Then close third-party apps, try a different Steam Play compatibility tool—beginning with the latest Proton—and, if the game launches but is unstable, lower its graphics settings. These are diagnostic steps, not guaranteed fixes; change one thing at a time so you can tell what affects your problem.
Start with Steam Deck basics
Steam’s Steam Deck troubleshooting guide recommends checking for SteamOS updates and restarting when the device or an app is unstable.
- Open the Deck’s Settings and check for available SteamOS software updates.
- Install any available update, then restart the Steam Deck.
- Launch Detroit: Become Human again and note whether it crashes before the game opens or later during play.
Close third-party applications
Steam also suggests disabling third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode. Exit those applications, restart the Deck, and retry the game. If the crash stops, re-enable tools individually to identify whether one of them is involved.
Try a different Proton compatibility tool
If the game still crashes, use Steam’s per-game Compatibility setting to test another Steam Play compatibility tool. Steam’s guide says to try the latest Proton version; it does not identify one Proton release as a universal fix for this game.

- Open the game in your Steam Library.
- Open its Properties, then select Compatibility.
- Enable the option to force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select the latest Proton version available in the list and launch the game.
Steam cautions that forcing a compatibility tool may prompt a download of the Windows version if only the Linux version is installed. Allow Steam to finish any required download before testing.
If the game launches but crashes or stutters during play
Reduce graphics demands in the game’s settings, lowering the overall preset or adjusting individual options. Retest after each change. Steam recommends lowering graphics settings to reduce system load, but the available guidance does not establish a particular setting or preset as the fix for Detroit: Become Human.

Steam Community discussions include individual reports of launch problems, stuttering, different Proton choices, and differing settings outcomes. Those posts are anecdotal rather than controlled compatibility tests, so treat suggested configurations as experiments—not as evidence that a particular option will work for everyone.
Verify the game files
If the steps above do not resolve the crash, verify the installed files through Steam. Quantic Dream’s general PC support page includes file verification among its troubleshooting advice; it is not Steam Deck-specific.

When to contact support
Quantic Dream explains that its unexpected-crash notification means the game encountered an error and crashed. If you cannot relaunch it, the company directs players to contact Quantic Dream support. Steam’s Deck guide also recommends contacting Steam Support if its troubleshooting steps do not help.
For a useful support request, include your Deck model, SteamOS version, selected compatibility tool, what happens immediately before the failure, and whether the crash occurs at launch or during play. The available support guidance does not establish a current exact compatibility badge or a single SteamOS/Proton combination responsible for individual crashes.
