If Destiny 2 takes forever to load, first separate loading or login trouble from frame-rate stutters: the fixes are not interchangeable. Bungie is investigating reports of frame hitches or performance drops on Steam since Update 9.7.0.2, but its current known-issues list does not establish a general long-loading problem across PC and console. Check service status for login errors, use the relevant platform steps below, and avoid assuming that new hardware will solve the symptom.
What Bungie currently lists as a performance issue
Bungie’s Year 8 known-issues page, in a section last updated July 7, 2026, says it is investigating reports of “frame hitches or performance drops while playing Destiny 2 on Steam since the release of Update 9.7.0.2.” That statement is specific to Steam PC and a reported frame-performance symptom; it does not identify a cause or confirm that all Steam players are affected. Bungie’s current known-issues list has a Console subsection, but the reviewed list does not include a console performance issue. Bungie says its list is targeted and incomplete, so an issue not listed there is not thereby ruled out. Check the page for current updates before treating its status as unchanged.
Identify what “slow” means before changing settings
Note the exact point where the delay or disruption happens. Slow startup, slow character-select loading, waiting for a destination or game files, low frame rate, brief frame hitches, server errors, and a slow update download are different symptoms.
- Where: Record platform and storefront—Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store, PlayStation, or Xbox.
- When: Note whether it began after a Destiny 2 update, an operating-system or driver change, or a hardware change.
- Scope: Check whether other games on the same device also load slowly or stutter.
- Repeatability: Note whether the same activity consistently triggers the problem or it happens intermittently.
These details help narrow down what to check; on their own, they do not prove that a particular update, component, or network condition caused the issue.

If you see a server error or cannot log in
Network and service trouble can prevent login or interrupt online play, but network steps are not a general fix for low FPS or PC frame hitches. Bungie says Destiny needs a stable connection and recommends checking whether the game or platform is experiencing an outage first. Check Destiny server and update status and your platform’s service status, then work through Bungie’s network guidance.
- Check service status. If Destiny or your platform is offline, local network changes are unlikely to resolve the outage.
- Use a wired connection if practical. Bungie’s Network Troubleshooting Guide says, “Destiny is an online shared-world shooter that requires a constant and stable internet connection to play.” It strongly recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi may have signal-strength or stability problems. An Ethernet cable can provide a wired link in a suitable setup; it is not a promised fix for loading times or FPS.
- Reduce competing network use. Pause streaming or other heavy internet use while testing Destiny 2.
- Follow the step for your platform. Bungie recommends clearing the console cache or, on PC, clearing Steam’s download cache as appropriate. These steps target connection or download-related problems, not a confirmed frame-performance cause.
- Restart network equipment. Power-cycle the modem and router, then test again.
- Use later network options only if needed. Bungie’s guide also discusses DNS changes and contacting your internet service provider. Follow its current instructions rather than changing settings at random.
If Destiny 2 is slow to load or misbehaves on console
Bungie says corrupted or otherwise problematic cache data can affect connectivity, loading some game files, or gameplay. Its cache-clearing instructions are a reasonable troubleshooting step for those symptoms, but they do not establish that cache is the cause of every long load.

- Fully power down the console.
- Unplug its power cord and leave it unplugged for at least five minutes.
- Reconnect the cord and power the console back on.
- Relaunch Destiny 2 and check whether the same loading or gameplay issue remains.
See Bungie’s console cache instructions for platform-specific details. Bungie states that clearing the console cache does not affect character, inventory, or progression data, which are tied to the account and platform ID.
If Destiny 2 stutters or has low FPS on PC
Compare the PC with Bungie’s requirements
Check the live Destiny 2 PC requirements for the supported operating system and minimum and recommended hardware. Bungie lists Windows 10 64-bit, 6 GB RAM minimum and 8 GB recommended, along with CPU and graphics requirements that differ by manufacturer. Use the current table rather than relying on an old component comparison. Bungie also says laptop configurations are not officially supported, even when their specifications meet or exceed the minimum requirements.

Match the report to the known Steam issue
If you play on Steam and have frame hitches or performance drops that began after Update 9.7.0.2, that report matches the issue Bungie says it is investigating. The listing does not attribute the issue to a particular graphics card, driver, overlay, processor, or storage device. If your problem does not match the listed report, you can report it on the Bungie Help Forum with your platform, symptom, timing, and steps that reproduce it.

Available storage is relevant to downloads, pre-loads, and installation—not proof that a faster drive will cure Destiny 2 stuttering or long loading. Bungie’s 2026 storage figures, shown with Update 9.7.0, are estimates and can vary. Pre-load requirements may include both installed game data and the update.

What not to assume
- A console cache reset or network change is not a documented cure for PC frame hitches.
- The Steam issue listing does not show that a specific component or driver is responsible.
- Bungie’s storage figures describe capacity needs, not measured performance gains from an SSD.
- A problem missing from the known-issues page may still be real; the list is not exhaustive.
