The dgsetup.dll error usually means a Digi International application or legacy device driver cannot find one of its own files. dgsetup.dll is the DGSETUP DLL, a third-party application component, not a Windows system file.

Which fix applies to you
Use the first description that matches what happened:
- A Digi device or application was recently removed, upgraded, or reinstalled: repair or reinstall that exact Digi package.
- The error appeared after a driver update or Windows upgrade: identify the Digi hardware and install the matching driver from Digi’s official support or legacy download area.
- Windows Security reported or quarantined the file: verify the installer and review Protection history before restoring anything.
- The message says “specified module could not be found”: the named DLL may exist, but another dependency may be missing.
- The error mentions an old AccelePort, FEP5, or similar adapter: use the legacy package for that hardware instead of assuming the newest RealPort release is correct.
- No Digi hardware or program is installed now: remove the orphaned startup entry or application rather than downloading the DLL.
- Several Windows programs are also failing: repair Windows components with DISM and SFC after addressing the Digi installation.
Do not begin by copying dgsetup.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. The correct location is normally determined by the Digi program that loads it.

What dgsetup.dll belongs to
Public driver contents associate dgsetup.dll with legacy Digi International setup and driver software, including Digi AccelePort C/X and related adapter packages. A Digi driver package can contain this DLL alongside configuration files, .sys drivers, .inf installation files, and firmware components.
That does not establish that every Digi product or every RealPort release contains the same file. Digi has current packages and older archived packages for different hardware generations. If the error names a specific application, install that application’s package rather than replacing it with an unrelated driver.
Before repairing the installation, record:
- The exact Digi device model.
- The application name shown in the error.
- The full path displayed in the error, if available.
- Your Windows edition and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The location of any existing copy of
dgsetup.dll.
The owning executable matters more than the operating system’s bitness. A 64-bit Windows installation can run a 32-bit Digi program, which may require a 32-bit DLL beside that program.

This is the most likely and safest repair.
Identify the correct package
Look at the physical Digi device, its entry in Device Manager, or the name of the application producing the error. Digi products that may be relevant include:
- AccelePort C/X adapters
- FEP5 and related legacy adapter software
- RealPort installations
- Other older Digi setup or configuration utilities
Open Digi’s official Technical Support page on a working browser and search for the exact model. Select the Windows driver or software package under the product’s drivers and downloads area. For obsolete hardware, use Digi’s legacy driver listings.
Do not select a package only because its name contains “Digi” or “RealPort.” The newest package may not support an older adapter, and a package for a different Digi product may contain incompatible files.
Install it correctly
- Download the complete Digi package from Digi.
- If it is a ZIP file, right-click it and select Extract All.
- Extract it to a local folder such as
C:DigiInstall. - Open the extracted folder.
- Right-click
setup.exeand select Run as administrator. - Follow the Digi setup wizard.
- Allow Windows to install the requested driver components.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Start the Digi application again.
Digi’s Windows installation guidance specifically uses the extracted package and setup.exe. Running setup from inside a ZIP can prevent files from being copied or temporary paths from being resolved correctly.

The repair succeeded if:
- The application opens without the
dgsetup.dllmessage. - The Digi device appears normally in Device Manager.
- The associated COM port or adapter is available.
- The application can detect or configure the hardware.
If the same error remains, do not download a replacement DLL. Continue with the path and dependency checks below.

Fix 2: Repair an existing Digi installation
If Digi software is still installed, repair it before removing anything.
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Digi, RealPort, AccelePort, or the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the program.
- Choose Modify, Change, or Repair, if available.
- Complete the repair wizard.
- Restart Windows.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the affected Digi program, restart, and install the correct package from Digi. Save any device configuration first if the application provides an export or backup function.

Do not uninstall the Digi device from Device Manager as the only repair step. Device Manager can remove a device entry, but it does not necessarily restore the application’s setup DLLs, configuration files, or installer registration.
Fix 3: Check the file path and dependencies
A message such as:
“There was a problem starting dgsetup.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
does not always mean dgsetup.dll itself is absent. Windows may be reporting that a library required by dgsetup.dll or by the Digi executable cannot be loaded.
Check the owning application folder
Use the error dialog, shortcut properties, or the Digi installation directory to locate the executable that is failing.

- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, note the Target path.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Look for
dgsetup.dllbeside the application or in a subfolder used by the Digi package.
Do not move a copy from another computer unless that computer has the identical Digi product, package generation, and architecture. A matching filename is not proof that the file is compatible.
Check Windows Event Viewer
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the time the Digi program failed.
- Read the Faulting application path and Faulting module path.
If Event Viewer names another DLL, repair the complete Digi installation rather than replacing only dgsetup.dll.

Check architecture
Public file indexes have associated dgsetup.dll with a 32-bit build and a listed historical version, but third-party architecture claims conflict. There is no reliable universal 32-bit and 64-bit matrix for this file.
Use the architecture of the Digi executable and its package:

- A 32-bit Digi program needs its compatible 32-bit components even on 64-bit Windows.
- A 64-bit Digi program needs the components supplied for that program.
- Do not choose a DLL based only on the
System32orSysWOW64folder name. - Do not mix files from current RealPort, AccelePort, and other legacy packages.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a file after an update, cleanup operation, or scan.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Find the detection related to the Digi installation.
- Expand it and review the file path, detection name, and action.
- Verify that the file came from an authentic Digi installer.
- Scan the original Digi installer before using it again.
Restore a quarantined file only when its source is trusted and the installer has been verified. Microsoft warns that allowing a genuinely malicious file can expose the computer. If the file came from an unknown DLL site or an untrusted archive, remove it and reinstall from Digi instead.
After restoring a verified file, run the Digi installer again so the complete package is repaired. A restored DLL alone may leave other files missing.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and SFC are secondary repairs. They do not normally recreate a third-party Digi DLL, but they can correct damaged Windows components or installer dependencies.
First install pending Windows updates and restart the computer. Then:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Digi installer again if the error remains.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command should be expected to supply dgsetup.dll, because the file belongs to Digi software rather than standard Windows.

Repeating these commands without checking the Digi package will not fix a missing vendor file.

Fix 6: Check Windows Features only if the installer requests them
Do not randomly enable Windows Features to repair dgsetup.dll. Use this step only if the Digi installer or application explicitly reports that a Windows component is missing.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the feature named in the Digi installer’s message.
- Enable only that requested feature.
- Select OK.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
- Run the Digi installer again.
If the installer does not identify a required Windows Feature, return to the correct Digi package and its installation log instead.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent driver change
If dgsetup.dll worked until a driver update, application removal, or Windows change, System Restore may return the system to an earlier configuration.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the drivers and applications that may be removed.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore preserves personal files but can remove subsequently installed drivers and programs. After the restore, reinstall the correct Digi package if necessary.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL repair
The command below is often suggested for DLL errors:
regsvr32 dgsetup.dll
Do not run it merely because the filename ends in .dll. Microsoft documents regsvr32 for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no reliable evidence that dgsetup.dll is an ActiveX or COM server requiring registration.
A “Cannot register dgsetup.dll” message usually indicates that registration is the wrong repair method, the file is incompatible, or the command was run from the wrong directory. Use the Digi installer unless Digi’s instructions for the exact package explicitly require registration.

Remove an orphaned Digi startup entry
If no Digi hardware or software remains, Windows may still be trying to launch an old setup utility.

- Remove the obsolete Digi application if it is listed.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable an entry clearly associated with the removed Digi program.
- Restart Windows.
If the startup entry is unclear, do not delete random registry values. Check the executable path and publisher first. An orphaned entry should be removed, not satisfied with an unknown DLL.
What not to do
Avoid these common repairs:
- Downloading
dgsetup.dllfrom a random DLL website. - Copying an unknown file into
System32orSysWOW64. - Replacing the file with one from another Digi product.
- Mixing files from different driver generations.
- Running
regsvr32without package-specific instructions. - Disabling antivirus protection to force an installer through.
- Assuming the newest RealPort release supports every historical Digi device.
- Treating SFC as a tool that restores third-party application files.
An isolated DLL can contain malware, be the wrong version, use the wrong architecture, or fail because its dependencies are also missing. The complete official Digi installer provides the relevant DLLs, drivers, configuration files, and setup information together.
Troubleshooting checklist when the error persists
Confirm each item before escalating:
- The Digi device model is known.
- The application producing the error is identified.
- The package matches the device and Windows version.
- The downloaded archive was extracted fully.
setup.exewas run from a local folder as administrator.- Windows was restarted after installation.
- Windows Security did not quarantine a required file.
- The application and DLL architecture match.
- Event Viewer does not identify a different missing dependency.
- The Digi installer log does not show a failed driver or permission step.
- The device is visible in Device Manager.
- The Digi device is connected, powered, and configured correctly.
For RealPort installations, inspect the Windows installer information under WindowsINF, including setupapi.dev, when the installation fails. If the device is not detected, the underlying problem may be cabling, network configuration, hardware failure, or unsupported legacy hardware rather than dgsetup.dll.
FAQ
Is dgsetup.dll a Windows file?
No. It is the DGSETUP DLL associated with Digi International software. It should not normally be downloaded into a Windows system folder.
Can I download only dgsetup.dll?
That is unsafe and usually ineffective. Reinstall the complete Digi application or driver package that owns the file.
Is dgsetup.dll part of RealPort?
It may be associated with Digi driver and setup software, but it should not be assumed that every RealPort release contains it. Older AccelePort and other legacy packages are also associated with the filename.
Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?
Public listings are not consistent enough to establish a universal architecture. Match the DLL to the Digi executable and package, not simply to whether Windows is 64-bit.
Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file exists?
A dependency required by the DLL or the Digi executable may be missing, incompatible, or damaged. Reinstall the complete package and inspect Event Viewer rather than copying another DLL.
Should I register the file with regsvr32?
Usually no. regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points. Use it only if the documentation for the exact Digi package explicitly instructs you to do so.
What information should I provide to a technician?
Provide the complete error text, Digi model, application name, Windows version, executable path, DLL location, and any Event Viewer or installer-log details. This is enough to distinguish a missing package from a dependency, architecture, quarantine, or hardware problem.
