Usually, you cannot answer this from the word “Dexterity” alone. Dexterity is a game-specific stat. In one game it may affect weapon scaling, in another it may change casting, and in another it may have no relationship to animation speed. If you mean Elden Ring, the available official notes show that FromSoftware changed the attack motion of selected weapon types and skills, but they do not establish a rule that raising Dexterity generally makes every weapon swing faster.
That distinction matters when you are deciding where to spend levels. A quicker-looking attack can come from a weapon’s built-in animation, a skill adjustment, or a patch change rather than from the Dexterity attribute.

The short answer: name the game first
“Does dexterity help you swing faster?” is an incomplete mechanics question until the game is identified. Stat names are not standardized. Two role-playing games can use the same attribute label while assigning it entirely different jobs, and a game can change those jobs in a later patch.
There are at least three separate questions hidden in the wording:
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
- Does the Dexterity stat increase the damage of weapons that scale from it?
- Does it reduce an equipment or ability requirement?
- Does it shorten the time between attack inputs, or speed up the visible attack animation?
Only the third question is about swinging faster, and it must be documented by that game’s mechanics or tested under controlled conditions. A higher damage number, a different weapon, or a balance patch that accelerates one move is not proof of a universal Dexterity-to-speed relationship.
What the available Elden Ring evidence actually shows
The clearest official evidence relevant to this question is an Elden Ring update-file entry dated April 19, 2022. Those notes describe increased attack-motion speed for selected weapon types and skills, along with casting-motion adjustments for selected spells. The wording documents particular balance changes; it does not say that increasing Dexterity generally speeds up weapon swings.
That is an important difference in scope. “The animation for this weapon or skill was changed” is a statement about a named move. “Dexterity makes weapons swing faster” is a character-stat rule. The first does not establish the second.

The April 19, 2022 notes are also historical. Elden Ring has received later updates, so a current answer about a particular move should be checked against the latest official patch documentation. A change recorded in 2022 should not automatically be treated as the present behavior of every weapon, skill, or spell.

What you can safely conclude
- Some Elden Ring attack animations were adjusted by patch notes.
- The adjustments applied to selected weapon types and skills rather than to every attack in the game.
- Selected spell-casting motions were adjusted as well, which is a separate category from weapon-swing speed.
- The cited notes do not establish a general rule that adding Dexterity shortens all weapon attack animations.
Therefore, an Elden Ring player should not allocate Dexterity solely on the assumption that every weapon will become faster. First identify the weapon, its scaling and requirements, and the exact attack or skill whose timing you care about. Then verify that move in current documentation or through testing.
Why a faster attack can be mistaken for a Dexterity effect
Players often observe a real timing difference but attach it to the wrong cause. Several variables can change how quickly an attack appears or completes:
| What changed | What it can explain | Why it does not prove a Dexterity effect |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon or weapon class | Different weapons can have different startup, active and recovery animations. | You changed the moveset, not just the attribute. |
| Skill or special attack | A patch can speed up one named skill or alter its motion. | The change may apply only to that skill. |
| Patch version | Balance updates can alter attack or casting motion. | A patch adjustment is not automatically tied to a character stat. |
| Attack input | Light, heavy, charged, jumping and running attacks can have different timings. | Comparing different inputs compares different animations. |
| Equipment or loadout | Changing gear can alter which attacks, skills or recovery states you are using. | The observed difference may come from the loadout rather than Dexterity. |
| Measurement conditions | Frame rate, camera angle and human reaction time can make a small difference look larger. | An impression is not a controlled stat test. |
This is why “I raised Dexterity and the sword felt faster” is useful as an observation but not conclusive evidence. To isolate the attribute, every other variable has to remain constant.
How to check whether Dexterity changes swing speed in a specific game
When a game’s tooltip or official notes do not answer the question, use a repeatable comparison rather than relying on feel. The following procedure works for most games that let you respec, create test characters, or compare the same weapon at different stat values.

- Versatile compatibility: supports Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One X/S consoles and PC Win10 and above (including the game platform Steam).
- Precise control: features Hall joysticks and Hall triggers for a comfortable feeling, long service life and improved game accuracy.
- Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.
- Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
- Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
- Name the exact game and version. Record the platform, patch number if shown, and whether you are in single-player, online or a special mode. A mechanic can differ after an update.
- Choose one weapon and one attack. Use the same weapon, upgrade level, ammunition or catalyst, and attack input in both tests. Do not compare a light attack with a charged or skill attack.
- Keep the loadout fixed. Leave armor, accessories, buffs, status effects, active skills and companion effects unchanged. Remove temporary effects that could alter animation or stamina behavior.
- Create two Dexterity values. Compare a baseline character with a higher-Dexterity version while keeping every other relevant attribute the same. If the game does not support respecs, use two characters with matching equipment and record the difference in total level.
- Measure a complete sequence. Time several repetitions from the same input event to the same visible endpoint, such as the next attack becoming available. Record multiple trials instead of accepting the fastest or slowest attempt.
- Separate reaction time from animation time. If you press the next button manually, your reaction delay is part of the result. Use a consistent recording method, and compare the animation frame-by-frame when possible.
- Repeat with another attack. Test a second input on the same weapon. If only one move changes, the result points to a move-specific rule rather than a universal swing-speed stat.
- Check the patch notes. Look for language about attack motion, recovery, startup, casting motion or a named weapon and skill. A note that lists a specific animation is stronger evidence than a community assumption.
If the measured difference is smaller than your timing error, report it as uncertain. A controlled test can show that two setups look different; it cannot by itself explain the cause unless the stat was the only variable changed.
How to read an Elden Ring build decision without overclaiming
For Elden Ring, the useful question is not “Is Dexterity a speed stat?” in the abstract. Ask what the chosen weapon and build gain from Dexterity according to the game’s current data.
Start with the weapon, not the attribute
Write down the weapon’s requirements, scaling grades or other displayed stat relationships, and the attack you intend to use. A weapon that rewards Dexterity for damage is a different decision from a weapon whose attack motion was changed in a patch. The former concerns output from the stat; the latter concerns the animation of a particular move.
Separate ordinary attacks from skills
The official April 19, 2022 notes mention both selected weapon types and selected skills. If your observation comes from a special attack, do not generalize it to the weapon’s ordinary light and heavy attacks without separate evidence. Conversely, an ordinary attack that feels slow does not tell you how the weapon’s skill behaves.

Do not treat casting notes as melee notes
The same update entry also discusses casting-motion adjustments for selected spells. Casting speed and weapon-swing speed are different mechanics. Evidence about one should not be used as proof about the other.
Verify the current patch
The dated note is a record of what changed at that time, not a promise that every later version behaves identically. Before committing levels for a timing-sensitive build, consult the current official update history and test the exact move in the version you play.

Outside Elden Ring, there is no universal definition. A game may use Dexterity for accuracy, critical-hit chance, ranged damage, initiative, evasion, movement, casting or weapon requirements. Another may use it for attack speed, but only for a particular weapon category or only after a threshold. Some games expose a direct “attack speed” statistic while others hide timing inside weapon data.
Because those designs are unrelated, a general gaming article cannot responsibly promise that Dexterity accelerates swings in an unnamed title. The safest workflow is:
Best Value
- Multi-Platform PC Gaming Controller: Working with Switch, PC, Android, and iOS devices via Bluetooth, wired, and wireless dongle connections.
- Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
- 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).
- 1000Hz Polling Rate: This ensures that your inputs are registered almost instantaneously, minimizing lag and maximizing your performance during competitive play.
- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
- Find the game’s attribute description and weapon-stat glossary.
- Check whether the interface lists attack speed, animation duration, recovery or frames.
- Read patch notes for the exact weapon, skill or spell.
- Test one variable at a time if the documentation is silent.
A secondary article published by SplicedOnline on November 5, 2024 uses the same question wording and discusses multiple games. It demonstrates that players commonly ask the question, but broad cross-game statements are not a substitute for a game-specific rule or official documentation.
A practical decision rule for spending levels
Use Dexterity for a documented benefit, not an assumed animation bonus. Before investing, answer these questions:
- Does the selected weapon’s current data show Dexterity scaling or a requirement?
- Is the desired improvement damage, access to the weapon, casting, or the timing of one named attack?
- Does an official note explicitly connect the timing change to Dexterity, or does it merely list an animation adjustment?
- Can you reproduce the timing difference while holding weapon, attack input, loadout and patch constant?
- Would the same levels still help your build if the attack speed observation proves to be a weapon- or skill-specific effect?
If the answer to the timing question is unknown, treat swing speed as unconfirmed and make the build decision on established benefits instead. You can revisit the choice after identifying the game and verifying the move.
Bottom line for the question as written
Dexterity does not have a universal meaning, so the title alone cannot support a yes-or-no answer. In Elden Ring, official update notes dated April 19, 2022 document faster attack motion for selected weapon types and skills and adjustments to selected spell-casting motions. They do not establish that raising Dexterity generally makes weapon swings faster. Name the game, identify the exact weapon and attack, check the current patch, and test or document that specific interaction before treating Dexterity as an attack-speed stat.
