Diablo 4’s practical crowd-control list has 12 named effects: Chill, Daze, Slow, Fear, Taunt, Knockback, Knockdown, Pull In, Tether, Immobilize, Stun, and Freeze. They interfere with enemy movement, actions, position, or behavior. Against bosses, control effects can instead contribute to a Stagger threshold, temporarily reducing the boss’s capabilities.
All 12 crowd control effects in Diablo 4
The list below is the practical set of named effects described by the Diablo Wiki crowd-control reference and the Icy Veins guide, updated March 4, 2026. It is not an official Blizzard glossary, and individual effects may work differently depending on the enemy, mode, skill, or current patch.

How the effects differ
These groupings describe what the effects do for players; they are not an official Blizzard taxonomy.
Movement reduction or prevention
Slow and Chill reduce movement rather than necessarily stopping it. Immobilize prevents movement, while Tether confines a target to an area or anchor. Freeze is a more severe cold-control outcome than Chill.

Action disruption
Daze interferes with attacking or using skills. Stun stops movement or attacks, and Knockdown temporarily puts a target down while restricting its actions. Their exact behavior and duration depend on how a particular skill applies the effect.
Forced movement or behavior
Knockback pushes enemies away, while Pull In draws them toward a source. Fear makes a target flee; Taunt redirects its behavior. These effects change positioning or behavior rather than simply reducing movement speed.
What crowd control does to bosses
Bosses are not necessarily immune to every contribution from crowd control. Blizzard explains that control effects can fill a threshold; once it is met, a boss becomes Staggered and loses some capabilities or powers down. In Blizzard’s Diablo IV Feature Overview, Ashava is the example: Staggering her shatters her arm blades and greatly reduces the range of her whirlwind.

In practical terms, a skill that controls ordinary enemies may contribute to a boss’s Stagger bar instead of applying the same direct effect. Stagger is therefore a threshold mechanic, not simply another name for Stun or Freeze.

Why skill and item examples need a patch label
The names of the effects are useful for understanding what a build does, but applications and balance details change. Blizzard’s official version 2.6 patch notes, for example, describe Godslayer Crown marking and pulling nearby enemies when attempting to Stun, Freeze, or Immobilize an enemy. Those notes also include changes involving Fear and Slow. The behavior is an item-specific, version-specific example—not a rule that every such effect pulls enemies.
Blizzard’s version 2.2 patch notes show the same need for context: Azurewrath changed from a chance to Freeze enemies to applying Vulnerable and Chill, and an Aspect affecting Daze duration was changed. These examples illustrate patch sensitivity; they do not establish current universal values for the effects.

How to compare crowd-control skills
When comparing two skills or builds, assess what each one actually does rather than relying on the effect name alone:
- Action impaired: Does it affect movement, attacks, skills, or more than one of these?
- Movement outcome: Does it slow, stop, confine, or forcibly reposition the target?
- Application details: What are the skill’s conditions and duration in the relevant patch?
- Boss interaction: Does the effect apply directly to the target, or contribute toward Stagger?
Check the current in-game wording and patch notes for a specific skill or item. A general effect description cannot establish its duration, application conditions, or performance against every enemy type.
