New to Diablo 3 or returning after a long break? Use the Campaign for context and a guided introduction, or create a Seasonal hero for a fresh progression track. You do not have to finish the Campaign to enter Adventure Mode: Blizzard made that mode available by default for all accounts in Patch 2.7.4. Choose a class by combat feel rather than an imaginary tier list, set difficulty to maintain a brisk pace, and use the Season Journey when you want structured goals and class-set rewards.
What this walkthrough covers
This is an orientation walkthrough for starting Diablo 3, selecting a class, moving through the story, choosing difficulty, and deciding what to do after the Campaign. It does not pretend to be an act-by-act map or a boss-tactics manual. The available official material supports a reliable route through the game’s modes and progression systems, but not verified secret locations, optimal skill rotations, or platform-specific button inputs.

The game’s central loop is straightforward: fight through quests and other activities, gain experience, learn and modify skills, and replace equipment as stronger items appear. The story begins with a fallen star near Tristram and follows the return of demonic threats. If you want narrative context and a clear sequence of objectives, Campaign is the most natural first route.

Campaign: the guided introduction
Select Campaign when you want the game to teach its setting and progression in order. Follow the quest prompts through the acts, keep your equipment reasonably current, and try new skills as they unlock. You do not need to understand endgame optimization before starting. The Campaign gives a new player a defined objective at each stage, while still letting you experiment with abilities, followers, crafting, and skill runes.

Adventure Mode: open-ended play from the start
Adventure Mode is not a post-Campaign gate under the current rules. Blizzard’s Patch 2.7.4 notes state that it is unlocked by default for all accounts, so a new or returning player can enter it without first completing the story. This makes Adventure Mode a valid choice if you care more about repeatable progression than plot, or if you are joining friends who are already playing there.
Campaign and Adventure Mode are different ways to organize play, not separate versions of your character. Campaign emphasizes quest order and narrative; Adventure Mode emphasizes flexible activities and progression. If you are unsure, begin with Campaign for your first hero, then switch to Adventure Mode when you want less scripted objectives. A returning player who already knows the story can start in Adventure Mode immediately.
Seasonal hero: a deliberate fresh start
Creating a Seasonal character resets the personal progression for that Season. Blizzard describes the first Seasonal character as starting from scratch, with a separate Seasonal roster. At the end of the Season, Seasonal characters become Non-Seasonal characters, allowing you to keep playing them after the event closes. This is useful when you enjoy a clean race toward new goals, but less convenient if you want instant access to an established non-seasonal inventory and roster.

Step-by-step: your first session
- Decide whether the goal is story or a fresh seasonal race. Choose Campaign for guided narrative progression. Choose a Seasonal hero if you want a reset, a Season Journey, and the chance to earn that Season’s rewards.
- Create the hero and select a class. Use the class descriptions below as a playstyle filter. No official source in this guide establishes a universally strongest or easiest class, so choose the type of combat you will enjoy repeating.
- Enter Campaign or Adventure Mode. Campaign follows quest prompts through the acts. Adventure Mode is available without Campaign completion under Patch 2.7.4.
- Start at a manageable difficulty. Normal through Torment 6 are initially available. Pick the setting that keeps ordinary fights moving; the unlock list is not a promise that every setting is efficient for every build.
- Learn the character through play. Use combat to gain experience, test skills and runes as they become available, and equip improvements rather than saving every item for a hypothetical perfect build.
- Reassess after several encounters. If routine enemies take so long that progress feels stalled, lower the difficulty. If everything disappears instantly and you are not taking meaningful damage, raise it. This pacing rule is practical guidance, not a Blizzard-mandated target.
- Choose your next track. Continue the Campaign for story, move to Adventure Mode for flexible activity, or follow the Seasonal Journey for chapter-based objectives.
Classes: pick by combat feel
Blizzard identifies seven classes in Diablo 3, each with its own resource system and playstyle. The descriptions below translate those official identities into a selection aid; they are not a ranking of damage, survivability, or beginner friendliness.
| Class | Official combat identity | Choose it if you prefer |
|---|---|---|
| Barbarian | Heavily armed close-combat warrior | Staying in melee range and solving fights with direct weapon attacks |
| Crusader | Armored champion of justice | A heavily protected holy-warrior fantasy and deliberate frontline combat |
| Demon Hunter | Ranged hunter using weapons and traps | Keeping distance, aiming attacks, and setting up enemies with traps |
| Monk | Holy warrior trained in martial combat | Fast, ability-driven martial fighting with a spiritual theme |
| Necromancer | Blood-and-bone magic, curses, and summoned undead | Commanding undead, applying curses, and shaping fights with dark magic |
| Witch Doctor | Spirit magic and summoned creatures | Using supernatural effects and allies to pressure enemies |
| Wizard | Arcane and elemental magic | Ranged spellcasting and changing the battlefield with magic |
Use three questions to narrow the choice. First, do you want melee or ranged combat? Second, do you want to deliver most damage directly or let summoned allies contribute? Third, do you prefer a straightforward attack pattern or a class whose abilities demand more active management? Your answers identify a comfortable starting point without claiming that one class is objectively best.
Difficulty: treat access as a pacing control
Patch 2.7.4 establishes two important access rules. Normal through Torment 6 are available initially. Reaching level 70 unlocks Torment 7 through Torment 16. The notes establish when those settings become available, not which one your class, platform, or current equipment should use.

| Progress point | Difficulty access | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|
| Before level 70 | Normal through Torment 6 | Choose the lowest setting that still feels active and rewarding; lower it when routine fights become a bottleneck. |
| At level 70 | Torment 7 through Torment 16 unlock | Test the newly available settings gradually instead of jumping to the highest number. |
Difficulty should regulate time and tension. A setting that makes every pack a prolonged defensive exercise can slow experience and make the Campaign feel worse, even if the nominal reward is higher. Conversely, a setting where every enemy dies before your abilities matter may be safe but uninteresting. Change it when the pace changes; you do not need to treat an earlier choice as permanent.

What resets
A Seasonal hero begins with a fresh progression track rather than your established Non-Seasonal progress. That reset is the point: everyone participating in the Season starts from a comparable baseline. Seasonal and Non-Seasonal characters are separate while the Season is active, so decide whether you want a clean start before creating the hero.
What the Season Journey provides
The Season Journey supplies chapter-based objectives. Chapters 2, 3, and 4 award Haedrig’s Gifts containing pieces of a class set. The exact set offered changes by Season, so an older list of set names should not be treated as current. Check the live Season announcement or in-game Journey before planning a build around a particular reward.

What happens when the Season ends
Seasonal characters become Non-Seasonal when the Season ends. That transition lets you continue the hero, but it also means the special fresh-start environment is temporary. If you return later, check which characters and items are now on the Non-Seasonal roster before starting another hero.

Stay with the same character
Move into Adventure Mode when you want open-ended progression rather than the next story quest. Because Adventure Mode is available without Campaign completion, you can make this switch whenever the narrative stops being your priority. Continue adjusting difficulty to keep encounters moving and use the mode’s broader activity structure to develop the character.

If you want a reason to rebuild, create a Seasonal hero and work through the current Season Journey. The early Journey chapters can supply class-set pieces through Haedrig’s Gifts, but reward details are season-specific. Treat the Season as a new project rather than an extension of your fully equipped Non-Seasonal character.

- For PlayStation owners, Diablo III: Reaper of Souls - Ultimate Evil Edition offers 'The Last of Us' Nephalem Rift, a randomized dungeon swarming with Stalkers, Clickers and Bloaters in hand-picked environments with a unique 'The Last of Us' yellow spore effect. Also included is the 'Guise of the Colossi' Unique Armor; a unique transmogrification plan that unlocks six armors that are inspired by 'Shadow of the Colossus' and work for all classes.

- Play solo or form a party of up to four other heroes.
Keep the Campaign as a reference route
You can replay the story when you want a guided objective sequence or want to experience a different class in the setting. A second Campaign run is also a low-pressure way to learn how a new class’s resource system and abilities feel before committing to more open-ended progression.
Current Season information
Blizzard’s Season 40 preview calls the Season Light’s Calling and lists a start time of October 2, 2026, at 5 p.m. PDT/CET/KST. The preview says the theme first appeared in Season 27. It also lists Season 39 ending September 27 at 5 p.m. PDT. The preview used for this guide does not establish a Season 40 end date, so do not infer one from a typical Season length. Dates and rewards can change; verify the live announcement when your start date matters.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Assuming Campaign completion is required for Adventure Mode. It is not under the current default-unlock rule. Start Adventure Mode when it better fits your goal.
- Choosing a class from an unsupported tier list. The official descriptions establish different identities and resource systems, not an objective beginner ranking. Pick range, direct-versus-summoned damage, and complexity first.
- Confusing difficulty access with a recommended setting. Torment 7–16 unlocking at level 70 tells you when the options appear, not which one your equipment can handle efficiently.
- Planning around an outdated Haedrig’s Gift list. Chapters 2, 3, and 4 provide the gift structure, but the class set changes by Season.
- Expecting Seasonal progress to be permanent in the same roster. Seasonal characters remain separate during the event and move to Non-Seasonal status when it ends.
- Looking for a verified boss-by-boss route in a general walkthrough. This guide does not establish secret maps, exact boss tactics, or universal skill rotations. Use the quest prompts for the Campaign and current, class-specific information for optimization.
A simple decision framework
| Your priority | Start here | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Understand the setting and follow clear objectives | Campaign with any class that matches your preferred range | The quest sequence provides context and a guided progression path. |
| Skip the story and pursue flexible progression | Adventure Mode | It is available by default without Campaign completion. |
| Compete with a fresh roster and earn Journey rewards | Seasonal hero | Seasonal characters start from scratch and can earn Haedrig’s Gifts through Journey chapters. |
| Continue an established character | Non-Seasonal Adventure Mode | Your existing character remains available without a seasonal reset. |
The practical answer to “what should I do first?” is therefore conditional: Campaign is the best orientation route for a first story-focused player; Adventure Mode is immediately available for players who want flexible activity; and Seasonal play is the right choice when the appeal is a temporary fresh start and Journey rewards. Whichever route you choose, select the class whose combat loop you will enjoy, then use difficulty to preserve momentum rather than chasing the largest available number.
