated availability note rather than a permanent promise.

The same FAQ confirms the digital soundtrack details: Kid Katana and Fireshine Games released the music, a game-plus-OST bundle is available, and the soundtrack can be heard on major platforms. The material does not establish physical soundtrack formats, merchandise availability or affiliate commissions connected to the creator program mentioned in the FAQ.

Who is most likely to enjoy Denshattack!

A good fit

  • You want an arcade action game organized around routes, timing and score improvement.
  • The idea of performing skateboard tricks with a train is the sort of focused novelty you want to explore.
  • You enjoy learning stages, repeating sections and refining combo routes.
  • You prefer a single-player campaign rather than competitive online play.
  • You plan to play with a controller, including on Steam Deck or a console.

A possible mismatch

  • You need movement and collision rules to remain identical across every stage section.
  • You are looking for an open skateboarding sandbox with unrestricted practice space.
  • You want a realistic train simulation involving operations, scheduling or logistics.
  • You dislike scripted sequences that limit improvisation.
  • You expect a review score to settle the question for everyone; the available 63 is one reviewer’s assessment, not a consensus.

A practical checklist before you buy

  1. Choose your platform. Confirm the July 15, 2026 release listing for PC, Switch 2, PS5 or Xbox Series X|S and check the current store page for edition details.
  2. Check input. The developer recommends a controller. If you are buying on PC, confirm that your controller is supported before committing to a setup.
  3. Check hardware. On PC, compare your system with Steam’s Windows, processor, graphics, memory, DirectX 12 and 6 GB storage requirements.
  4. Decide whether route repetition appeals to you. The design is built around timing, rhythm and creativity within tracks, so improvement comes from learning how a level behaves rather than freely roaming.
  5. Read the platform’s accessibility information. Options are documented in the FAQ, while PlayStation provides its own subtitle description. Verify the version you intend to play.
  6. Set expectations about physical products. The July 13 FAQ said no physical edition or merchandise store was planned at that time; look for a newer official announcement if a boxed copy matters to you.

Verdict

Denshattack! is an inventive premise attached to a deliberately constrained arcade structure. Undercoders has made the train itself the character and the railway the skatepark, with a campaign advertised at more than 60 levels, eight regions and 46 prefectures, plus bosses, rival gangs, customization and an 81-track soundtrack. Its strongest appeal is visual and conceptual: few games offer the fantasy of chaining a kickflip into a grind while a train crosses a volcano or ocean route.

The decisive caveat comes from the handling. PC Gamer’s July 15 review found the train’s weight and inertia inconsistent, the rules uneven across stage sections and scripted moments too restrictive for the creativity the concept promises. That is a specific critical reading, not a universal verdict, but it identifies exactly what prospective players should weigh. If you enjoy mastering authored courses and can accept occasional friction between spectacle and control, Denshattack! offers a distinctive single-player ride. If you need transparent physics and uninterrupted freedom, its central design choice may be the reason it fails to click.
