To earn Malfeasance, complete the seven steps in Destiny 2’s Darkness in the Light quest. The main hurdles are defeating 25 Taken bosses or minibosses in the Dreaming City, winning Gambit matches while depositing motes, and completing the final invasion objectives. Here is the listed order and what each step requires.

Defeat 25 opposing Guardians as an invader in Gambit, and complete one of these four-Guardian conditions:

- Defeat four opposing Guardians yourself in a single invasion.
The 25 invader defeats are an additional requirement; they are separate from the four-Guardian condition.

What to know before starting the Gambit stages
Opening the quest
The opening Malfeasance quest step is to defeat a Gambit Primeval. A community-maintained Malfeasance quest history, last edited October 3, 2026, says any Primeval now qualifies; the Ascendant Primeval Servitor requirement is historical because that Servitor was removed. The same page says Forsaken ownership is no longer required, but it is not a Bungie account-specific eligibility checker. The reviewed sources do not establish a guaranteed current pickup location for every account, so do not assume the Quest Archive or the Drifter’s vendor page will provide it.

Gambit access and invasion basics
Bungie’s Gambit Guide describes the mode as a team activity built around fighting enemies, collecting and banking motes, and invading the other team. It lists owning Destiny 2 and completing the New Light introductory quest as requirements to access Gambit through the Director. The guide says an invasion can occur each time 25 motes are banked, and that an invader’s death during the Primeval phase restores Primeval health. The help page may not reflect every later interface or activity update.

Planning the final Gambit objective
The four-Guardian condition offers a choice: make a single four-kill invasion yourself, or rely on an ally to do so on three separate invasions. The ally-assisted route requires repeated qualifying invasions; the personal route requires all four defeats in one invasion. Choose the route that better fits your team rather than treating the two as cumulative requirements.
Current game context
Bungie’s Update 9.7.0 support guide says the update launched June 9, 2026, and that no further live-service content updates were planned after it, though health or stability hotfixes remained possible. Bungie’s support page lists the Dreaming City among available destinations. Neither statement confirms whether a later hotfix changed this quest’s objectives.
