Devil May Cry 4: Refrain was a real Android game, but the headline belongs to 2012 rather than 2026. Capcom released the mobile adaptation for iPhone and iPod touch on February 3, 2011, then a Japan-only Android version on November 1, 2012 through the G-Gee distribution ecosystem. No currently active official Google Play listing has been verified, and Capcom records the iOS release as discontinued from March 29, 2021.
What Devil May Cry 4: Refrain actually was
Devil May Cry 4: Refrain was a mobile adaptation of Devil May Cry 4, not the unchanged console game, Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition, or the later Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat. It rebuilt the action around touchscreen-era hardware and virtual controls while retaining the gothic setting, sword-and-gun combat, Nero’s Devil Bringer, combo-based fighting, red-orb upgrades and boss encounters.

Capcom’s launch description listed 10 levels, eight boss fights, Retina-display graphics and Game Center achievements. The mobile campaign was reorganized rather than simply reproducing the console structure: Nero and Dante were presented as separate content, and secondary historical references report that Dante was added through an update.
Capcom’s original preview is archived at Capcom USA; its launch feature list appears in the February 3, 2011 release announcement.

The release timeline
| Date | Event | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| January 11, 2011 | Capcom preview | Capcom announced the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad project, expected a $6.99 price, and outlined a 10-level plan. |
| February 3, 2011 | iPhone and iPod touch launch | The U.S. launch announcement offered a limited-time introductory price of $1.99. That promotion was not necessarily the permanent price. |
| November 1, 2012 | Android release in Japan | Release-history records place the Android edition in Japan, distributed through GMO Game Center with G-Gee identified in the release notes. |
| March 29, 2021 | iOS distribution ended | Capcom’s Japanese support index lists the iPhone/iPad title as discontinued. |
The Android edition arrived about 21 months after the iOS launch. It was therefore not a simultaneous worldwide mobile release.
The Android date and territory are recorded by MobyGames’ release history. MobyGames also catalogs the title as a mobile adaptation at its game overview.

What “only in Japan for now” meant
The wording was broadly correct for Android, with an important qualifier. The documented Android release territory is Japan, and G-Gee—not a normal worldwide Google Play launch—was the associated channel. Historical secondary references connect that edition with Xperia Play-era hardware and G-Gee exclusivity; that should be treated as historical database attribution, not as a current Capcom device specification.
It would be wrong to call the entire game Japan-exclusive. Capcom publicly announced and marketed the iOS version internationally, including a U.S. launch. “Only in Japan” applied to the Android edition described in the 2012 release record.

Android
The historical Japanese release is well documented, but no currently active official Google Play listing or G-Gee purchase route has been verified. The safest current description is that official Android availability is unconfirmed and apparently discontinued, not that a new Android version is available.
Archived APKs and emulation
Unofficial APK mirrors can be modified, incomplete, region-locked, malware-infected or unauthorized. They are not evidence of an official release and should not be presented as a recommended download. Community compatibility reports for preservation or emulation projects likewise do not constitute Capcom support or a modern Android port; one example of such community reporting is AppDB.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the original headline got right—and what needs updating
- Right: an Android version genuinely existed, and the documented release was Japan-only.
- Needs a date: the Android launch was November 1, 2012, not an imminent 2026 release.
- Needs a platform distinction: the iOS edition had an international launch in 2011, so the whole game was not Japan-exclusive.
- Needs a format distinction: Refrain was a touchscreen-focused adaptation with a modified campaign structure, not simply console Devil May Cry 4 on Android.
- Needs a price caveat: $1.99 was a limited-time U.S. launch promotion; Capcom’s earlier preview cited an expected $6.99 price, and neither figure is a current price.
