If Diablo IV is using more memory than expected, lower Texture Quality first and Shadow Quality next—Blizzard identifies both as major memory-use settings. Then check that your PC meets the memory guidance for your chosen quality level, restart the game, and close other applications. High memory use is a symptom, not proof of a universal memory leak.
Which Diablo IV settings reduce memory use?
Blizzard’s graphics guidance points to texture and shadow quality as the most useful in-game adjustments. Change one setting at a time and check memory use and image quality after each change.
Lower Texture Quality
Texture Quality has one of the biggest effects on memory use. Lowering it reduces memory demand but makes textures look softer. This is the first setting to try if you are using Ultra textures, especially with High-Resolution Assets installed and selected.
Blizzard says High texture quality is suitable for 1080p and 1440p displays. Ultra texture quality with High-Resolution Assets requires at least 32 GB of system memory. A higher texture setting is not automatically the best choice if it leaves too little memory for the rest of your system.

Lower Shadow Quality
Shadow Quality also has a significant memory impact. Reducing it can lower memory use and performance cost, but sun and local-light shadows will look less sharp. Blizzard’s graphics guidance recommends decreasing both texture quality and shadow quality when memory is a concern.
Adjust Geometry Complexity or Resolution Percentage if needed
Geometry Complexity can affect memory use, although Blizzard says most other graphics settings have little or no impact. Resolution Percentage is a separate image-quality and performance tradeoff: lowering it reduces the game’s internal rendering resolution and may improve frame rate, but makes the image blurrier. Raising it increases memory requirements, so it is not a memory-saving adjustment.

Does your PC meet Blizzard’s memory guidance?
Blizzard’s published Windows requirements list 8 GB RAM minimum, 16 GB for Medium and High, and 32 GB for Ultra 4K. Its graphics guidance separately specifies at least 32 GB of system memory for Ultra texture quality with High-Resolution Assets. These figures describe Blizzard’s requirements and recommendations; meeting them does not guarantee that a game, driver, or system issue cannot occur.
System RAM and dedicated GPU memory (VRAM) are different resources. Check which one is running short before changing hardware or settings. If your PC is below the guidance for your selected settings, consider reducing those settings first. If you are considering a RAM upgrade, confirm that your PC supports the memory type and capacity; more system RAM is not an established fix for every VRAM problem or suspected memory leak.

What troubleshooting steps should you try?
Blizzard’s general “Not Enough Memory” guidance recommends starting with simple steps. These are general support measures, not a diagnosis specific to Diablo IV.
- Restart the game and PC. This can clear temporary resource pressure.
- Check the game’s requirements. Compare your PC with Blizzard’s current Windows requirements and the guidance for your selected graphics settings.
- Close other applications. Shut down programs you do not need while playing to free system resources.
- Reset the user interface. Blizzard includes a UI reset among its general troubleshooting suggestions.
- Free storage if your drive is nearly full. This is a general troubleshooting step, not a way to add RAM or VRAM.
- Reinstall only if earlier steps fail. Blizzard lists reinstalling after other troubleshooting measures.
How can you tell whether memory use is actually the problem?
Before calling the symptom a “memory leak,” note what resource is filling and how it changes during play. A forum post reporting that GPU VRAM fills up does not establish that system RAM is also exhausted, or that the same issue affects every PC.

- Record whether the reading is system RAM or dedicated GPU memory (VRAM).
- Note your Texture Quality, Shadow Quality, Resolution Percentage, and whether High-Resolution Assets are enabled.
- Watch whether memory use stabilizes or continues rising over a session, and note when the behavior began.
- Record relevant recent changes, such as a game update or graphics-setting change.
Players have posted reports of high memory use after patches, including reports in 2026, while a 2024 discussion contains differing experiences and workarounds. These are individual accounts, not representative tests or confirmation of a general bug. One participant reported that changing the page file helped their setup, but the same discussion does not establish a fixed size or a reliable solution for other PCs.
