Heavy Metal was a limited-time 3v3 vehicle PvP mode in Destiny 2, featuring Brigs and Drake tanks. Its original run began May 9, 2025, and it returned September 2–9, 2025. Both event windows have passed, and no later reissue is established by Bungie’s announcements cited here.
What was the Heavy Metal event in Destiny 2?
Heavy Metal was a limited-time Crucible-style vehicle mode in which Guardians fought using Brigs and Drake tanks. Bungie described it as a 3v3 PvP mode when it announced the September return. The original event was announced for May 9, 2025. Bungie’s March 6 preview introduced the vehicle-combat premise, and its August 28 return announcement specified the 3v3 format.

How did Heavy Metal progression work?
The Event Home used a 15-rank Event Track. Daily challenges rotated at reset, alongside one weekly challenge; challenges supplied most Event Track experience, with event activities also granting progress. Each rank had a reward. Bungie’s April 24, 2025 explanation outlined the Event Home and progression system.
Event Tokens and Reward Shop
Daily and weekly challenges awarded Event Tokens, with weekly challenges granting more. Players could spend tokens in the event Reward Shop on items that could include weapons, materials, and Reroll Chips. A Reroll Chip could reroll a daily challenge. Tokens did not carry over: Bungie said they expired when the event ended, so any tokens earned during either event window had to be spent before that run closed.

What rewards did the event offer?
Bungie described the 15-rank track as including rewards such as a weapon, an emblem, and enhancement materials, and previewed the Gryphon Combat Sparrow. The September 2025 return announcement named these specific rank milestones:
| September 2025 milestone | Reward | Who could earn it |
|---|---|---|
| Rank 5 | Heavier Duty emblem | Players progressing through the event track |
| Rank 10 | Sword holofoil | Players progressing through the event track |
| Rank 14 | Gryphon Exotic Sparrow | Players who had not earned it previously |
| Rank 15 | Kinetic shotgun holofoil | Players progressing through the event track |
These are the rewards Bungie listed for the September return, not a current reward path. The same event window also offered the Mad Dog emblem as a Twitch Drop: viewers had to watch a participating streamer for one hour during the event. The drop was limited to that historical window. Details and dates appear in Bungie’s August 28, 2025 announcement.

When did Heavy Metal run, and is it available now?
The first event was announced for May 9, 2025. Bungie later announced a seven-day return from September 2 through September 9, 2025. Those dates have passed. The September return took place after the end of Episode: Heresy; it should be understood as a later event return, not evidence that the episode remained active.
Bungie said Episode: Heresy, Rite of the Nine, and all Year 7 content ended July 15, 2025, and urged players to claim expiring rewards before that transition. Its July 10, 2025 announcement gives that end date. The later September event announcement establishes a return after that date, but does not establish any further reissue or current way to obtain its rewards.
