Descenders is an arcade-leaning downhill biking game built around fast, physics-driven runs on procedurally generated courses. Critics have praised its speed, flow, soundtrack and replay structure, while also noting rough edges, punishing moments and the risk of repetition. Whether it clicks depends largely on how much you enjoy repeating high-speed descents and adapting to changing terrain.
What kind of game is Descenders?
Developed by RageSquid and published by No More Robots, Descenders launched in full on May 7, 2019. Its central activity is riding downhill through courses that change from run to run, using freestyle controls and a physics system to manage jumps, slopes and landings. The Steam description calls it “a fast-paced extreme downhill biking game that’s easy to pick up, but difficult to master.”

Runs also have a roguelike element: the “Rogue-Bike” system awards mutators that affect a run. Outside individual runs, an online reputation system provides a route to unlocking bikes and clothing. A licensed soundtrack associated with drum-and-bass label Liquicity supports the game’s rapid pace.

What do reviews praise—and criticize?
Metacritic’s collected critic excerpts point to a clear trade-off rather than a universal verdict. Positive observations highlight the sense of speed, satisfying flow, arcade thrills, soundtrack and the appeal of the roguelike structure. Less enthusiastic excerpts describe rough edges and a punishing feel, and suggest that procedural variation can sometimes make runs less enjoyable or that the gameplay can become repetitive.
#1 Best Overall
- Descenders is extreme Downhill free riding for the modern era, with procedurally generated worlds, and where mistakes have real consequences.
- In Descenders, your team is your life. When you pick a side, you'll be bound together with other players who choose the same side as you.
- Grab your bike, pick your team, and attempt to live up to the legend of your Descender
Those excerpts represent individual critics, not every player or a single consensus score across platforms. The core appeal is the challenge of stringing together fast descents and adapting to changing courses; the same run-based repetition and variability may be a drawback if you prefer carefully authored tracks or a consistently forgiving ride.
What do players rate Descenders?
Store ratings are positive in the available snapshots, but the platforms use different rating systems and draw on separate groups of customers. These are dated observations, not permanent scores:
| Store | Rating snapshot | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Steam | 95% positive from 11,388 English reviews; Steam access snapshot, 2026 | English-language user reviews on Steam |
| Steam, recent reviews | 96% positive from 241 reviews; Steam access snapshot, 2026 | Reviews Steam labels as recent, from the last 30 days at the time of access |
| PlayStation Store | 4.07/5 from 11,632 ratings; PlayStation Store access snapshot, 2026 | PlayStation Store customer ratings |
Do not compare the percentages directly with the PlayStation five-star average as if they were the same measure. Both rating totals and scores can change.

Descenders is a good fit if you want quick, repeatable downhill runs, enjoy learning physics-based control and like adapting to courses that change. Its arcade momentum, soundtrack and run-based progression are the qualities critics most often praised in the cited excerpts. If procedural variation, a punishing feel or repeating the same broad activity tends to wear on you, the criticisms point to real reasons for caution. The available evidence supports that trade-off, not a definitive verdict for every player or platform.
