Destiny 2: The Final Shape launched on June 4, 2024. Bungie announced that Destiny 2 would return online at 10 AM PT, while scheduled maintenance was set to finish at noon PT. Preload timing varied by platform, and the storage figures below are Bungie’s launch-era estimates—not today’s installation sizes.
When did The Final Shape release?
The Final Shape released on June 4, 2024. Bungie’s launch-week announcement said Update 8.0.0.1 would be playable across all platforms and regions. The expansion added a campaign, the Pale Heart destination, new Exotic gear, a raid and three new Supers. Bungie’s May 30, 2024 launch-week schedule contains the release logistics.
What time did Destiny 2 come back online?
Bungie advertised a 10 AM PT return online on June 4, 2024, but scheduled maintenance to finish at noon PT. Those are separate milestones: 10 AM PT was the announced return-online time, not the maintenance completion time. Destiny 2 had been taken offline for maintenance on June 3 at 9 AM PT.
When could each platform preload The Final Shape?
Bungie’s May 30, 2024 guidance gave platform-specific expectations. It described several preload windows as expected rather than guaranteed start times.

- PlayStation: From 10 AM PT on June 3, players could manually check for the Update 8.0.0.1 preload by selecting Destiny 2, pressing Options and choosing “Check for Updates.” Some players with automatic downloads enabled might have had access beginning June 1 after 10 AM PT.
- Xbox: Preload was expected shortly after Destiny 2 went offline on June 3; the preload section estimated around 10 AM PT.
- Steam: Preload was expected shortly after the game went offline, with the update expected to enter the download queue automatically.
- Epic Games Store: Preload was expected shortly after the game went offline, with the update expected to enter the queue automatically.
- Microsoft Store: Preload was expected shortly after the game went offline, with the update expected to enter the queue automatically.
Bungie’s post gave 9 AM PT as the start of the published downtime timeline, while the Xbox and PC preload instructions referred to the game going offline around 10 AM PT. Treat the preload timing as an estimate, not as a second definitive downtime start.
How much storage did The Final Shape need?
The following are the launch-era figures Bungie published on May 30, 2024. “Install size” is the stated installed footprint; “space needed” is the storage required for current Destiny 2 players to install the update. Bungie said install size could vary with installed languages and gave a maximum possible size.

On Steam, it estimated up to 144.20 GB for the existing install plus up to 155.50 GB for the preload, for 299.70 GB total. The figures are tied to the 2024 launch and should not be used to plan a current update.
Are those Destiny 2 storage requirements still current?
No. Bungie’s current platform storage page reflects later updates, including Update 9.7.0. Bungie cautions that its listed values are estimates, that some platforms need extra space during download and installation, and that major updates can change the requirements. Check that page before freeing storage for a present-day install or update.

Bungie’s edition guide distinguished the digital game editions by their included content:
| Edition | Included content |
|---|---|
| Standard Edition | Campaign, one active Year 7 Episode, the Pale Heart destination, new Exotic gear, a new raid and three new Supers. |
| + Annual Pass Edition | Standard Edition content, all three Year 7 Episodes, the Dungeon Key and additional items. |
| Physical Collector’s Edition | Annual Pass content plus physical collectibles and other extras, including a Destiny 1 Tower replica, miniature Zavala, Ikora and Cayde figures, a digital soundtrack, a letter, autograph book, character photographs, ramen shop tickets, a mission patch, lore book and unique emblem code. |
The Collector’s Edition was a separate physical product; its collectibles were not part of the Standard Edition. Bungie’s launch article identified the new raid as Salvation’s Edge, which launched June 7, 2024, and said the first Episode, Echoes, would begin June 11. Bungie’s help FAQ explains that Episodes began with The Final Shape and Year 7, and that each Episode included its own Season Pass. Bungie’s Episodes FAQ provides that format context.

What is Destiny 2’s status now?
The June 2024 launch schedule is historical. In a May 21, 2026 statement, Bungie said the June 9, 2026 update would be Destiny 2’s final live-service content update, while the game would remain playable: “Though active development may be concluding, we will ensure that Destiny 2 remains playable, just as the original Destiny is today.” Bungie’s announcement describes that later change in status.
