Devil May Cry HD Collection is a convenient way to play the original Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 2, and Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening Special Edition. Reviews are generally favorable, but the collection is best for players who want those older games in one package—not anyone expecting a modern remake or a substantial overhaul. Newcomers should also be ready for sparse guidance.
What games are in Devil May Cry HD Collection?
The collection includes three early series entries: Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 2, and Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening Special Edition. The package’s main appeal is having all three together; that does not mean reviewers considered them equally strong. One Metacritic review excerpt favored the first and third games over the second.

Review excerpts recognize the appeal of revisiting the games with upscaled graphics and achievement or trophy support. Gaming Age, in a review dated April 9, 2012, described those additions as reasons the collection could appeal even to returning players. Other criticism focuses on how little the package updates the games and how dated its presentation can feel today.
#1 Best Overall
- Featuring Dante, Devil May Cry HD Collection is full of the award-winning gameplay and style that the series has become known for, now playable on modern consoles.
- Originally debuting in 2001, Devil May Cry immediately redefined the action genre, with its signature emphasis on slaying demons with style.
- The half-demon Dante uses his innate abilities and the powers of ancient demons to fight a one-man war against the forces of darkness and save humanity from damnation
- Devil May Cry 2 released in 2003 and centers on Dante and his new devilishly agile partner Lucia in their fight to defeat a man hell-bent on achieving supreme power.
- Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening, featured a number of enhancements, including the opportunity to play as Dante's twin brother, Vergil, as well as the addition of Bloody Palace Mode and Turbo Mode.Battery: no battery used
What are the collection’s strengths and drawbacks?
Why fans may want it
- It bundles three foundational entries rather than requiring separate purchases for each game.
- Reviewers have praised the upscaled presentation and achievement or trophy support as useful additions for replaying the games.
- Players who enjoy older action-game design can experience the early series in one package.
Why some players may hesitate
- The collection preserves older games; reviewers have criticized dated visuals and technical presentation.
- One review excerpt said the package did not feel like a definitive edition and faulted its insufficient in-game tutorials. For a newcomer, limited guidance may make the games harder to approach.
- The added features are relatively limited, so players seeking a major modernization should temper expectations.
Which platforms have the collection?
Metacritic lists versions for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Capcom’s 2017 announcement specified digital and retail releases for PC, PS4, and Xbox One on March 13, 2018. Capcom’s original announcement described PS3 and Xbox 360 retail availability in North America and Europe. These release details do not establish current stock or pricing.
If you are choosing between PS4 and Xbox, compare the exact edition and current listing for the console you own. Do not assume every platform version has identical features based on the collection’s name alone. For a physical search, use the platform-specific wording “Devil May Cry HD Collection PS4” and check that the listing is the PS4 edition before buying.

Playing the PS4 version on PS5
The PlayStation Store says the PS4 title is playable on PS5, with the qualification that some PS4 features may be absent. That compatibility note does not guarantee every PS4 feature will work on PS5.
Should you buy Devil May Cry HD Collection?
It is a sensible choice if you want these three early games together and are comfortable with older presentation and limited onboarding. It is a less certain fit if you are new to the series and expect extensive tutorials, or if you want a comprehensive modern remaster. Before purchasing, confirm the platform and edition, check the current price and availability in your region, and consider how much dated presentation affects your enjoyment.

Capcom announced the PC, PS4, and Xbox One versions at a $29.99 launch price in 2017, with release set for March 13, 2018. That is historical launch pricing, not a current price. Capcom’s original PS3 and Xbox 360 announcement listed a $39.99 MSRP for retail availability in North America and Europe; that, too, is historical.
