The item holds gameplay data—stats, affixes, power, upgrade state and its inventory, equipped or stash location. Salvaging an eligible item at a Blacksmith consumes that item but unlocks its visual design in the Wardrobe. The appearance collection is account-wide across Seasonal and Eternal realms, while the Armory is a separate, character-bound system for build loadouts.
Armor items and transmog appearances are different records
Think of Diablo 4 gear as having two layers. The armor item is the object you equip and manage for combat. Its stats, affixes, item power, upgrade state and any other gameplay value remain attached to that specific item. The item can sit in your character’s inventory, an equipped slot or your stash.

A transmog appearance is only the visual design. It changes how an equipped slot is presented without replacing the underlying armor’s stats. Once a design is unlocked, you can apply it through the Wardrobe to compatible equipment while continuing to use whatever item provides your build’s actual attributes.

| Record | What it contains | Where it is saved | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Armor item | Stats, affixes, item power, upgrade state and the physical item itself | Inventory, equipped slot or stash | Subject to the game’s gear, character and realm persistence rules |
| Salvaged appearance | The unlocked visual design of an eligible item | Wardrobe appearance collection | Account-wide; available on Seasonal and Eternal realms |
| Active transmog choice | The appearance currently assigned to an equipment slot | Character appearance state managed through Wardrobe and inventory controls | Affects the character’s presentation, not the item’s gameplay values |
| Armory loadout | Equipped items, skills, Paragon board and glyphs, plus class mechanic selections | Armory slot | Character-bound; five loadout slots per character |
This separation explains the usual salvage question: the item can disappear while the look remains. You are not turning the armor into a cosmetic object in your inventory; you are destroying the gameplay item and adding its design to a separate collection.

What happens when you salvage armor
Check the item before committing
Inspect the item’s tooltip or the Blacksmith’s salvage interface. An eligible item can display an indication that salvaging it unlocks a new look. The salvage icon is the practical warning that the item may add an appearance to your collection. Do not assume every piece of armor grants one: some items do not unlock a design, and the support discussion specifically notes that certain uniques may not provide an appearance.
Before clicking salvage, decide whether the item still has a gameplay purpose. A design can be collected only after the item is consumed, so keeping a rare item for its stats and keeping its appearance are different decisions.
The salvage sequence
- Open your inventory and inspect the armor. Look for the new-look or salvage indicator in the tooltip or salvage screen.
- Go to a Blacksmith. Place the eligible item in the salvage interface and confirm the action.
- Confirm the item is gone. Salvaging consumes the original armor; its stats, affixes, power, upgrade state and physical inventory entry are not retained as an item.
- Travel to a major city or hub and open the Wardrobe. The newly unlocked design is added to the appearance collection rather than returned to your inventory.
- Select the appearance for the relevant armor slot. The visual layer is applied through the Wardrobe while the equipped item continues to supply its combat data.
Blizzard describes the feature this way: “Salvage loot in your inventory to unlock transmog options, allowing armor to have the visual design and color palate you prefer.” In practical terms, that means the source armor is a one-time unlock source, not a permanent prerequisite for wearing the look.

- You lose: the original item and everything specific to that item, including its stats, affixes, power, upgrade state and any other reason you might have kept it for gameplay.
- You keep: the unlocked visual design in the Wardrobe, provided the item was eligible and the salvage completed successfully.
- You do not transfer: the item’s combat properties into the appearance. A transmog never carries the salvaged armor’s affixes or upgrades.
Where the appearance is stored and used
The Wardrobe is the appearance library
The Wardrobe is the system that stores and applies cosmetic designs. Its current categories include Armor, Items, Effects and Pets. For armor transmogs, choose the relevant body slot and select an unlocked design. The Wardrobe selection changes the character’s visible equipment while leaving the equipped item’s gameplay function intact.

The appearance collection is not a stash tab. You will not find a salvaged skin as a new item to pick up, move or trade. It is recorded as an unlock in the Wardrobe interface. Likewise, the active visual choice is managed as character appearance state rather than as a second copy of the armor in your bags.
Replacing the underlying item
When you equip a different armor item, the cosmetic design does not become a physical object that must be salvaged again. Apply an unlocked look through the Wardrobe to the slot you want to display. The new item’s stats and the selected visual design are separate layers.
If you later change the appearance, that changes only the presentation. If you change the gear, that changes the combat item. Treat those as two independent operations so you do not keep weak equipment merely because you like its model.
Is Diablo 4 transmog account-wide?
According to Diablo 4’s official site, “cosmetics, transmogs, and achievements are account-wide, and will appear on both Realms.” In the game’s seasonal structure, this is the important boundary: a Seasonal character begins with fresh character progression, but the account’s unlocked appearance collection is not limited to that one character or to one realm.

| Question | Appearance collection | Armor item |
|---|---|---|
| Is it tied to one character? | No. The transmog unlock is account-wide. | The item belongs to the character, inventory, equipped slot or stash where it exists. |
| Does it cross Seasonal and Eternal realms? | Yes. Blizzard says cosmetics and transmogs appear on both Realms. | Do not treat an individual item as an account-wide cosmetic record; its persistence follows the gear and realm rules for that item. |
| Does it preserve combat data? | No. It stores the look only. | Yes. Stats, affixes, power and upgrade state are properties of the item. |
| Where do you manage it? | Wardrobe | Inventory, equipped slots, stash and Blacksmith functions |
Account-wide does not mean that every character automatically wears the same design. Each character still has its own equipped gear and its own active presentation choices. It means the unlock is available to the account when you open the Wardrobe on another eligible character or realm.
Wardrobe and Armory are not the same system
The two interfaces can both affect what you see on a character, but they save different kinds of information. The Wardrobe is the cosmetic collection and appearance selector. The Armory is a build snapshot.
| Comparison | Wardrobe | Armory |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Collect and apply visual designs | Save and switch complete character builds |
| Stores | Armor appearances and other cosmetic categories such as Items, Effects and Pets | Equipped items, skills, Paragon board and glyphs, and class mechanic selections |
| Scope | Account-wide appearance collection across Seasonal and Eternal realms | Character-bound |
| Number of slots | Not described as a loadout-slot system | Five loadout slots per character |
| Does it unlock a salvaged look? | Yes, when the item is eligible and salvaged | No. It records a build, not the master appearance library |
| Does it determine item stats? | No | It can save which items are equipped, but it does not convert them into cosmetics |
Use the Wardrobe when your question is “How should this slot look?” Use the Armory when your question is “Which gear, skills and Paragon setup should this character equip?” An Armory loadout may include the item currently wearing a transmog, but it is not where the account-wide appearance unlock is stored.
What to keep before salvaging an item
The safest rule is to treat salvage as irreversible for the item itself. The appearance may be permanent in the Wardrobe, but the armor’s gameplay value is not recoverable through that appearance.

- Keep it if you still need its stats. A visually appealing item can still be useful for your current or planned build.
- Keep it if its affixes matter. The transmog does not preserve or reproduce affixes.
- Keep it if you invested in upgrades. Upgrade state belongs to the armor item, not the cosmetic unlock.
- Keep it if you need its aspect or another gameplay purpose. Salvaging removes the specific item you might otherwise use.
- Salvage it when the item is expendable and the tooltip confirms a new look. This is the point at which collecting the appearance is worth consuming the source.
Do not use the Wardrobe as a reason to hoard every duplicate. Once a look is unlocked, the collection is the lasting record; duplicates do not become stronger versions of that appearance. Conversely, do not salvage a one-of-a-kind upgrade just because its model is already unlocked elsewhere.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a salvaged armor look may not appear
The item did not grant an appearance
Not every item unlocks a transmog. Check for the salvage or new-look indicator before the action. If the interface did not mark the item as providing a design, there may be no new Wardrobe entry to find. Some uniques are among the items that may not grant an appearance.
You are checking the wrong interface
A salvaged look is not placed in the stash and is not attached to an Armory slot. Open the Wardrobe in a major city or hub, then inspect the armor category and the slot that matches the item. The Wardrobe is the authoritative place to select the design.

You expected the original armor to remain
Successful salvage consumes the source item. If you can no longer equip it or find it in the stash, that is the expected result of the salvage action. The surviving record is the appearance unlock, not a replacement copy of the armor.
Best Value
You are testing on another realm or character
Blizzard states that cosmetics and transmogs are account-wide and appear on both Seasonal and Eternal realms. If an unlock is missing on another character, first verify that you are using the same game account and that the salvage actually completed. The seasonal reset of character progression does not by itself erase the account’s cosmetic collection.
You are looking for combat benefits
A transmog is visual only. It does not add the salvaged item’s stats, affixes, power, upgrades or aspect to your equipped armor. To gain those benefits, you must retain and equip an item that actually has them.
A practical decision model for gear and cosmetics
When the appearance is the priority
If the armor is no longer useful to your build, has no stats or upgrades you need, and the tooltip marks a new look, salvage it at the Blacksmith. Then apply the design from the Wardrobe to the armor you actually intend to wear. This separates the collection decision from the build decision.
When the item is the priority
If the armor has valuable affixes, power, upgrades, an aspect or a role in a planned build, keep it even if you dislike its model. You can choose another unlocked appearance for the slot without sacrificing the item’s combat data.
When you are uncertain
Pause at the salvage screen and inspect the indicator again. An appearance unlock is not a reason to destroy an item whose gameplay value has not been replaced. Once the item is salvaged, the Wardrobe can preserve its look, but it cannot restore that exact armor as a combat object.
The simplest way to remember the system
Use this three-part rule: Blacksmith unlocks, Wardrobe applies, Armory loads builds. The Blacksmith action determines whether an eligible item adds a visual design and consumes the source. The Wardrobe stores the account-wide appearance and assigns it to an armor slot. The Armory saves a character-bound setup of equipment and abilities, with five loadout slots per character. Keeping those roles separate prevents the two most common mistakes: searching the stash or Armory for a cosmetic unlock, and salvaging a valuable item while assuming its stats will survive with the appearance.
