The best Destiny 2 PC settings are not the ones that produce the highest peak number in orbit; they are the ones that hold a frame rate your computer can sustain in its hardest activity while keeping targets clear. Start at your monitor’s native resolution, cap FPS to a value your system can maintain, preserve texture quality when your VRAM allows, and reduce foliage distance, ambient occlusion and shadows before lowering render resolution. A field of view around 90–95 is a practical visibility/performance compromise, and compatible NVIDIA hardware should leave Reflex enabled.
Check the supported baseline first
Bungie’s published PC requirements list 64-bit Windows 10, 6 GB of system memory and a GTX 660/GTX 1050-class graphics card as minimum examples. The recommended tier lists 8 GB of RAM and GTX 970/GTX 1060-class graphics. These are baseline requirements, not guarantees of a particular frame rate: CPU model, GPU model, resolution, driver version, background software and the activity on screen all change the result.

Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 support ended on June 4, 2024. A supported 64-bit Windows installation is therefore a prerequisite for troubleshooting current PC performance.
Recommended Free Tools
- Use the monitor’s native output resolution as your starting point.
- Update the graphics driver through the normal vendor-supported process before judging a setting change.
- Close overlays and background workloads while testing so the frame-time result represents the game rather than another application.
- Test in the activity that normally causes the worst drops, not in an empty social space.
Choose a stable target instead of chasing peak FPS
A stable cap usually feels better than a fluctuating uncapped frame rate. Pick a value that the PC can hold through your most demanding strikes, raids, public events or Crucible scenes. There is no universal “best FPS” number because a 60 Hz display, a 144 Hz display and a high-refresh display have different useful targets, and two PCs with the same GPU can have different CPU limits.

- Enable the game’s frame-rate cap and begin with a conservative value your system already reaches reliably.
- Play a repeatable difficult section for several minutes. Watch for sustained dips and uneven frame pacing, not only the highest counter reading.
- If the cap is missed regularly, lower the settings in the order below. Raise the cap only after the low points remain acceptable.
Bungie’s CVARS documentation says that a cap value of 0 restores the default 200 FPS cap. That value is a reset-to-default instruction, not a promise that your hardware can render 200 FPS.
Recommended settings order
Make one change at a time and retest. The order protects image clarity first, then removes effects that are relatively expensive for the amount of detail they add.
1. Resolution and display mode
Set the output to the monitor’s native resolution. Native output avoids the softness introduced by scaling and gives you a consistent reference while comparing settings. If you are troubleshooting instability, keep the resolution fixed until the other variables are understood rather than changing several dimensions at once.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →2. Texture Quality
Keep Texture Quality at High or Highest when the graphics card has enough VRAM. Textures affect surface detail and generally preserve more clarity than many lighting effects. NVIDIA’s 1080p maximum-settings test used about 2.6 GB of VRAM and its guide recommends at least 3 GB for the highest textures at 1080p. Cards with less available VRAM can stutter when texture data is repeatedly moved in and out of memory; in that case, lower textures one step before sacrificing render resolution.

3. Field of View
Use about 90–95 as a balanced starting point. A higher FOV shows more peripheral space, which can help awareness in Crucible, but it also makes objects in the center of the screen smaller. NVIDIA measured a 2.4 FPS saving when changing FOV from 105 to 95 in its test scene. Treat that figure as directional evidence from a 2017 measurement, not a guaranteed result on your system.
Choose the value based on how you fight:
- 90–95: balanced peripheral awareness, target size and GPU load.
- Above 95: more peripheral information, with smaller central targets and a modest additional rendering cost.
- Below 90: larger central targets, but less information at the edges and a more zoomed-in feel.
4. Foliage Detail Distance
If frames dip outdoors, lower Foliage Detail Distance from High to Medium. NVIDIA measured about 4.1 FPS recovered by that change in its scene. The setting primarily affects how far detailed vegetation is drawn, so it is a useful early cut that usually leaves characters, weapons and nearby geometry intact.
5. Screen-space ambient occlusion
When the GPU is the limiting component, select HDAO rather than the more expensive ambient-occlusion option. NVIDIA measured about 5.4 FPS recovered with HDAO in its test. Ambient occlusion adds contact shading around surfaces; reducing it can make corners and object intersections look less deep, but it does not remove the underlying geometry.

Use High instead of the highest shadow setting when more performance is needed. NVIDIA measured about 4.1 FPS recovered with little perceived gameplay loss in its scene. Shadows can be costly because they require additional scene rendering, especially in areas with many light sources.

7. Motion Blur
Disable Motion Blur for competitive readability. NVIDIA reports no performance impact from this toggle, so it is a visibility choice rather than an FPS fix. Removing blur keeps quick camera turns and incoming attacks easier to inspect, particularly in Crucible.
8. Render Resolution
Adjust Render Resolution last. Raising it sharpens the image and reduces aliasing, but it directly increases the number of pixels the GPU must shade. Lowering it is a powerful performance lever when the GPU remains overloaded after the heavier effects above have been reduced. Because it changes clarity across the entire image, use the smallest reduction that reaches your frame-time target.
What NVIDIA’s measurements actually show
The following figures come from NVIDIA’s 2017 Destiny 2 PC testing. They are useful for ranking likely trade-offs, but the test scene, game build and hardware differ from yours.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Change | Measured result | Practical interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| FOV 105 to 95 | About 2.4 FPS gained | Small performance return; also enlarges central targets while reducing peripheral view. |
| Foliage Detail Distance High to Medium | About 4.1 FPS gained | Good outdoor cut when distant vegetation is not important to your play. |
| Ambient occlusion to HDAO | About 5.4 FPS gained | One of the stronger GPU-side changes, with reduced contact shading. |
| Shadow Quality to High | About 4.1 FPS gained | Often a better compromise than reducing resolution. |
| Five measured changes combined | About 20 FPS gained | Directional total from one test scene; effects do not scale identically on every PC. |
Do not add the individual figures to predict your own result. A CPU-limited system may gain little from a GPU setting, while a GPU-limited system may gain more or less depending on resolution and driver overhead.

Render scale, textures and VRAM: the clarity decision
Render Resolution and Texture Quality solve different problems. Render resolution determines how many pixels are produced, so it changes edge smoothness and overall sharpness. Textures determine the detail stored on surfaces and are constrained mainly by VRAM capacity. Preserve both when possible, then reduce foliage, ambient occlusion and shadows first.
| Test condition | VRAM measured by NVIDIA | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 1920×1080, maximum settings | About 2.6 GB | Useful reference for a 1080p high-quality target. |
| 200% render resolution | About 3.2 GB | Supersampling increases memory and GPU workload substantially. |
These values are measurements from NVIDIA’s test, not a universal memory requirement. Keep headroom for the operating system and other applications, and judge by frame-time stability rather than a single VRAM number.

Destiny 2 supports the NVIDIA Reflex SDK on compatible graphics cards. On compatible NVIDIA systems, Reflex is enabled by default. Its purpose is to reduce the queue of rendered frames and improve the time between an input and the image appearing, but the exact benefit depends on the GPU, CPU, refresh rate and whether the system is GPU-bound.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Bungie’s documented CVARS values are:
| CVARS value | Mode | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
0 |
Reflex off | May increase latency; use only for troubleshooting or controlled testing. |
1 |
Low Latency (default) | Standard Reflex behavior on supported hardware. |
2 |
Low Latency with Boost | Overrides GPU power-saving behavior and may reduce latency slightly, at the cost of higher power use and heat. |
Leave the default mode in place unless you have a reason to test Boost. Boost is most relevant when maintaining GPU clocks is part of the latency problem; it is not an FPS multiplier and can increase power draw.

- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
How to reset corrupted graphics settings
If a custom setting causes crashes, unusable input, severe visual corruption or a game that will not start correctly, restore the configuration file rather than guessing at individual values.
- Close Destiny 2 completely.
- Open File Explorer and enter
C:UsersUSER_NAMEAppdataRoamingBungieDestinyPCprefs. - Delete
CVARS.xml. - Launch the game. Destiny 2 will generate a fresh CVARS file with default settings.
- Reapply changes gradually, testing after each group so the setting that reintroduces the problem is identifiable.
The reset also removes custom frame-cap and latency values. If you need to return the cap to Bungie’s documented default, the CVARS value 0 represents a 200 FPS cap.
Diagnose the type of slowdown before changing more settings
GPU-limited symptoms
A GPU-limited system usually improves when you lower render resolution, ambient occlusion, shadows or foliage. Start with those changes while keeping textures high if VRAM is not exhausted.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

CPU-limited symptoms
If lowering resolution barely changes the low points, the processor or game-thread workload may be the constraint. Keep resolution and textures at the quality you want, cap FPS below the recurring dips and avoid assuming that another GPU toggle will solve a CPU limit.
VRAM pressure or stutter
Intermittent hitching alongside high memory use points toward texture or resolution pressure rather than an average-FPS problem. Lower Texture Quality one step, reduce excessive render scale and retest the same activity.
Uneven frame pacing
A high average with noticeable judder is still a poor result. Use a lower cap that the system can hold consistently, then verify in the demanding activity where the issue appears. Peak FPS in a quiet area is not a useful substitute for sustained frame-time stability.
A practical preset for competitive visibility
- Native monitor resolution.
- Frame cap set below the lowest sustained rate in your hardest activity.
- Texture Quality High or Highest when VRAM permits.
- FOV 90–95 as the initial compromise.
- Foliage Detail Distance Medium if outdoor drops occur.
- HDAO for ambient occlusion when GPU-limited.
- Shadow Quality High rather than the highest option when needed.
- Motion Blur Off.
- Render Resolution left at 100% until the other changes are exhausted.
- Reflex left at its default Low Latency mode on compatible NVIDIA hardware; test Boost only when its extra power draw is acceptable.
Compare any two presets on four axes: sustained frame-time stability in the hardest activity, output resolution and render scale, peripheral awareness versus central target size, and responsiveness versus GPU power draw. That framework explains why a lower-looking preset can feel better in a match while a sharper preset may be preferable for exploration.
