What is Lord of Hatred about?
The expansion is Diablo IV’s climactic campaign chapter, centered on a final stand against the Prime Evil Mephisto. The story moves to Skovos, a previously unseen region whose capital, Temis, also serves as an endgame hub. Blizzard describes Skovos as the ancient home of the Askari and the original home of Lilith and Inarius.
Lord of Hatred also includes the preceding expansion, Vessel of Hatred. That story follows Neyrelle through Nahantu as she searches for the Vault of Light to cleanse Mephisto’s soulstone, setting up the conflict in Skovos. Blizzard outlines the campaign and included story in its official announcement.

Campaign, classes and endgame
- New campaign: A fight against Mephisto set in Skovos.
- Two new classes: Paladin and Warlock. Blizzard’s announcement said Paladin was available immediately with pre-purchase; its launch guide identifies Warlock as the other new class.
- War Plans: A system for chaining endgame activities and customizing progression.
- Echoing Hatred: A challenge built around facing unending hordes.
Additional systems and activities
Blizzard also lists the Horadric Cube, Talisman set bonuses, Fishing, skill variants and endgame skill trees among the expansion’s features. The official announcement and launch guide describe the feature set.
Which updates require the expansion?
Not every change arriving alongside Lord of Hatred is exclusive to expansion owners. Blizzard distinguishes expansion features from updates available to all players. The Loot Filter and major skill-system updates are among the shared updates; the launch guide also lists a map overlay, pathfinding and a level-cap increase as permanent updates separately from ownership-gated expansion content.
