Rafa is the safest first pick for most Borderlands 4 players: his Exo-Soldier identity and gun-damage focus make him effective while you learn the loot, movement and skill-tree systems. Pick Vex for elemental Siren abilities and a spectral companion, Amon for melee durability, Harlowe for crowd control and team setup, or C4SH for a controllable, high-variance gambler style. There is no permanently best Vault Hunter; the right choice depends on how you want to fight.
Quick class recommendation
| What you want | Pick | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Reliable gun damage and a straightforward first run | Rafa | His Exo-Soldier kit centers on digistructed weapons, and PC Gamer’s dated guide chose him as its single best overall gun-damage pick. |
| Elemental powers, Siren abilities and a companion | Vex | Her phase energy, spectral familiar Trouble and weapon-element attunement support elemental loadouts. |
| Melee pressure, toughness and defensive tools | Amon | Plarium describes him as a heat-based melee and defensive brawler with sustain and crowd control. |
| Control, combos and support for a team | Harlowe | Her design emphasizes controlling enemies and setting up combo-based team plays. |
| Cards, dice, risk and adjustable randomness | C4SH | His Cleromancy, Luck of the Draw and Chaos Walking trees use dice, cards and dual revolvers while letting you influence the outcomes. |
These are playstyle matches, not a permanent tier list. Plarium’s July 2026 guide says every Vault Hunter can be viable with the right build and evaluates individual skill trees rather than declaring one character universally strongest.
How Borderlands 4 classes work
Every Vault Hunter has three signature Action Skills, three branching passive paths, augments, capstone abilities and a unique Trait. Gearbox creative director Graeme Timmins summarized the design in the April 30, 2025 PlayStation Blog: “Each Vault Hunter class in Borderlands 4 offers a unique playstyle that empowers you to choose from three signature abilities that serve as your Action Skills.” Your starting choice therefore sets a combat identity, but it does not lock you into one weapon type or one fixed build.
What that means for a first character
- Action Skills matter: choose whether you want your power button to add weapons, summon a companion, control space, defend you or create high-variance effects.
- Passive paths create the specialization: the same Vault Hunter can be tuned toward different damage, utility or survival goals.
- Gear still matters: the class defines how you use loot; it does not replace the game’s weapon and equipment choices.
Rafa: the dependable gunfighter
Choose Rafa if you want to concentrate on shooting rather than managing a complicated setup. His Exo-Soldier identity is built around digistructed weapons, giving him the clearest “pick up a gun and get to work” fantasy. PC Gamer’s guide selected Rafa as its best overall class for gun-damage buffs, but that is a dated editorial opinion rather than a controlled comparison.

Rafa suits you if
- You prefer consistent mid- or long-range gunplay.
- You are new to Borderlands’ loot, skill trees and movement systems.
- You want a forgiving first run without relying on random outcomes or elaborate enemy setup.
Trade-off
Rafa is the least specialized choice if your main attraction is a Siren’s elemental fantasy, close-range brawling or a support-heavy control role.
Vex: elemental Siren power with a familiar
Vex is the natural choice for players who want Borderlands’ Siren identity: phase energy, supernatural abilities and a companion named Trouble. Her Trait attunes Action Skills to the element of the equipped weapon, so changing your weapon’s element is part of the build rather than a cosmetic choice. Gearbox’s official description makes her especially appealing to players who enjoy matching elements to enemies and loadouts.
Vex suits you if
- You want your Action Skills and weapons to reinforce each other elementally.
- You like having Trouble, the spectral familiar, as part of your combat identity.
- You enjoy experimenting with elemental gear instead of using one dependable damage pattern.
Trade-off
Vex asks you to pay closer attention to weapon elements and skill interactions than a simple gun-focused Rafa setup.

Amon: melee pressure and defensive brawling
Pick Amon when you want to close distance, absorb punishment and keep attacking. Plarium characterizes him as a heat-based melee and defensive brawler with sustain and crowd-control tools. His appeal is not just damage at point-blank range; it is the ability to turn durability and enemy disruption into part of your offense.

- You prefer close-range combat and direct engagements.
- You want defensive tools that help you stay in the fight.
- You enjoy managing a heat-based rhythm while controlling groups of enemies.
Trade-off
Melee positioning carries more risk than standing back with a rifle, especially while you are still learning enemy attacks and arenas.
Harlowe: control, setup and cooperative combos
Harlowe is the best fit for players who enjoy shaping an encounter before finishing it. Plarium describes her as control-oriented, with combo and support strengths. Rather than measuring her value only by immediate weapon damage, judge her by how effectively she limits enemies and creates openings for herself or teammates.

Harlowe suits you if
- You like grouping, slowing or otherwise controlling enemies.
- You enjoy setting up a sequence instead of pressing one damage skill repeatedly.
- You regularly play co-op and want your abilities to improve team combinations.
Trade-off
Her payoff depends more on timing and encounter setup than Rafa’s direct gun-buff approach, so she may feel less immediate during a first few hours.
C4SH: a gambler’s class with DLC requirements
C4SH the Rogue is designed around risk that you can influence rather than pure chaos. Gearbox names his three trees Cleromancy, Luck of the Draw and Chaos Walking; his abilities use dice, cards and dual revolvers. Choose him if making decisions around uncertain outcomes is part of the fun.

Who can play C4SH
Story Pack 1, Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned, is required to create and play C4SH. Borderlands Support’s March 26, 2026 update says he can be used across the entire game once unlocked. The pack is included in the Super Deluxe Edition and Vault Hunter Pack, or can be purchased separately.

What arrived with the C4SH update
The same update increased the level cap by 10, to 60, and added one new class mod for each Vault Hunter. Those additions affect every class, but they do not remove the purchase requirement for C4SH.
C4SH suits you if
- You enjoy cards, dice and changing combat plans.
- You want to make randomness part of your build rather than eliminate it.
- You already own Story Pack 1 or a qualifying edition and want a different experience from the launch roster.
Rafa or Vex: which should you choose?
Choose Rafa if your priority is dependable gun damage with minimal setup. Choose Vex if the Siren fantasy, elemental weapon matching and Trouble matter more than simplicity. Neither choice is established as a universal winner; they reward different kinds of attention.
Best class for solo play
For a first solo character, Rafa is the safest recommendation because his gun-damage focus is easy to apply while you learn the game. Amon is a strong alternative if you prefer to survive by staying in the fight and using defensive melee tools. Vex can be excellent for solo players who enjoy elemental experimentation, while Harlowe’s control remains useful but asks for more deliberate setup. C4SH is viable for solo play after unlocking him, provided you enjoy managing his variable effects.
Best Value
- BORDERLANDS 4 — Enter Kairos in Borderlands 4, a looter shooter packed with Vault Hunters, wild weapons, and action against a ruthless tyrant.
- FOUR VAULT HUNTERS — Play as one of four new Vault Hunters, each with unique abilities unleashed through powerful Action Skills.
- BUILD AND LOOT — Shape your playstyle with branching skill trees, then hunt for wild weapons and powerful gear across a deep loot chase.
- BREAK THE TIMEKEEPER’S ORDER — Battle the oppressive Timekeeper as a world-altering catastrophe unleashes Mayhem across Kairos.
- EXPLORE KAIROS — Ride a hover bike through lush fields, towering peaks, and deadly deserts while taking on quests, dynamic events, and warring factions.
Best class for beginners
Start with Rafa unless you already know you want another fantasy. Borderlands 4 gives every class three Action Skills and three passive branches, so “beginner-friendly” mainly means how quickly the core loop makes sense. Rafa’s weapon-first approach has the shortest learning curve; Harlowe and Vex become clearer once you are comfortable reading skill interactions, and C4SH is best saved for players who actively want uncertainty.
A four-question way to decide
- Preferred range: Do you want to fight mostly close, at mid-range or from a distance?
- Source of power: Should your effectiveness come mainly from guns, active skills, a companion, defensive melee or controlled randomness?
- Setup tolerance: Do you want immediate damage, or are you happy to prepare combos and match elements?
- Solo or co-op: Are you choosing for your own survival, or for control and combinations that help a team?
If your answers are mixed, Rafa is the neutral choice. If one fantasy clearly dominates, follow it: Vex for elements, Amon for melee, Harlowe for control or C4SH for luck-driven play.
How stable is the recommendation?
Borderlands 4 launched with Vex, Rafa, Amon and Harlowe on September 12, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. C4SH arrived on March 26, 2026 with Story Pack 1. No controlled cross-class win-rate, damage-per-second test or player-survey statistic establishes an objective best class in the available evidence. Balance patches, new class mods, level-cap changes and endgame updates can shift which builds feel strongest, so treat rankings as time-specific guidance rather than a permanent verdict.
