To solve the Warlord’s Ruin prison puzzle, read the two skeleton tally clues and make six gears match their clockwise/counterclockwise split. The values always total six. Shoot each gear through the cell openings until the required number spins in each direction, make sure none are stopped, and then shoot the glowing lever to unlock the cells.
Warlord’s Ruin’s prison puzzle is solved by matching six gear directions to the two skeleton clues. Read both tally values: together they total six, and they tell you how many gears must spin clockwise and how many must spin counterclockwise. Shoot each gear through the cell openings until the required split is active, then shoot the glowing lever to open the cells.

The rest of the dungeon follows the same broad principle: complete the mechanic safely, create a damage window, and move before the arena or environmental hazards become the real threat. This walkthrough covers access, the route to every boss, the Rathil cage mechanic, the randomized cell puzzle, both later encounters, and the mistakes most likely to cost a run.
Before you launch Warlord’s Ruin
Warlord’s Ruin is a three-player Destiny 2 dungeon in the EDZ. Dungeons support fireteams of up to three Guardians and are built for coordinated endgame PvE, although solo players can complete them as a challenge.

The dungeon originally released on December 1, 2023, during Season of the Wish. Access is currently tied to the Lightfall Dungeon Key, which covers Warlord’s Ruin and Ghosts of the Deep. Dungeon access is an account entitlement: each player who enters should have access on their own account, because the entitlement is not officially game-shareable.
How to access and launch it
- Visit Ikora Rey in the Tower and acquire In the Shadow of the Mountain if the quest is required on your account.
- Open the EDZ in the Director.
- Select the Warlord’s Ruin node and launch the activity.
Destiny 2’s Director layout and presentation can change between updates. If the node has moved, the important requirements remain the same: the account needs the appropriate dungeon entitlement, and the activity is launched from its current Director location rather than from a normal EDZ landing zone.
Practical preparation
- Use a survivable build rather than building exclusively for maximum boss damage.
- Bring dependable mid- and long-range damage for exposed arenas and elevated platforms.
- Carry a weapon that can quickly remove Taken and Scorn majors.
- Use a heavy weapon suited to boss damage, while recognizing that the best option changes with balance patches, seasonal artifact perks, and your build.
- Agree on simple callouts before starting: left/right, high/low, near/far, clockwise/counterclockwise, and the two prison tally values.
A thermal or infrared sight can make the prison gears easier to see against the dark walls. It is a convenience, not a requirement. For a first clear, consistency matters more than chasing the highest possible damage number: Warlord’s Ruin repeatedly asks you to cross exposed areas, manage hazards or debuffs, cleanse objectives, and return to a safe damage position.

Opening traversal: reaching Rathil
Follow the route through the snowy mountain fortress and its ruined structures. The opening mixes Scorn combat, Taken corruption, narrow platforms, jumps, and environmental hazards. It is primarily a movement-and-combat introduction, but rushing it can waste lives before the first boss.
When you reach an unfamiliar room, look for safe ledges before starting a fight or making a jump. Clear enemies that can knock you from a platform, and avoid attempting difficult jumps while under fire. If one player knows the route, let that player lead while the others watch for enemies and revive locations.
First encounter: Rathil, First Broken Knight of Fikrul
Rathil begins immune. Your objective is to activate the iron lanterns that appear around the arena. Each lantern has a white circular zone. Stand in the zone long enough to cleanse or activate the lantern; clearing its corruption advances the encounter toward a damage window. Activating additional lanterns extends the available damage opportunity.
Rathil encounter loop
- Survive Rathil’s attacks and clear enough Scorn to move safely.
- When the lanterns appear, locate the white circles and move into them.
- Cleanse or activate the lanterns while keeping the team together enough to help one another.
- Use the resulting damage window on Rathil.
- Repeat the lantern cycle until the boss is defeated.
Do not let the lantern objective split the team across dangerous parts of the arena. One player being isolated can turn a manageable cleanse into a death or a difficult revive. The extra lanterns are useful because they extend damage, but they are not worth abandoning a teammate or losing control of the surrounding Scorn.
Rathil’s prison cages
During the encounter, players can be teleported into suspended Taken prison cages. Three Taken eyes around the cage must be destroyed to release the trapped player.

The trapped Guardian should shoot the eyes that are visible and reachable, while teammates should immediately help with eyes positioned outside the cage or at an awkward angle. Do not assume the imprisoned player can always see or reach all three. Calling out the remaining eye and its position is faster than repeatedly searching the cage.
Once Rathil falls, the fireteam is teleported into the hanging prison-cell puzzle.
Warlord’s Ruin prison-cell puzzle solution
The prison puzzle is randomized in its tally values and gear positions, but the underlying solution does not change. You must set six gears to the directional split shown by the two skeleton clues.

They always total six. One value is the number of gears that must spin in one direction, and the other is the number that must spin in the opposite direction. Set all six gears accordingly—one shot starts counterclockwise, two shots stops the gear, and three shots starts clockwise—then shoot the glowing lever to unlock the cells.
Step 1: Read both skeleton clues
Two cells contain skeleton clues beside tally marks. Read both values before shooting anything. The values always add up to six because there are six gears to configure.
The clue colors or visual distinctions identify the two direction counts. One set corresponds to clockwise and the other to counterclockwise. Do not rely on a memorized color rule from a screenshot or video if the visual presentation is unclear; identify which tally set represents each direction in the room and communicate it to the team.
For example, if the clues show 2 and 4, the final state must contain two gears spinning in one direction and four gears spinning in the other. The particular identity of those gears does not matter. You do not need to assign a specific gear to a specific tally mark.
Step 2: Find and call out all six gears
The gears are distributed around the prison and can be shot through the cell openings. They blend into the dark architecture, so scan the walls and surrounding structures carefully. A thermal or infrared sight can make them easier to distinguish.

Use a callout system that everyone understands. For example, label visible gears as left high, left low, right high, right low, near, and far. The exact names do not matter; consistency does.
Step 3: Cycle each gear into the required state
The standard firing cycle works as follows:
- First shot: the gear begins spinning counterclockwise.
- Second shot: the gear stops.
- Third shot: the gear begins spinning clockwise.
Continue cycling as necessary until the gear is in the required direction or stopped. A stopped gear counts toward neither side of the puzzle. Every gear that is meant to contribute to the solution must be visibly spinning.
Assign one player to operate a gear at a time or have each player take responsibility for the gears they can see. Before firing, confirm the gear’s current state. Shooting a gear that is already correct can move it out of the solution and force the team to start checking again.
Step 4: Verify the directional split
Before touching the lock, confirm all of the following:
- Both skeleton clues were read.
- The two tally values total six.
- The correct number of gears is spinning clockwise.
- The remaining gears are spinning counterclockwise.
- No gear is stopped.
- The team is using the same interpretation of clockwise and counterclockwise.
It is not enough for the correct number of gears to be active overall. The directions must match the two clue values, and a stationary gear cannot be used as an unused sixth position.
Step 5: Shoot the glowing lever
Once the six gears show the required split, shoot the glowing lever or lock mechanism near the appropriate cell. The prison doors should unlock. Collect the reward and continue through the route.
Common prison-puzzle mistakes
| Mistake | What is actually required |
|---|---|
| Reading the tally marks as shot counts | The values describe how many gears must spin in each direction. |
| Using only one skeleton clue | Both clues are needed to determine the full six-gear split. |
| Leaving a gear stopped | A stopped gear contributes to neither direction. |
| Confusing clockwise and counterclockwise | Watch the gear’s visible rotation and establish one team-wide callout. |
| Trying the lever too early | The lock works only after all six gears match the required directional count. |
| Shooting correct gears repeatedly | Confirm each gear’s state before firing so you do not rotate it out of position. |
Solo-player advice and possible progression problems
Solo players must inspect the cells, read both clues, locate all six gears, and operate them without teammates to provide alternate viewpoints. Scan every accessible opening before committing to a direction, and use a visibility aid if the gears are difficult to distinguish.

There have been player reports of cell-door or traversal behavior that can block access to the viewpoints needed to solve the puzzle. A report is not proof that the puzzle is universally broken in the current build, but it is worth recognizing the difference between a wrong solution and broken geometry. If a door appears both open and closed, or the route to a clue cell is visibly blocked so that the required information cannot be reached, capture the behavior and consider restarting the activity. For a persistent issue, consult Bungie’s current support channels rather than relying on an old workaround.

Traversal after the prison
The route beyond the cells becomes a maze-like traversal section with jumps, pits, narrow paths, and traps. Some corridors contain spike-wall hazards triggered by pressure plates or floor plates. A missed jump can kill a Guardian or send them back to an earlier section.
- Enter unfamiliar rooms slowly and look for the trigger plate before crossing.
- Check the landing point before committing to a jump.
- Clear enemies that can push or stagger you near ledges.
- Let the most confident jumper lead, then call out safe platforms to the rest of the team.
- Do not sprint through a corridor simply because the route looks short; pressure-triggered traps are often the real obstacle.
Second encounter: Locus of Wailing Grief
The Locus encounter continues Warlord’s Ruin’s objective-before-damage structure. The arena contains Scorn enemies, Taken pressure, blighted totems, and a cold or curse-management component. Your team must collect or activate the encounter objectives, manage the environmental pressure, and cleanse or activate the relevant standards or totems before the boss can be damaged effectively.
Locus encounter loop
- Clear enough enemies to make movement through the arena safe.
- Watch for the Scorn mechanics that create, expose, or guard the blighted totems.
- Capture or activate the necessary objectives.
- Manage the Biting Cold-style environmental pressure by rotating through safe areas or cleansing at the appropriate banner standards.
- Use the resulting damage window on the Locus.
- Repeat the objective and cleanse cycle until the boss is defeated.
The exact enemy pressure and damage timing can change with Destiny 2 updates, so treat the loop—not a fixed damage-phase duration—as the reliable strategy. Remaining in the wrong area too long can make the cold or curse pressure more dangerous than the boss itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUseful team assignments
- Objective player: watches the side of the arena where the next totem or objective needs attention.
- Add-control player: handles dangerous Scorn, Taken, and majors so the objective route remains usable.
- Rotation caller: announces the next safe area and keeps the team from lingering after the objective is complete.
These are flexible responsibilities rather than permanent classes. The important part is that someone is watching the mechanic while the others create enough space to complete it. When the damage window opens, regroup before committing heavy ammunition so the team is not forced to damage from three disconnected positions.
Final encounter: Hefnd’s Vengeance, Blighted Chimaera
Hefnd’s Vengeance, Blighted Chimaera, is the final boss of Warlord’s Ruin. The fight spans multiple elevated platforms and combines the dungeon’s recurring Taken, Scorn, blighted-totem, curse, and movement pressures.
Final-boss encounter loop
- Clear nearby enemies and identify the platform currently relevant to the encounter.
- Complete the objective sequence involving blighted totems and the encounter’s curse or cold-management mechanic.
- Use the resulting damage window while watching the platform edges and incoming Taken attacks.
- Move upward or to the next platform when the fight transitions.
- Repeat the objective, damage, and relocation cycle until the final damage sequence ends.
The large arena can make the boss appear less dangerous than it is. Hefnd’s fight can force movement during or between damage opportunities, and standing near an edge leaves little room to recover from a knockback or evasive move. Call the next safe position before the group is forced to relocate, and keep resurrection locations and escape routes in mind.
Movement is part of the mechanic, not an interruption between mechanics. A team that waits until a platform is already unsafe will often lose a player during the transition and have too little time to recover. Clear the immediate threats, complete the objective, damage from a stable position, and move deliberately when the encounter advances.
Rewards from Warlord’s Ruin
Warlord’s Ruin has its own dungeon armor, legendary weapons, Triumphs, and collectible-related objectives. Its notable Exotic sidearm is Buried Bloodline.

Drop tables, acquisition requirements, and farming rules can change, so an old item list should not be treated as a permanent source of truth. If you are targeting a specific weapon, armor piece, or Triumph, check a current loot table or Destiny reference after a major game update. Bungie has previously patched Warlord’s Ruin issues involving crashes when returning to orbit, chest access, and Triumph rewards; those fixes are a reminder that reward behavior and encounter bugs can change over time.
Warlord’s Ruin troubleshooting checklist
The prison door will not open
- Read both skeleton clues again.
- Confirm that their values add up to six.
- Check that you set the correct number clockwise and the remainder counterclockwise.
- Make sure every one of the six gears is spinning; a stopped gear does not count.
- Verify that you did not confuse the two visual tally sets.
- Shoot the glowing lever only after the full configuration is active.
You cannot find a gear
Search the walls and architecture around every accessible cell opening, not just the area directly in front of your character. Change your viewing angle, use a thermal or infrared sight if available, and have teammates describe the gear’s position using a shared callout. The gears are deliberately easy to lose against the dark prison background.
A player is stuck in Rathil’s cage
Look for all three Taken eyes around the cage. The trapped player may not have a clear angle on every eye, so teammates should shoot the difficult ones. Call out the remaining eye rather than waiting for the imprisoned player to discover it alone.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe team keeps dying during damage
Reduce the damage ambition and improve the setup. Use the complete mechanic cycle, clear enough majors to create safe movement, and regroup before firing heavy weapons. In both the Locus and Hefnd encounters, the arena’s hazards and relocation demands are part of the fight; damage is not successful if it leaves the team unable to survive the next transition.
Summary
For the cell puzzle, the two skeleton clues provide a six-gear directional split. Set the required number of gears clockwise and the rest counterclockwise, ensure none are stopped, and shoot the glowing lever. For the dungeon as a whole, prioritize survivability, communicate movement, and treat each damage phase as the reward for completing the objective rather than as the main mechanic.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you access Warlord’s Ruin?
Warlord’s Ruin requires the appropriate dungeon entitlement, currently the Lightfall Dungeon Key, and may also require acquiring In the Shadow of the Mountain from Ikora Rey. Launch it from the Warlord’s Ruin node in the EDZ Director. You do not need to own every Lightfall item simply because the dungeon is associated with the Lightfall Dungeon Key.
Can you complete the Warlord’s Ruin cell puzzle solo?
Yes. Dungeons are designed for up to three players but support solo challenges. The prison puzzle can be solved solo by reading both skeleton clues and individually locating all six gears. If cell geometry blocks access to a clue or gear, restart the activity and check current Bungie support information rather than assuming the puzzle logic is wrong.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What do the numbers in the Warlord’s Ruin prison puzzle mean?
The two tally values always total six. They indicate how many gears must spin in each direction, not how many times to shoot them. One shot starts a gear counterclockwise, two shots stop it, and three shots starts it clockwise. Set all six gears correctly, with none stopped, then shoot the glowing lever.
The Bottom Line
The prison puzzle solution is always: read both tally clues, make their six gears match the required clockwise/counterclockwise split, leave no gear stopped, and shoot the glowing lever. Rathil uses cleansed lanterns and cage eyes; Locus and Hefnd use objective, cleanse, damage, and relocation cycles.
