What Desolate Planet is
Desolate Planet is a hardcore, quest-driven survival modpack inspired by Crash Landing. Its premise places you after a crash on Planet T4L0S in the Varkin system. The surface is arid, radiation is elevated, minerals are abundant, and hydrocarbons lie below ground. Survival depends on managing heat, thirst and food while gathering scarce materials, advancing through technology and working toward an escape.

Quests provide direction, but you still have to establish a sustainable base, secure water and food, and choose when an expedition is worth the risk.
Compatibility and the current release
Use the Java Edition of Minecraft, not Bedrock. Both the client and server listings support Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge. The current CurseForge project listing identifies Desolate Planet-1.8.6.0 as the latest release, dated June 17, 2026. Its matching server download is named Desolate Planet Server Pack Curseforge.zip and carries the same date.

Every player and the server should use the same release. A client on another pack version can fail to connect, show missing-mod errors or create a world that cannot be safely moved between installations.
Choose how you will play multiplayer
There are three practical arrangements. The right choice depends on whether the host must stay online, how much control you need over files and updates, and who will handle backups.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Method | Persistence while the owner is offline | Setup effort | Control and resources | Backup and cost responsibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single-player world opened to LAN with e4mc | None; the owner’s game must remain open. | Lowest. No separate server installation. | Uses the owner’s computer and local game settings. | The owner protects the world save. No recurring server bill. |
| Self-hosted dedicated server | Yes, while the server process and machine are running. | Moderate. Requires the dedicated server pack and Forge-compatible Java setup. | Full access to server files, configuration and update timing; performance depends on your hardware and connection. | You make and test backups. Hardware and electricity are your costs. |
| Managed hosting | Normally yes, subject to the provider’s service and plan. | Lower administration after uploading or selecting the pack profile. | The host supplies a control panel and allocated CPU/RAM; file and update controls vary. | The provider may offer tools or scheduled backups, but confirm what is included and pay the recurring plan price. |
The official project documentation covers the e4mc and dedicated-server routes. A 2026 commercial hosting page for this pack is useful as a sizing example, but its RAM figures, trial and prices are provider estimates rather than universal Desolate Planet requirements.
Install Desolate Planet on a client
Before you install
- Use Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1.
- Have the CurseForge or Modrinth app installed and signed in to the Minecraft installation you intend to use.
- Reserve at least 6 GB of RAM for the modpack profile. The project FAQ says 8 GB is preferable when the computer has enough memory.
- Leave additional memory for the operating system and other applications; assigning nearly all physical RAM can make the launcher or desktop unstable.
CurseForge or Modrinth installation
- Open the CurseForge or Modrinth app and select its Minecraft section.
- Search for the exact project name, Desolate Planet – A Crash Landing Remake. Check the author and pack identity so you do not install a similarly named project.
- Choose Install. The app should create a profile with Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge and download the required mods, configs and resource files.
- Open the new profile’s settings and set allocated memory to 6–8 GB. Use 8 GB if your machine can provide it without starving the operating system.
- Launch the profile once from the app. The first start can take longer while Forge builds caches; allow it to finish before changing files.
If loading repeatedly stalls, check the profile’s memory allocation first. The official FAQ specifically directs players to verify that at least 6 GB is assigned before changing mods or other files. Altering the pack’s contents can create a different installation that no longer matches a server or support instructions.

Download and run the dedicated server
Get the correct server files
- Open the current Desolate Planet release on CurseForge.
- Choose the latest release, then open Additional Files.
- Download the matching file named
Desolate Planet Server Pack Curseforge.zip. Do not upload an ordinary client profile as a substitute; the server pack is assembled for dedicated-server use. - Extract the ZIP into a new, empty server directory. Keeping the files together makes later backups and version changes easier.
Start it on Windows
In the extracted directory, run run.bat. Keep the command window open while friends are playing; closing it stops the server. If Windows displays a Java error, verify that the installed Java and Forge environment meet the pack’s requirements before trying a different mod set.
Start it on Linux or macOS
In the extracted directory, run run.sh. On systems that block execution of a newly extracted script, grant the file permission required by your operating system, then execute it from the server directory. Keep the terminal session available so you can see startup errors and stop the server cleanly.
Use a hosting provider
Upload the contents of the extracted server pack to the provider’s Minecraft server area, then follow that host’s Forge setup instructions. Some panels ask you to select a Forge version or a modpack profile instead of uploading files; in either case, verify that the resulting game version, Forge version and pack release match your players’ clients. Do not assume a host’s generic “modded” profile is equivalent to the Desolate Planet server pack.
RAM, Java and player-count planning
The project’s official guidance is for the client: allocate 6–8 GB in the launcher, with 8 GB preferred when available. Server sizing is different because the process must keep the world simulation, loaded chunks and every connected player running even when the administrator is not playing.

| Use case | Published guidance | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Client profile | 6 GB minimum guidance; 8 GB usually recommended | From the Desolate Planet project FAQ, 2026 page snapshot. |
| Small managed-server group | 6 GB | Estimate from a commercial hosting page for this pack, not an official requirement. |
| Five to ten players on managed hosting | 8 GB | Same provider estimate; actual needs vary with exploration, chunk loading and other host limits. |
| Java runtime on that hosting profile | Java 17 | Provider recommendation for its profile; confirm the required runtime in your own host panel. |
The same hosting page documented a seven-day 8 GB trial and paid tiers. Trial length, price, availability and resource guarantees can change, so verify them directly before ordering. Treat the 6 GB and 8 GB server figures as starting points: watch memory use and tick performance after several players explore in different directions rather than assuming a player-count label guarantees smooth play.
Let friends join with e4mc
For a short session, the pack already includes e4mc. It avoids a separate dedicated-server installation by publishing a join address when you open your single-player world to LAN.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Launch the same Desolate Planet client profile your friends use.
- Open the single-player world you want to share.
- Use Minecraft’s Open to LAN option from the in-game menu.
- e4mc prints a join address in chat.
- Send that address to your friends. They must use the matching Java, Forge and pack release.
This arrangement is temporary: the world is available only while the host’s game is open and connected. It is convenient for an evening or a quick test, but it is not a persistent realm. Choose a dedicated server when friends need to play while the owner is offline or when you want a machine that can run independently of the owner’s local game.
Hardcore rules, extra lives and debuffs
Hardcore is intentional
Hardcore is part of Desolate Planet’s intended balance. Deaths, limited resources and environmental pressure are meant to make preparation matter. The official FAQ recommends learning to use Sync shells, which provide extra lives within the pack’s progression, rather than immediately removing the rule that makes survival dangerous.

What causes weakness, mining fatigue and hunger effects?
The project FAQ attributes weakness, mining fatigue and hunger debuffs to malnourishment. When these effects appear, review your food and nutrition situation before assuming that Forge or a graphics setting is broken. Sustaining a reliable food supply is a core survival task in this pack.
Disable hardcore only after a backup
If you still want a non-hardcore world, back up the world and the configuration files first. Edit config/globalgamerules-common.toml and change the relevant hardcore game-rule setting. The correct file and effective setting differ between a client world and a dedicated server, so make the change on the installation that actually owns the world: the server for a dedicated world, or the client’s instance for a local world. Restart and test with a copy before inviting others.
Keep the original backup untouched. A configuration change can alter the expected rules for an existing save, and a future pack update may replace or migrate configuration files. Sync shells remain the supported way to work within the pack’s original design; disabling hardcore is an optional configuration change, not a separate edition of the modpack.

The launcher hangs or the pack will not finish loading
- Confirm the profile is Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 with Forge.
- Check that the launcher has at least 6 GB assigned; try 8 GB if the computer has sufficient physical memory.
- Do not remove or swap mods while diagnosing a memory problem. First test the unmodified installed profile.
A friend cannot connect
- Compare the exact pack release on both sides. The server and every client must match.
- For e4mc, confirm the host actually opened the world to LAN and sent the address printed in chat. The host must remain in the world.
- For a dedicated server, make sure the server is running the server pack rather than a client folder.
- Check that the connecting player is using Java Edition 1.20.1 and Forge, not Bedrock or another loader.
The dedicated server fails after moving it to a host
- Verify the host’s selected Java runtime and Forge version against the pack profile.
- Confirm that the uploaded directory contains the extracted server-pack contents and that the host is not silently replacing them with a generic profile.
- Check the host’s allocated memory. The provider’s 6 GB and 8 GB examples are starting estimates, not proof that every configuration has enough headroom.
A hardcore change causes unexpected behavior
- Stop the game or server before editing configuration.
- Restore the backup if the world behaves incorrectly.
- Recheck whether you edited the client or the server file; a dedicated server’s rules are controlled on the server installation.
Updating without breaking a world
Before changing the pack release, stop the server or close the client, copy the world save and preserve the current configuration. Install the new release in a separate directory or profile, then verify that its Forge and Minecraft versions are compatible. Keep a record of which release the world last used, and require every player to update before reconnecting. This gives you a rollback path if a mod, configuration migration or server-side change affects the save.

Recommended setup by situation
You are testing the pack alone
Install through CurseForge or Modrinth, assign 6–8 GB, and use a local world. This is the fastest way to learn heat, thirst, nutrition, quests and Sync shells without maintaining a server.
You are playing one evening with friends
Use e4mc: open the world to LAN and share the address it prints. It requires almost no administration, but the host must stay online.
You want a continuing private world
Use the matching dedicated server pack. Self-host it when you want direct file access and can manage backups; use managed hosting when you prefer a control panel and an always-on machine. In both cases, keep client and server releases identical and choose memory based on actual activity rather than a generic player-count promise.
Bottom line
Desolate Planet is a Java 1.20.1 Forge survival pack built around harsh, quest-led progression. The safest installation path is the official app profile with 6–8 GB allocated, followed by the release’s dedicated server pack when you need persistence. e4mc handles temporary LAN sessions; a dedicated server handles an always-available world. Keep backups before changing the hardcore rule, and treat Sync shells as the intended way to gain extra lives.
