Detective Pikachu Swearing Guide: What Parents Should Know About the Movie’s Language

Yes. Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (2019) contains a small amount of mild profanity and frustrated exclamations, so it is not completely swear-free. Parent-guide reports identify “damn,” “hell,” “God” (including “good God”) and “stupid.” An IMDb user report also mentions a very faint “shit,” but that detail is unverified and may be easy to miss. The film is rated PG in the United States and Australia, with those ratings emphasizing broader content such as action, peril, fantasy violence and themes rather than providing a profanity count.

What swearing is in Detective Pikachu?

The clearest answer is that the movie uses mild language occasionally, rather than constant or harsh profanity. The examples identified in parental guides are ordinary exclamations and insults that many families would classify as low-level language:

Word or phrase How it is reported Confidence and context
“Damn” Listed in both the IMDb community guide and another parent guide. A directly reported example, but no independently verified transcript count is available.
“Hell” One guide gives “get me the hell out of here”; IMDb also lists “Hell.” Mild profanity used in an exclamation.
“God” / “good God” Included as an exclamation in a parent-guide report. Some households treat religious exclamations differently from conventional swear words.
“Stupid” Listed among the film’s mild language examples. An insult rather than profanity, but still potentially relevant for younger viewers.
“Shit” An IMDb user contribution says a faint instance can be heard at a restaurant. Not independently confirmed; do not treat it as certain or assume it is clearly audible in every version.

These reports establish that there is some cussing, but they do not establish an exact number of occurrences. The guides are parental-content notes, not an official screenplay or studio transcript. A viewer who wants a word-for-word inventory should therefore regard the list as indicative rather than exhaustive.

How strong is the language?

The available descriptions place the language in the mild category. Nothing in the cited guides identifies a sustained stream of profanity, a prominent profanity-centered scene or language that would normally be described as strong or extreme. The reported words are brief exclamations and a mild insult woven into an adventure film.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That distinction matters because “no strong profanity” and “no profanity” are different claims. A child may still notice “damn” or “hell,” and a family that avoids all religious exclamations may also object to “good God.” Conversely, many parents who accept a PG adventure movie will consider these isolated words manageable.

The uncertain restaurant report deserves special caution. IMDb’s parental guide is community submitted, and the note describes the word as faint. It may be difficult to hear, may be obscured by background sound, and has not been independently verified. It is responsible to mention it as a possibility rather than announce that the movie definitely contains a clearly audible instance.

What the U.S. PG rating tells you

The U.S. descriptor reproduced in IMDb’s parent guide rates the film PG for “action/peril, some rude and suggestive humor, and thematic elements.” The guide labels the profanity category mild. That combination is consistent with a family-oriented action comedy that includes occasional rough language, not with a film marketed as profanity-free.

A PG rating is a broad content signal, not a transcript. The descriptor groups several issues together, so it does not say how many times a word appears, whether a particular child will hear every instance, or which scene contains a phrase. It also does not guarantee that every family will find the language acceptable. Parents who use a strict no-swearing rule should treat the rating as a starting point and use the specific examples above for their decision.

The descriptor also calls out action and peril, rude and suggestive humor, and thematic elements. Those categories can affect suitability independently of language. If your concern is general content rather than cussing alone, the PG label should be read as a summary of the whole movie, not as a language certification.

What Australia’s classification says

Australia’s official Classification record lists Pokémon Detective Pikachu as PG. Its consumer advice reads: “Mild themes and fantasy violence, some scenes may scare younger children”. The record is dated 18 July 2019 and identifies a Blu-ray version.

This wording is jurisdiction-specific. It highlights themes, fantasy violence and potentially frightening scenes, rather than naming individual swear words. It therefore should not be interpreted as proof that the film contains no profanity. It does, however, reinforce the overall picture of a mild, family-targeted production whose content concerns extend beyond language.

Ratings can differ in wording between countries because classification systems apply their own standards. Quote the U.S. PG descriptor when discussing the U.S. release and the Australian PG advice when discussing Australia; neither system supplies a definitive profanity count.

Will younger children notice the words?

Children who repeat language

Young viewers often repeat a word because it is new or because a character says it emphatically. “Damn,” “hell” and “stupid” are recognizable words that may stand out even when used only once. If your child is at a stage where copying dialogue is a concern, previewing the film or watching together lets you address a phrase immediately.

Families avoiding religious exclamations

“God” and “good God” are included in the reported examples. Some families regard these as ordinary expressions; others avoid using God’s name as an exclamation. Decide according to your household rule rather than assuming that a PG rating settles the question.

Children sensitive to frightening material

The Australian advice specifically warns that some scenes may scare younger children and mentions fantasy violence. A child who is comfortable with the Pokémon premise may still react strongly to peril or an intense scene. That concern is separate from swearing, but it is part of the same age-suitability decision.

A practical parent checklist

  • If you require completely clean dialogue: do not assume the PG label means swear-free; the parent guides report several mild terms.
  • If mild PG language is acceptable: the reported examples are limited to low-level profanity, exclamations and “stupid,” with no verified exact count.
  • If one stronger word would be a deal-breaker: remember that the faint “shit” report is unconfirmed, but it cannot be ruled out from the available guide notes.
  • If your child is very young: consider the Australian warning about mild themes, fantasy violence and scenes that may scare younger children.
  • If you are deciding for a group: ask about both language rules and tolerance for peril, since children may react differently to each.

How to handle a question about a bad word

If a child asks what a word means, a short, calm answer is usually more useful than treating it as forbidden magic. You can explain that “damn” and “hell” are words some people use when frustrated, that “stupid” can hurt someone when aimed at a person, and that your family chooses different words. There is no need to repeat a questionable line as though it were confirmed; you can say that a parental guide reports a faint word that some viewers may not hear.

Watching together also gives you control over the conversation. Pause if necessary, explain your household standard, and move on without making the language more memorable than the story. This approach works whether your rule is “avoid all swearing” or “mild PG language is acceptable in context.”

Why different parent guides may sound inconsistent

Content guides are made for practical audience advice, not for producing a legally definitive script. One guide may list every phrase its contributor noticed; another may omit a word that was quiet, obscured by music or interpreted as an ordinary exclamation. That is why “damn” and “hell” appear consistently while the restaurant “shit” note remains uncertain.

There is also no named published study or official profanity statistic for this film. No independently verified word-by-word count is available from the cited material. Avoid articles or posts that claim an exact total unless they provide a reliable transcript and explain how alternate audio mixes were handled.

Bottom line for families

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu has some mild swearing. Expect reported uses of “damn,” “hell,” “God” or “good God,” and “stupid”; an IMDb contributor additionally reports a faint “shit,” but that last item is not confirmed. The U.S. PG descriptor and Australia’s PG advice both point to a broader package of mild, fantasy-adventure content rather than a profanity-free movie. Families comfortable with occasional PG-level language will likely find the issue minor, while households requiring completely clean dialogue should preview it or choose another film.
