Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutedeskadp.dll is a Microsoft Windows component named “Advanced display adapter properties.” If deskadp.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows before downloading any replacement file.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, note:
- Which program shows the error: Windows itself, a game, or another application
- The exact wording of the message
- Whether it started after Windows Update, a graphics-driver change, cleanup software, antivirus activity, or a crash
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether display settings, resolution, or the graphics adapter are also malfunctioning
The most useful first distinction is whether Windows reports the error while opening display settings or whether only one application reports it. A Windows-wide error points toward damaged system files. An error from one program may involve that program, its dependencies, or a copy of the DLL in its application folder.

What deskadp.dll does
deskadp.dll is associated with Windows display adapter properties and the Display Adapter Control Panel extension. It is not a graphics driver and is not part of the Visual C++ runtime, DirectX redistributables, or .NET.
The genuine Windows copy has historically been located in:

C:WindowsSystem32deskadp.dll
Windows builds differ, so there is no single correct universal file size or version. Older Windows inventories identify the file as “Advanced display adapter properties,” while other inventories identify Microsoft production signatures and both 32-bit and 64-bit builds.
The filename alone does not prove that a file is safe. A malicious file can use a Microsoft-looking name. Check its location, publisher signature, architecture, and Windows integrity before trusting it.
What the error message means
You may see wording such as:
- “The program can’t start because deskadp.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because deskadp.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting deskadp.dll.”
- “Error loading deskadp.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “deskadp.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are general Windows DLL-loader messages. They do not identify the cause by themselves.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“Specified module could not be found” can mean either that deskadp.dll is absent or that a dependency required by the DLL is missing. “Bad image” or “not designed to run on Windows” wording more often indicates corruption, an incompatible architecture, or a damaged file.
Do not download deskadp.dll from a DLL website
Do not download an isolated deskadp.dll file and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, a game folder, or an application directory. The file may contain malware, belong to a different Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or fail to repair the damaged component that caused the error.
A downloaded DLL can also create a second problem by shadowing the genuine Windows copy. The safe sources are Windows itself, Windows Update, official Windows installation media, and the repair mechanisms described below.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the safest and most likely fix when Windows itself is missing or rejecting deskadp.dll.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies using that repaired store.
Run DISM first
- Press Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window because progress may pause for a while.
- When it completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
Do not reverse the order. Running SFC first can leave it without a healthy component source from which to restore the file.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, the issue may involve a dependency, an application-specific copy, a driver, or another system problem rather than a damaged protected file.
If you prefer assistance identifying damaged Windows components instead of repeatedly interpreting DISM and SFC output, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems; its free scan shows what it found, while repair actions are performed by the full version, and it is not required for the Microsoft repair process.

If DISM says that source files could not be found, do not use a random DLL as the source. Microsoft supports using a matching Windows installation or repair source:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to a genuine repair source that matches your Windows edition, release, build, and architecture. An unmatched source can fail or introduce additional inconsistencies.
Run SFC again after DISM completes:
sfc /scannow
Then restart.
Fix 2: Install pending Windows updates
An interrupted update or feature upgrade can leave Windows components incomplete.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when requested.
- Check for updates again after the restart.
- If the error remains, run DISM and SFC again in the order shown above.
If the problem started immediately after a Windows update, record the update date and avoid repeatedly uninstalling updates without a recovery plan. A failed feature upgrade can damage more than one component.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software may quarantine a damaged or suspicious file. It may also produce a false positive.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any entry related to
deskadp.dll. - Check its original path and detection details.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- The original location is the expected Windows system directory.
- The file is identified as a genuine Microsoft Windows component.
- Windows integrity checks support that conclusion.
- A full security scan does not indicate broader malware activity.
Microsoft warns that restoring a detected file can cause Defender to detect it again. If it is a verified false positive, Windows Security may require Allow on device.
Do not create an antivirus exclusion merely because the filename is deskadp.dll. Malware can use that name. If the file keeps returning to quarantine, run a full scan and investigate the system rather than repeatedly restoring it.

Fix 4: Check the graphics driver
A graphics-driver problem is relevant when the DLL error appears with:
- Missing display settings
- An incorrect screen resolution
- Display flickering
- A blank or limited display
- Microsoft Basic Display Adapter shown in Device Manager
deskadp.dll is not the graphics driver, so reinstalling a driver will not replace a missing Windows system DLL. It can still correct related display problems.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the listed adapter.
- Select Properties.
- Review the General tab for an error code.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and version.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, use Windows Update or the official support page for the computer or graphics-card manufacturer. Do not download a driver from an unofficial driver archive.
If the problem began after a driver update, open the adapter’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when that button is available. Otherwise, uninstalling and reinstalling the driver may be appropriate, but make sure you have a compatible official driver before removing the current one.

If you want to avoid hunting through hardware models and guessing which driver package is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is not a substitute for repairing Windows with DISM and SFC.
Fix 5: Repair the affected application or game
If only one game or application reports deskadp.dll, do not assume the application owns the file. deskadp.dll is a Windows component, and the application may simply be triggering a Windows display-property call.
First use the program’s own repair process:
- Open the application launcher.
- Find the affected game or application.
- Open its settings or management menu.
- Select Verify files, Repair, or the equivalent option.
- Wait for the scan to finish.
- Restart the application.
If no verification feature exists, repair or reinstall the application through its official installer or Windows app settings:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Find the affected program.
- Open its menu.
- Choose Advanced options when available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data.
- Reinstall the program if necessary.
If reinstalling the application fixes the problem, the application installation or one of its private dependencies was likely damaged. Do not place a downloaded copy of deskadp.dll beside the executable.

Fix 6: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Windows uses separate system locations and loader rules for 32-bit and 64-bit software. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 supports 32-bit system components. The names are confusing, but manually copying between them is unsafe.
To check your Windows architecture:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Find System type.
A 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows may use redirected system paths. That does not mean you should copy a DLL into SysWOW64. Let Windows and its system-file repair tools select the correct file.
A file from another Windows release, edition, build, or architecture may look plausible but still fail to load. This is one reason public version lists are not a safe way to choose a replacement.
Fix 7: Verify the file’s path and signature
If a file exists but Windows says it is invalid, inspect it rather than replacing it immediately.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the reported file location.
- Right-click
deskadp.dll. - Select Properties.
- Review the General tab for the full path.
- Open Details and check the description, product, and publisher information.
- Open Digital Signatures if that tab is present.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
A genuine system copy is expected in the Windows system directory, historically C:WindowsSystem32. A copy in a temporary folder, download folder, or application directory deserves additional scrutiny.
The signature check is useful but not sufficient by itself. Follow it with:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Do not trust a suspicious copy merely because its filename and description look correct.
Why regsvr32 usually will not fix this file
regsvr32 is used for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose “repair any DLL” command.

Available file inventories for deskadp.dll identify COM-related exports such as DllCanUnloadNow and DllGetClassObject, but not DllRegisterServer. Running this command is therefore not an evidence-based repair:
regsvr32 deskadp.dll
It may produce an entry-point error, or it may leave the underlying missing or corrupted component unchanged. Use DISM and SFC for a Windows system DLL instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Windows Features usually are not the answer
Turning Windows Features on and off is useful for optional components such as certain .NET features, legacy components, or virtualization tools. deskadp.dll is a Windows display-properties component, not a normal optional runtime package.
Do not enable Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or unrelated Windows Features solely because a DLL error mentions this filename. Those packages do not provide the normal repair path for deskadp.dll.
You can still check whether a broader Windows feature operation is pending:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Install pending updates.
- Restart.
- Run DISM and SFC again.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is useful when the error began after a driver installation, cleanup operation, update, or other system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Save open work and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally rolls back system files, settings, and installed programs without changing personal files. It does not replace a backup, so copy important files before using recovery tools.
After restoration, install necessary Windows updates and graphics drivers carefully. If the error returns, the original cause may still be present.

Fix 9: Use Windows recovery or an in-place repair
If DISM and SFC repeatedly fail, or repaired files become corrupted again, investigate:
- Disk or filesystem damage
- Malware
- An interrupted feature upgrade
- A severely damaged component store
- An unstable storage device
Back up important data first. Then open Settings > System > Recovery and review the available recovery options. The exact choices depend on the Windows version and installation state.
If System Restore does not help, an in-place repair installation can refresh Windows while normally preserving personal files and applications. Use genuine Windows installation media that matches the installed edition and architecture, and follow Microsoft’s recovery guidance carefully.

A clean installation is a last resort and can remove applications and data. Do not begin there when DISM, SFC, application repair, or System Restore can still address the problem.
What to do when SFC says it repaired files but the error remains
Restart first, then test the failing program again. If the message remains:
- Run DISM again.
- Run SFC again.
- Check whether the error is limited to one application.
- Verify the application’s files.
- Check Windows Security Protection history.
- Inspect the file path and digital signature.
- Check Device Manager for display-adapter errors.
- Look for a missing dependency or architecture mismatch.
- Use System Restore if the issue followed a recent system change.
SFC can repair the protected file while the actual problem remains elsewhere. For example, the loader may be missing a dependency, an application may contain a bad private copy, or the component may be damaged again by disk errors or malware.
FAQ
Is deskadp.dll a graphics driver?
No. It is a Windows display-properties and Control Panel component. Graphics drivers are installed separately and appear under Display adapters in Device Manager.
Is deskadp.dll malware?
The filename alone cannot answer that. Check the path, Microsoft publisher information, digital signature, and system integrity. A copy outside the expected Windows directory should be treated cautiously.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I copy deskadp.dll into System32?
No. Use DISM and SFC. Manual replacement is appropriate only as an advanced recovery step using a known-good file from the same Windows build or official installation media, followed by SFC.
Should I copy it into SysWOW64 for a 32-bit program?
No. Windows handles system-file redirection and architecture selection. Manual copying can create mismatched or shadowing files.
Can I fix it with regsvr32?
Usually not. regsvr32 applies to DLLs with the appropriate registration entry point, and deskadp.dll is not documented here as providing DllRegisterServer.
Why does only one game report the error?
The game may be triggering a Windows display call, or its own installation may be damaged. Verify or reinstall the game, then repair Windows if other programs show the same error.
Does Windows 11 definitely use this exact DLL?
Public evidence confirms the component in older Windows and Windows 10 inventories, but it does not establish that every Windows 11 build contains the identical file implementation. Use the repair steps and your installed system’s verified path rather than assuming a particular version or size.
What is the correct order of commands?
Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Restart after both commands complete. This is the primary repair path for a missing or corrupted Windows copy of deskadp.dll.
